  • A sponsored review of the Kaiweets KTI-W01 thermal imaging camera. It's definitely better than the competing Topdon model I reviewed earlier. As always, I review products only on the condition that I'm allowed to be completely honest.
If you're interested in buying one, it's possible to do so from both Amazon and Kaiweets.
    Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B0CB7Q6J79
Use code KTJQGDQL to take 10% off. It's valid until April 30th, 2024.
As of this writing on February 21st, 2024, there is also a "flash sale" going on that offers 20% off. This and the discount code can be used together for 30% off.
    Kaiweets: kaiweets.com/products/kti-w01
Use the discount code UXWB15 for 15% off. I am told this works across the entire Kaiweets site and will not expire.
Details about the camera itself: The internal storage is 32 gigabytes in size, of which 28 are available for use. The PC software (for Windows only) is stored on the camera. I ran it briefly and it's much better than the competing offering from Topdon. Temperatures from -4°F to 1022°F (-20°C to 550°C) can be measured across two ranges that must be manually selected from the menu. Video can be blended in several steps between the 0.3 megapixel (VGA resolution) visible light camera to the 256x192 infrared thermal camera.
Internally, it's based on a system-on-chip from Allwinner. The 1.4.3 firmware version is current as of the time this video went live in February 2024. Kaiweets' representative indicated that future firmware updates would be available at their website, linked above.
The USB-C port does not operate in DisplayPort Alternate Mode, so an external display cannot be connected.
Kaiweets' representative indicated that they have had lots of requests for a storage media slot, and that they would consider my request for an HDMI or analog video output. A threaded tripod mount is to be included in the upcoming KTI-W02 camera. They also said that my request for a custom color palette would likely be implemented at some point. I will update this description accordingly if that happens. I have asked to review the KTI-W02 camera when it becomes available.
I plan to make a quick review video of the included software. I also have plans to do a long term update video at some point in the future, to see how well this camera has held up.

I find that "in stereo where available" graphic far funnier than I should... especially since I'm not even old enough to remember the one it references! (The original appears quite a few times on the pile of VHS tapes I've been going through.)

Quality over quantity. There are so many YT channels that search for the oddest and strangest things they can ever imagine to do a video about them. You may not upload videos such often, but at the same time they contain useful tech items and pleasant commentary.

Funny you mention that about the tripod because mine just disappeared as well. The tripod fairy must be busy this time of year.

Between this and TopTes, the latest trend in Chinese test equipment naming seems to be mashing together two words and then leaving out one letter.

Hey UXWBill. Thank you for sharing this video with us. I always enjoy hearing from you. Where's the best place I can find me a thermal camera like this?😀

My family just replaced the same dryer you have, the glides failed and we continued to run it until the sheet metal on the front of the drum got torn up. It continued to work all the way up until we took it apart.

I wonder how brightly a Pentium 4 space heater would glow on this thing

    Hiya Bill.
Nice to see yr about again.
    Great product.
Coupl a thongs I would say since I like the idea of these camera, I can see all sorts of uses for them.
I think the European Union is gonna eventually mandate all electronics to be serviceable, atleast have replaceable batteries by 2025 & evrn thoygh we aren't members anymore here in Britain, that prob will apply here aswell. So its nice to see the folks at Kaiweets including one as standard gear even though its not required 👍.
Also I wonder how long it'll be before phones etc might have one of these ,maybe one of these manufacturers might consider partnering with makers of handsets as that would be a very handy feature to have esp for a bloke like me since the screen is very small on this a biggercdisplay with this technology would be an excellent idea or atleast the ability to pair your phone or a monitor as say an external display for one a these cameras through the USB connection
Obv this is far more practical as a separate camera for gettin into tight nooks n crannies where a big phone wouldn't fit, but just an idea for down the road that might be able to be included with future updates I think that would really broaden the number of folk who could make use of a nice camera like this. Say ye were pointin it somewhere where ye coujdn't see the display easily havin the option of an external one could be invaluable sometimes.
    Brilliant review as always.

I have a low amount of faith in just about anything the European Union comes up with, no matter how well intentioned it might be. Case in point? All the millions of cookie warnings everywhere, many of which until fairly recently didn't actually let you opt out of cookies being placed on your device.
While I am not aware of any with a detachable camera head, nor sure how practical that would be, there are several thermal imaging cameras that connect to popular cellular phones.

Well yeah yer prob right. Some way or another they do manage to muck things up no matter how well intentioned as ye say, good example aswell 😎. I still think its a step in the right direction but only time will tell If they manage to pull it off with any kinda success.
Anyway we're gettin too political & thar wasn't something I was lookin to get into as I'm sure you weren't aswell 😃.
Yeah there prob are other cameras that do that. Just something that came to mind.

I always have to remind myself that thermal and visible resolution are to entirely different standards. Like 256x192 sounds kind of low, but then I remember that the $1,000 FLIR we have at work produces fine enough images for fire watch duty at 80x60.
I had been tentatively considering the other one, but this one actually seems a little more cromulent (well, quite a bit.. it doesn't have that egregious "LP recorded DVD camcorder footage" level of horizontal stretch going on so that's a pretty big plus). Plus, for 30% off, I almost can't afford not to 😂

Got this one in the mail today. I'll have to do some junk welds at work so I can put it up against work's FLIR E4. Initial testing seems to suggest it blows my Harbor Freight thermal camera out of the water (to nobody's surprise).

@@bakonfreek I would definitely be interested in hearing about your experiences with this camera.

I’m still going to have to test it with some TIG welding, but initial use (with absolutely zero looking at the cheatbook-instructions-until after the fact) has me kind of impressed. I thought it was just doing a really good job of imitating FLIR’s edge detect thing. Nope, that was entirely the thermal element doing the heavy lifting so, this bad boy has some range (while not accurate to 0.1°F at range, I can spot mechanical/bearing problems on 480V motors from across the room and I can trace hydraulic actuators to their branch points from the main line when I dial emissivity back a little).
I’ll also need to have a go with a 480 motor which has tested bad on a megger and see if I can spot the ground fault because I’d assume for a split second, there has to be plenty of current passed at the fault before the heaters on the starter kill the whole circuit (work uses both PTC based heaters and the much older mechanical twisty heaters, but they both stay on long enough that I’m almost sure a bad motor would produce some heat at the fault point).
So, uhh, I dunno, if Kaiweets has a crack at parsing the comments, there’s their industrial approval. Obviously I can’t use it as a proper stand-in for some tasks (same reason the company I work for would *REALLY* prefer I pester them about buying me a Fluke multimeter to replace my trusty Ames Instruments backup meter), but in a pinch, when push comes to shove, this thing (metaphorically) hauls.
