Most shockingly, the protagonist chooses the RIGHT girl. At the beginning of the series, it looked like Kaede, Sia, or Nerine would be the primary contenders. Asa just looked like she'd be a part of the supporting cast, even though it was clear from the beginning that she was the best of the girls.
He lost both his parents and still pick the hardest decision. Kaede lost her mother, and still has her father. Honestly I feel sad for the father more since he cant bring Kaede to be happy again.
As much as I love Shuffle, my biggest issue with the show was Rin himself. I honestly wish we saw some emotion from him, the man had a very difficult life, losing both of his parents and being abused horribly by Kaede growing up, he's almost too perfect. Would have liked to see some sadness from him, or him showing sadness from all the pain he went through growing up. I completely understand his character is someone who cares about the people around him, but he's a man with feelings too.

While the fault resides with drunk driver, one can throw dozens of accusations at Fate itself for putting the cars together at that moment. What if an earlier traffic light had delayed them? What if one of their parents forgot something and had to run back in real quick to get it? What if two other cars got in a fender bender and slowed traffic? What if they had to drive through a construction zone? What if the drunk guy had one more drink before hitting the road? What if the drunk guy got pulled over by the cops? etc. You can come up with all sorts of "What if" scenarios that would have kept Rin's parents and Kaede's mom alive. To quote the movie Twister: Jo: You've never seen what that thing can do so don't talk to me about... Bill: I JUST SAW IT! Jo: YOU'VE NEVER SEEN IT!! Jo: You've never seen it miss this house, and miss that house, and come after you. Bill: Christ Jo, is that what you think it did? Jo: You don't know. Bill: Jesus Jo, why can't you just forget it? Out of that atonement came feelings for Rin. Those feelings were put in jeopardy as Rin became a ladies man and eventually Kaede relapsed into the former extreme. Also Rin is not entirely blameless for his actions after the accident either. Hiding the postcard and then lying to Kaede for years to keep her status quo in hating him over accepting the past. Moreover after Kaede started making "amends", Rin was as clueless as a blind guy in a minefield to Kaede's romantic feelings towards him. And he just let her dote on him like it was nothing. Talk about obtuse. He should have had the "Come to Jesus" talk with Kaede years ago. Not after that house of cards started crashing down. Furthermore Kaede's dad is in the crosshairs too. When Kaede lost her will to live, her father could not bring himself to face the music and be there for his daughter in her time of need. Making Rin jump on that grenade instead which lead to him making up the tale about how it was his fault and making Kaede despise him and try to injure him. Even during those times he can't bring himself to tell Kaede the truth until things finally get so far out of hand in the games that he finally ends it. On one final note they really fucked Kaede's character over from the games to the anime. In the games she's completely different with the same deep issues I'm chatting about in this essay. In the games she never goes all yandere. But in the games if you take Asa's route, Kaede has a breakdown in her arms after learning she's not destined to be with Rin. As far as the anime went they really screwed Kaede over on her ending. Instead of being devoted to Rin they should have made strike her own fresh path of independence. Still being close to Rin as friends, but taking in a new outlook on her life and what she'll do with it.
