In their cross-promotion with "Red VS Blue" from Rooster Teeth, "Death Battle" presents to you a fight to the death between two epic Freelancers: The Meta and Carolina. Will Meta claim another AI, or will Carolina put him down for good?

the true explanation for why he lost is because he gets distracted by any type of ai he can find.

Technically it's not him but rather the eight other A.Is in his head being too distracted from seeing their 'Father' for the first time.

As much as I like this battle, i can't help but feel conflicted by the ending. Sure The Meta was distracted, but the Brute shot has never been known to outright do that much damage. Everyone who's been hit by it never experienced any loss of limbs or just explode from it (granted in the Halo games they have never allowed that), but even in RvB, the Brute shot was a major stun/knockout weapon. And when its used as such close range like that, both Meta and Carolina should have felt the raw force of that thing (season 8 episode Reunion for example).
I don't know. I expected Carolina to win, as much as i really wanted Meta to win but...I agree with Ris. The ending could've been better at least.
The Metas head didnt explode because of the weapon itself, but because it was the finishing blow. Its death battle, they always end in a fatality. The shot would have normally knocked the meta out, like you said, but if the meta didnt bleed and/or lost at least one body part, it wouldnt be a death battle.
This wasn't really a cross promotion, it was simply a crossover episode. Yeah, this does offer up some cross promotion indirectly, but that obvioydly wasn't the main focus.

2.) I feel the reason you had a hard time with the ending was because you didn't watch Red V Blue (or at least the freelancer arc) the ending does make a lot of sense when you do watch the full series

I watched the entire series and the ending was still retarded. alot of people glorifying it and the stories here from the series. but no, the ending still made no sense. lol.

The fight ended because Meta is obsessed with finding Alpha, and when Epsilon showed up, being basically Alpha, confused all the AI and they freaked out so Carolina had a chance to shoot Maine. But that's the fight showed, and as we all know, the fight is an epic act to display the outcome chosen. The match up was basically decided because the Meta is crazy and all the AI are fragmented and don't really work too well together, even if they have a common goal, 8 minds all in one head is going to be much less effective than 2 minds, a much more collected AI with Carolina.

The ending of the fight is weird for those who haven't seen season 6 of red vs blue because they kinda copy how the Meta was defeated by Washington because he was distracted by an AI.
I'd say, just based on how it was presented, it was closer to how Maine got distracted by Epsilon in Season 8. Though, I would have preferred it be the same as in Season 6 because the Meta was way more distracted than here where he's just kind of staring at Epsilon and completely misses that Carolina's going for his Brute Shot.

The guy's info is flawed and he apparently did not understand that all those AI's influenced the Meta's mind negatively so he could barely strategize and because Epsilon manage to distract him, Carolina manage to turn the tables on him.

Ah, Red vs. Blue. The show that goes from a bunch of funny guys standing around talking to a badass Action-Comedy...
And yeah, although I love Red vs. Blue to Death, I feel like Death Battle shouldn't take two guys from the same Universe. It kind of messes with the whole point of he show.
Normally, I'd agree, but in this case, since it was part of Season 14 of RvB and joining in the fun of it, I can let it slide.
They have done battles for the Pokemon Gen 1 Starters and the Ninja Turtles before. Yeah, those were battle royales, which I've seen some people say makes them more special than this type of battle (personally, I don't agree), but it's enough of a precedent to show that if they really want to, they can make battles between characters in the same show.

The point of the show is to take two people who would have never fought and pit them against each other in a fight to the death, considering the Meta died before Carolina could have fought with him it doesn't mess with the show at all.
Just because people have the same goal doesn't mean they think alike. Ganondorf and Bowser have the same type of ambition and thirst for conquest but are otherwise completely different.
Haha and we've seen them work on the same side before (in Brawl) and we know how that turned out.
Here's the thing ris. The 8 ai like 8 people trying to work on 1 body. The ai aren't capable or used to working as a team with other ai, rather just one person. Yeah, the Meta can operate with the ai, but not on his own. He can kill, but only because that's what he can do only. Not to mention, all of those ai have the goal, to get epsilon, making them distacted from killing Carolina. Yeah, it's hard to take in and I don't expect people to know all that. It was mostly for rvb fans (including me) and doesn't fit the regular death battle fan, I mean, did you see the comments? But, in my honest opinion, I like this and this as a death battle is decent.
My issue with this battle is that the analysis completely left out what led to Meta's defeat to Carolina. They say it's him not having a working relationship but really it's him AND ALL THE AI are distracted. The only reason the RVB guys lasted as long as they did against the Meta was literally any time an AI would show up he would prioritize getting the AI over killing whomever he was fighting. Not only that but the AI's themselves had almost a fanatical belief in the alpha AI and would flip their shit at the opportunity to talk about it.

But in this case they didn't mention it after the battle it what I'm saying.
They did mention a bit on how Carolina was able to match most of The Meta's advantages (martial arts and her Humbler device made it so she wouldn't get too hurt during close quarters even with The Meta's Super Strength and wrestling styles). Healing is also sometimes a deciding factor, since the fighter than can recover more during a fight tends to last longer instead of running out of steam and ending up being less effective (the one big exception we've seen was Wolverine vs. Raiden, where Raiden could dead a death blow that Wolverine could not recover from).
My issue isn't that Meta lost. I agree with them. My point is Ris was confused why Meta didn't kill Carolina when he had the chance. The reason being he is obsessed with collecting AI's and that he has a history of being distracted by AI's. Had they mentioned that I don't think Ris would have been as confused as he was.

For the most part, it seems like for the Meta, he gets a bunch of different orders all at once (each AI providing their own calculations and suggestions all at once) while Carolina only has to listen to one AI and can make her own decisions independently.
Kind of like the effect of trying to perform a task while a bunch of people are trying to tell you what to do as opposed to just having one instructor that works with you, it is just easier when there are less distractions and conflicting instructions.

The angle you thought of at the end of the video about the AI in The Meta would not work, because what they explained is that they are all different personalities meaning the AIs would not all be thinking the same think and be trying to make their own judgement calls times 8. It's too much of a mess for them to work together because not all personalities fit together

You remember when Caboose shot Church with the tank and Church came back as a ghost? Yeah, Church wasn't a ghost. His AI self got seperated from the human body he controlled, leaving him as a mere AI. So when he "posessses" someone, he just takes full control over their armor and basically brainwashes them.

This episode was both an episode of Death Battle and the thirteenth episode of Red vs Blue Season 14, which is a season of vignettes. This was ScrewAttack's contribution to it.
The reason the end to this battle doesn't make much sense is because they really downplayed both how badass Church is (he can do everything all the other AIs can do and more) and how annoying it'd be to have multiple AIs. Maine's AIs specifically are: an evil mastermind, 3 AIs that hate him and were friends with people the Meta killed, a bloodthirsty psychopath, a troll who just wants to mess with everyone, and two AIs that can get very easily distracted. Try getting anything done with that mess arguing over all your thoughts.
In RvB, it's been shown that even with the same goal, the different AI disagree with the methods, even to the point that the Freelancers had to shut them up. So it does make sense that Meta's head would be filled with constant arguing and conflicting commands

Monty Oum got on as an animator in later seasons of RVB, so it definitely ramped up the action later in the series.
carolina and church are almost like family and work well together because of that. the meta was a psychopathic puppet controlled by sigma and had many ai with different personalities, most of those in direct conflict with each other at all times. another thing is that in the show meta had a major track record of being distracted by ai each time one appeared in front of him in the show causing him to be either stunned or make completely illogical and crazy decisions in the middle of fights, so it does make sense that hed lose like that, though it was pretty anticlimactic.
I like how towards the end of the fight Meta loaded the brute shot and proceeded to throw it...

Meta may have more AI fragments and they may be aligned, but they are not a singular AI. Instead they operate in a fashion similar to a group of people all shouting their own ideas on how to reach the same goal. A "Do this!" "No do this!" type of deal.
The ending was based on the fact that, throughout the story of RvB, Meta's goals are AI > all, and you could here all the AI's whispers when Church started talking to Meta. Because they wanted to be whole, and Church was the last key to that, they all started switching their focus on to Church. The Death Battle people didn't explain that, so it's understandable why people would be confused.

You can think of Red VS Blue season 1-5 as an experimental phase for the series. It is currently 14 seasons and still has its humor now mixed with the a lot more serious matters for the story.

Last episode of season six, Church A.I. Distracted the other A.I.s and meta while Washington activated the EMP. Season eight when meta was going to kill the Reds, Church again distracted the meta, breaking his focus. The meadows weakness is his intense interest in A.I.s.

+Ris Grestar While this is my favorite episode of the season (and you are correct, I am a fan of both series already), it does have one notable flaw, that being that they could've done a much, much better job explaining the reasons behind Meta's loss. They didn't go into how obsessed his is with AIs, and how they can easily be a huge distraction for him (which is what happened with Epsilon at the end). They could've gone into what the personalities of the Meta's different AI are like (the ones we've seen in the series are highly different (one is scientific, relatively kind, and calculative, another is cunning and manipulative, one's basically just crazy and mustache-twirling levels of evil, and one even used to be a member of Blue Team before being captured by the Meta) and probably wouldn't get along very well. They could've went into how, as Epsilon is the memory of the Alpha, he actually contains copies of all the AI the Meta possesses (something they didn't touch on at all). They should've been more specific about what exactly it takes to push Epsilon too far (it's slightly more than what she attempts here). And they could've talked about how Carolina's EMP function (seen on her list of armor enhancements) could've screwed with Meta's Time Distortion (a burst of energy was once used to overload that technology and turn it against him) or even outright destroyed his AI (they were destroyed this way in the series, though whether Carolina's EMP is powerful enough is a bit up for debate) and, since AI are necessary to run armor enhancements effectively, essentially rendered his best abilities useless. So, in conclusion, I thought it was a great episode. The fight was well choreographed and beautifully animated, the writing was funny and filled with inside jokes for Red vs. Blue fans, and I do agree with the result, but their reasoning behind that decision was far weaker than usual.
Three things to keep in mind that may alleviate the annoyance you have with the outcome:
1: The Meta was eventually taken out by the Reds and Blues. Yes, they are some of the worst fighters you could ever hope to find but they came through and won in the end. How? With teamwork. Teamwork allowed them to defeat the Meta and teamwork was what did the Meta in once again here. And I can say with all confidence that Carolina and Epsilon-Church are MUCH better at teamwork than the Reds and Blues were back then.
2: Most or all(sorry, it's been a while) of the AI fragments beyond Sigma were forcefully integrated. Before that they were possessed of very different personalities matched with Freelancers which complimented them and, though Sigma was able to bring them under his control, that control was not complete. This is what created the dissonance among them mentioned in the video.
3: There was a secondary effect to using his Time Displacement power that the Meta didn't count on. In slowing down time it also prevented Epsilon-Church from short circuiting by shortening the length of time he was forced to run all of Carolina's enhancements. Otherwise that may have been the end right there.
That may not help, but, hey, some extra background can never hurt.
Yes, it's shocking to think about how Red Vs Blue began and to realize that it would eventually become one of the greatest science fiction epics I have ever known. The major changes began in season 7 though bits a pieces, such as Freelancers and AI pairings, began showing up as early as season 1. But season 7 is when animator Monty Oum(1981-2015, RIP) joined the team and brought his skills with CGI animation and martial arts to the Rooster Teeth team. But don't worry, there is still a ton of silly comedy stuff mixed in with the action.
they mentioned quickly that Sigma (the one in control of Meta's head) had the main goal of forming a full AI, the AI's at the start of the battle even told Meta to take church, so he stopped attacking because Church showing up distracted the AI in there need to "collect" him too. Thus allowing Carolina to win. It wasn't really that clear in the fight but, in the show it was shown quite a bit that they wanted the AI above all else
Season 5 is where it went from sketches to a full blown universe
It's because the Meta wanted to become a perfect AI is why it lost. When Epsilon appears, it distracted the Meta long enough for Carolina to counterattack. It happened a few times in series. Whenever an AI is brought up when the Meta was nearby, he would drop everything and go after it

Technically, unless the math is wrong (which it often is), Church then spent 410 YEARS in the Memory Unit, according to RvB Lore.

I would recommend rewatching Red Vs Blue. From season 4 and onward, not only does it get REALLY funny, but I find that the story telling just gets better.
Season 6 is when we see the Meta.
this makes sense for the fans. Meta is often distracted by AI. Especially in Epsilon. The AI have different personality and while they all want the same thing they would have different opinions on how to go about it.
You missed the line where they said Meta's head is filled with eight voices all talking at once. Meta is a steering wheel and the AI are like 8 hands all trying to steer in a different direction.

True. The fragments want to form one A.I. But they're all different. They have different personalities with different ideas. So, that won't match up well. Carolina and Epsilon bonded well after season 10. So they may have the same tactics and have the same thoughts. Tex even said that once someone is in your head for awhile, you get to know them.

Ya, Basicly the moment when Red Vs Blue started to get to "Aliens are playable in Multiplayer?" Some odd plot started popping it's head around, and it came out, we had some tea, then started to make every silly thing you saw and knew suddenly make sense, and little sense at all.
the best way to understand this outcome is to understand what meta was after. he was after AI's because of the AI's in his head talking to him. you'll need to watch seasons 6-10 to fully understand.
Ris, I get where you are coming from. But can I explain. Church is the Memory of the first AI giving him the full range of emotions. However all the other AI were only a few emotions so they had a much lower cooperation. Also the end was where all the AI say the last fragment they were discussing what to do. The rest was equal but a AI who has the full range of emotions and can think without arguing with 7 other completely different people. Its like a vote where everyone has to come into consensus but they all argue and are inflexible, vs two people who trust each other like brother and sister. I see where your skepticism comes from but i hope this helped clear things up.
I think the main reason is because the original A.I. was tortured into splitting itself into multiple A.I.s with each having different personalities and some of them might not be 'mentally' stable. So I can agree that Meta had to listen to what is easily a jumbled mess of voices telling him different things on how to fight or what to achieve. It's kind of like the ZERO system that Gundam Epyon used in its death battle against the Tigerzord, so much information being fed into your mind in an instant, but your mind couldn't process all of it. At least that's the only thing I can think of that would make the most sense.
my only issue with the ending is that Meta in the series has never shown to have the problem of having all the AI in head cause him to to faulter in battle.
Now he has shown that when in the presence of Church/Alpha, he will hesitate and freeze up, so I'm not saying he should win, but it's always annoying to me when they make assumption of characters to justifie fight outcomes.
Someone may have already made this comment, but;
The reason the battle ended the way it did was due to the Meta's fascination/obsession with epsilon, as he is an AI. Throughout the RvB series, whenever the Meta encountered an AI (or even the possibility of finding one) he would forget what he was doing and chase that. Even if he were in the middle of a fight at the time.
Heck, he even turned on his own allies to do so before he died.
A lot of people have always argued that Meta would have decapitated Carolina when he activated his temporal distortion, but remember that the AI chip was in the back of the head and Meta would never risk damaging it
The reason Maine didn't kill Carolina when he had the chance was because he was distracted by epsilon. Sigma's, and by extension the Meta's goal is to reunite all the AI fragments and reform the alpha. When Meta saw Epsilon, (the last AI he needed), the AI he already had were caught off guard, thus letting Epsilon distract the Meta while Carolina grabbed his brute shot.
I found the series streaming on Netflix, it's just each season being combined into volumes.
They really neglected to mention the meta's weaknesses. He was obsessed with gathering AI fragments he was once beaten in the series in an almost exactly the same way with church distracting meta while the companion deals a strategic blow.
I was surprised that Carolina beat The Meta since this one was extremely close at the end there. But all and all, it's a cool fight and it's now a favorite for me but with the next fight with Cammy and Sonya, I think Sonya's going to win but I won't be too disappointed with Cammy wins but I guess we'll find out next week since the next fight will air on August 17th for the Public but First Members get to see it on August 15th.
A way to think about it if it helps is twitch plays Pokemon. Each of the different AI has different opinions and thoughts on how to best proceed at any time so they trip over their own feet. 2nd note is that given what he said and the motion Carolina made she already had the gun. By the time Church started talking Carolina had already won the battle. (this in itself was a reference to the meta's canonical death with a different callback one-liner). Finally season 1's Hagar vs Zangief was another non-joke battle between two characters in the same universe. I always wished that they would do more same universe fights and I think that it is unfortunate that people forget that one.
The last thing I heard from it was from the first season finale. "It's not red vs blue! It's (explosion)"
Keep in mind, Epsilon distracting the Meta in the end isn't WHY Carolina would win, it's just how ScrewAttack made her win in this scenario they made. They decided that Carolina would win before making the actual fight. That's just how they made her win.
Church was always an A.I. but he thought he was human because he had a robotic body which is what YOU remember from season 3
"Red VS Blue" is an action-comedy thing, and it always has been. But over time, as the animation has improved, the action part has kind of grown somewhat.
I don't know the characters, but I feel the same doubt you did Ris. Meta was basically destroying her until that last second which seemed somewhat out of nowhere. I also felt that 8 AI would provide 8 different perspectives instead of a jumbled mess. Apparently people are saying Meta gets distracted by AI, which is the real reason he lost. I'm, quite frankly, not willing to accept it but it's not like Gaara Vs Toph where I'll keep bringing it up every chance I get.
In the show Meta gets distracted by AI just as he's about to win a fight multiple times (3 times if I remember correctly), so Epsilon distracting him is perfectly in character and makes sense. It should also be noted that while you say it would provide 8 perspectives, they would all be being given at the same time which would just lead to immense amounts of information being given to Maine all the time, which would just confuse him because he can't focus on any of it, especially while also fighting.

Also, the results of that fight would make more sense if you've seen the entire Red vs Blue series. While the series did get a bit more serious, it still is pretty hilarious. :)
Well a huge thing about the meta is that the a.I. don't make him smarter and getting defeated right in the nick of time is a common thing for him. This is because he gets distracted when he's about to finish off his opponent.
Meta did indeed have the upper-hand, but A.I. and Freelancers work best when its a mutual relationship. Meta had a bunch of A.I. and can't really form a relationship with any of them because there's so many voices in his head. Not only that, but the A.I. also were distracted by Epsilon(who's also one of the A.I. they've been looking for) and Meta has no free will of his own to act against them. The A.I. ended up killing the Meta instead of saving him. Instead of being one of his strengths, they ended up as his greatest weakness.
I was okay with the ending but I can understand why people would find it iffy. I thought Meta essentially being a mindless slave to the AIs, eight very different voices all at once telling him what to do and how to do it, would have been a major factor in the fight. I wish they could have been a bit clearer with the "jumbled mess" that was going on in his head though; maybe they could've shown him acting indecisive, frustrated or confused (like shaking his head or pausing when orders conflicted with each other for example).
Actually, they do! At least two times in the fight, you can see him about to do something before doing something else. The first time was after he was disarmed, he looks at his weapon, before turning around to fight with his fists.
The second time was in their second melee fight after he's kicked her away, he moves his arm to grab his weapon, only to move it back to grab her and slam her into the ground.

You said the way he died in the show was stupid, Luke he could have prevented it. There is am explanation in the show.
Before this encounter, he had been hit with an EMP, which killed all of the AI he had, which left him a shell. Right before the fight he manages to yoink an AI from the reds and blues so he could use his abilities at a reduced capacity, he was nowhere near his peak at the time
the reason meta's ai were messed up is because: one the ai did not neccesarily want to be one, and also the ai WERE NOT one, and each ai has different personalities
The problem with this Death Battle is if you are caught up on Red vs Blue the outcome makes sense and the battle is awesome. If you have no idea who these characters are The outcome will make no sense. One thing they don't mention but is essential to know is the ending of season 6. -SPOILERS- Meta is trying to gather all AI fragments into one super AI to become whole again. The Alpha is where all the AI fragments come from and distracted the other AI's in the end for an EMP to be activated. Much like the end of this death battle Epsilon which has the memories of Alpha used the same tactic to distract all of the AI.

But if you don't agree with the result completely, just pretend it ended before Church distracted him. I do that sometimes but, I'm like you, I never argue with the results for these fights. Anyway, have you seen Gaming All Stars before? If not, can you ask GamingAllStarsGmod if you can react to it? You'll meet new fictional characters, see some old friends.
Even with them having the same goals, they could have different ideas to accomplish them. For example, let's say you have a friend who wanted you to take one specific route and another had a different route. Despite going to the same place, it'll take a while before you can decide which one to take.
Now imagine that with eight people.
Good reaction, but you having not watched the series plays an impact. You were saying Carolina would run out of power faster, but they said that because of Meta's stronger armor and many more armor enhancements, where it takes like 10x more battery than a normal armor. They said in RvB that only a FULL AI would be able to run it smoothly, while Meta had 7 AI fragments, they still didn't equal a real AI, so his suit couldn't handle the power. And if you remember, the fragments were made by the AI's raw emotions, there's creativity, logic, fear, etc. and when different emotions come together, they can't agree! They give different commands and they don't just control the body, they tell Maine what to do, so he has to first make sense of what they want him to do, which is what was happening in the last scene of the fight, he saw Church, the AI fragment, and didn't know what to do for a moment, it happened in RvB, and it only took 1 second for Carolina to grab the gun and win.
Also, it wasn't really cross promotion, Rooster Teeth and Screwattack are now fully together and Red vs Blue is a popular web series. People wanted to know, and Screwattack had the legitimate information from Rooster Teeth so they did it as a show from Red vs Blue to make it legit.
You have missed a lot. Including the fact that Caboose took on an army Tex's. Also there is a high probability that caboose might just end up ending the world.

Actually Ris, about the AIs.
You see Meta's AIs have one goal, to find and become one with the Alpha AI. Church in this fight was the Epsilon AI, Alpha's memories, basically a perfect copy of Alpha. In the end of the fight Meta and his AIs became distracted thanks to Epsilon, giving Carolina the opening she needed to win.
In short, Epsilon distracted Meta because he was Meta's goal, giving Carolina the win.
And spoiler, something like this happens in the show, Meta's is about to win, get's distracted by Alpha and then gets defeated.
Also, Maine was brainwashed to do what the AIs wanted, Maine is nothing but a tool to the AIs, a tool they use for nothing but to attack. While Carolina and Church actually care about each other and changed from attack to defence.
Carolina win was legit.
One thing that bug's is why the hell did they use modern Carolina against the obviously outdated Meta.
Like, Carolina is using modern equipment from her decade.
While Meta is using the modern equipment from the last decade or so...
Plus the experience difference over the year's pretty much screw's the whole battle over.
They are literally putting a Tiger Tank against a Abrams tank in a fight.
Let's be honest, this fight was more exciting and better than the movie it was parodying in the title. *cough, cough*(Batman vs Superman)
this death battle episode is also kind of an opener to the next season of red vs blue. That's why the layout seems deviated from the norm. also, super spoilers for anyone who hasn't watched red versus blue.
The AI the Meta has are also obsessed with getting more AI, and have gotten distracted by that obsession before.
in the main series the meta would go after the A.I. rather than his main objective.
I am SO glad I forgot this death battle when I went to watch Red vs Blue. So many spoilers.
Due to watching all seasons 5 times minimum, I can fill you in. On the story behind Church
SPOILER ALERT!
The Church you know is the original Alpha AI but was destroyed with the other AI by an EMP. Epsilon was the memory that was saved by(I kid you not) Caboose. Caboose than told Epsilon about the times the Reds and Blues had, in his own perspective(so those will be some crazy stories). Eventually, Epsilon just picked up those memories and acted like Church again. Yeah it was weird.
As for the Meta being distracted by Epsilon, he has been distracted by AIs before. Let's give Meta the benefit of the doubt and say that he can't be distracted, Epsilon can create memories of those AIs, including Meta's AI partner, Sigma.
As for next time: Cammy is from Street Fighter and Sonya is from Mortal Kombat. You'll learn about them when it comes out.

True, i dont know some characters but I love Death Battle. Ive never played a Metal Gear game or a Splinter Cell game, and hardly knew them, but their fight was one of my favorites.

Really, the Meta is a mindless husk following the commands of Sigma, someone who is only interested in finding all the AI. When Epsilon appeared to talk to him, that was something new that he wasn't prepared for. It distracted him.
It ceased being pure comedy after season 5. And oh boy is it one of the best series out there. And the reason the Meta died was from the frigid waters filling in his suit through the stab hole.
