Clueless Disney Guests Visiting the Characters | Confessions of a Theme Park Worker

  • One thing that was clear when I worked with the characters at Walt Disney World… there were a lot of guests that just had no clue what was going on around them.
A behind the scenes look at what a former worker at Disney World, Silver Dollar City, and Busch Gardens Florida experienced in his time working at the parks. From driving large safari trucks around live wild animals while cracking one silly joke after another, to spending 5 years as a #PhotoPass photographer at #WaltDisneyWorld and seeing and experiencing all sorts of things, to being a conductor and #trainrobber on the famous Frisco Silver Dollar Line at #SilverDollarCity. With 10 years of working in the parks, there's lots of stories to tell. Here is some of them...
Not only did I work in theme parks for 10 years, I've visited a whole lot of them as well. Here's some stories of great visits, not so great visits, favorites, reviews, and much more.

Late 90s, My daughter was about 6 and my son was 3. He followed her everywhere. Jasmine was out in front of Morocco. There wasn't a line, just people gathered around in a semi circle, I don't think there was an attendant then. I don't recall. My kids turn is next. They have that nervous tension, well my daughter did, my son just being a boy. They start to walk up, Jasmine had her arms out in greeting with a big smile and... two pre-teen boys who clearly were just starting puberty, giggling, rushed towards Jasmine almost knocking down my kids. Before I could go into protective dad mode, Jasmine instantly motioned for my kids to stop, and politely but sternly told the two boys to "Wait your turn." Then completely focused all her attention on my kids. Awesome. My wife went up to King Louie of the Apes to get his autograph. She was holding drinks, autograph books, and was trying to move quickly for the other guests. She is handing Louie the books but things are falling out of her hands on the ground. I was recording and try to help her but she was so flustered she and I did not notice his hands are solid. He can't hold a pen. She didn't understand it at first, then the light bulb went off. She laughed, I laughed, the CM laughed - and I got it all on video

I was a make a wish kid in 2009 with a trip to Disney world, universal, and sea world. The things the cast members do when they see the make a wish badge really make your trip special so thanks for helping me and my family make some good memories out of 2009. (Weather we crossed paths or not)

I know it's only temporary until your studio is ready but I kind of like these videos outside on your back porch. Very peaceful & serene.

As a guest my dad, sister and I were waiting in line for space mountain. One of the rockets had some younger (teens early 20s) guys in it who were pretty loud and rowdy. They started yelling as their rocket was going. Obviously they were having a good time in the park and I didn’t care that they were yelling but some others did I guess. A cast member then walks up to my sister my dad and me and loudly tells us to be quiet. Maybe the cogs weren’t really working in his head that day because it was obvious that it was coming from the rocket area and not were we were.
I’m sure that he was probably just having a rough day and wasn’t thinking right and just needed someone to yell at. My dad told him we didn’t yell and he later apologized to us.

That is ruder than the yelling. *EXTREMELY RUDE* Almost abusive.

I think as a guest you forget that Cast Members see a lot more then you realize. I think theme parks can fry a normal persons brain and turn an already knob-job into a moron. It was very cool to hear your perspective. My pet peeve is when standing in a line and it starts to move and the people are not paying attention and don't move up. Same ones that let their kids run all over in the line. Even if it's 2 ft, darn it, move the 2ft!

I will never forget being in the MetLife pavilion at EPCOT. It's been closed so long I can't remember the name of it lol. We were standing there and there was an old couple sitting near us. Minnie Mouse came out right where we were and started going towards my kids. All of a sudden this ugly (and she really was) old lady pushes my young kids out of the way (yes, she put her hands on them) and goes to get her picture taken with Minnie (no photographer, just our own cameras). The attendant just looked at me and shrugged. I was really angry, and while my kids were with Minnie I let that old prune-face have it. She pretended not to speak English, of course, even though I had heard her speak English to Minnie. I just said "You should be ashamed of yourself" and walked away. Minnie gave my kids some extra love to make up for it lol.

My daughter just left Disney Photopass. She had the funniest guest on one of her last days. Guy asked why Charlie Chaplin was holding Mickey’s hand. Yes she was shooting partners! Lol!!! So it’s not just the characters who people are clueless about. Not to mention ROY bench. Nobody knows who Roy is!

Thanks for sharing these memories. I appreciate you starting off by stating that most guests were fine and being positive about us. Unfortunately all too often on social media when you see former theme park employees all of their comments are just vitriol and complaints about guests. I don't really know how "theme park" specific a lot of the "clueless" behaviors are though. If you go to major beach towns, Times Square in NYC, the Mall area in DC and lots of other places, many of the same things happen. I'm sure that most of the people are perfectly normal and nice. I think a lot of it has to do with people being in new places, frequently tired and hot, not used to having the whole family around, kids being kids, etc. It's still annoying, but I don't think it's necessarily something to blame people for. I also liked the MaW shout out. One time when I was very young at WDW there was a MaW child in a wheelchair, who was clearly extremely ill and in a lot of pain. The memory stuck with me because many guests became quiet when he was wheeled by. He was clearly happy to be there but also struggling. My mother and many guests who saw him started crying while the family clearly was trying to enjoy the time there. In any case I am happy to let any of the MaW families cut us in line.

Maybe I'm just dating myself. All I remember is when I was young. My parents never took us anywhere until we proved that we could act like adults in a public atmosphere. If we got sick and tired of not going where they went, we had to show that we could act like adults when we were there. My parents had no problem leaving us home, my grandmother live next door so I always had a babysitter. And I'll tell you if we ever got out of line or acted stupid as she like to put it, once we got out in the parking lot it was fair game. She didn't hide from anybody the fact that she spanked me really good. It's amazing how many places we went where I actually was able to wait in line and act like a human being instead of a crazy kid today that always runs around acting like a fool. Even the good kids today had nothing on me at their age. I would have gotten punished for acting like them too.

When I was a kid the first and only time I went to Disney two adults shoved past us to meet Stitch as the movie had just come out ad was super popular I was in first grade so about 6/7 my little sister was about 5/6 my brother was about ten. And when I say these people were running and screaming to push passed us to meet stitch I mean limbs flailing sweat dripping all that.
I was so upset because we were part of the group that didn’t get to meet him. I did meet a few people though and my parents let us each get an extra souvenir to make up for that.

It seems that sometimes there is just a cattle-like mentality, especially at crowded areas like theme parks, where people see a line and stand in it without knowing what it was for, simply because it was a line and other people are standing there too. I'm sure those are the ones who go "duh" when they get to the front

Did you heard the rumor they took my beloved Tinkerbell away???? Hope not she is my most favorite one and last time was focused for my Give Kids the World Mission to catching as most Signatures for my donation item so I couldn´t even having naughty or flattering thoughts just enjoyed and was so happy having some sweet interactions that hopefully stays forever to me they were so pretty special and all of them were so sweet nice and gentle as well to me and more than welcome to support my mission and giving me those signatures.
This time around I hope I can be more dreamy about them but in honrable way still a gently giant lovely beast that wish to find one day his Princess breaking my curse at least in my ways. But I hope it is okay to adore them nice and sweetly, they bringing joy to me seeing them forgetting those nasty times and the nasty things that happend to me in those ugly times.

I'm not sure if this is an idea you'd want to do for a video - how Disney Adults aren't necessarily a bad thing, even when they react emotionally to characters. There's an unfortunately loud group trying to say that Disney Adults are all bad when it's people behaving badly that are bad - and some of those are Disney Adults. Some are kids. Some are parents with kids.
