    Yes I am a JKD guy and this guy understands and explains from experience how to use the different styles from kicking, punching, trapping, ground fighting and there perspective ranges within that style being effective through the progression of each. Bruce Lee and I quote if you can’t finish the fight in 60 seconds or less you have no business fighting. I like this guy he is good, we can learn a lot from him!

      Still I don't totally agree with him. Boxing is no ordinary combat sport. Boxing would have overcomed soccer in terms of sports though fighting isn't everyone's cup of tea. That's why, it is far behind the track. Mike Tyson & Muhammad Ali is said to be above bruce Lee's caliber. So, I bet its quite understandable

      Most definitely boxing itself is very similar to different styles of martial arts, it requires training and exercise. Boxing vs boxing in fighting size (weight and height) absolutly play a role in it. That makes a very large difference and is in reality vastly unfair for one of smaller stature to go up against another of twice their size.
      However when it comes to martial arts/Kung Fu (ofcourse not all, especially those requiring gripping) some types are ment specifically for helping smaller people to take down larger people. Also not all just rely on fists, some actually tend to rather specialize in kicking which can actually be far more popular than our human arms.
      It is absolutely true both Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali were fantastic and supreme fighters in their generation, I myself am a fan of both of them and have watched their fights. On the other hand I am a fan of Bruce Lee as well and have studied about him. Speaking to Lee on the set of the 1973 film Enter the Dragon, director Robert Clause recalls the actor stating, “Everybody says I must fight Ali some day…I’m studying every move he makes. I’m getting to know how he thinks and moves”. But despite his studies, Lee doubted his chances against the iconic fighter, humorously explaining, “Look at my hand…That’s a little Chinese hand. He’d kill me”.
      Now you can take that as Lee being serious, or as being humorous. In all we will never truly know, but as stated and we'll known, Bruce was the father of MMA, he took parts of different types (including boxing itself which he did in Hong Kong) and added that to some of the Wing Chun he left in. Those famous kicks of his definitely are not in Wing Chun (which is 70% hand and 30% feet). Northern China tend to use more feet attacks while Southern China use more arm attacks.
      Lee also happened to be extremely fast, back then when playing as the sidekick in the Geen Hornet as well as some of his own films they had to ask him to slow down his punches and kicks, the technology then simply couldn't keep up with it. I assume that wasn't very commonly heard even then.
      My point is basically if they both were boxers then yes, Bruce Lee would most likely get crushed even with his speed (besides Tyson and Ali were both lightning fast themselves)! The difference is that Lee used MMA and in his case (what many don't understand) it was made to specially suit himself and what worked for him.
      Boxers are tought and trained to fight against other boxers in the ring, Bruce Lee trained to take out an enemy in real life with no rules in any way possible and stepped away from the more reliance on hand combat to both hand and leg then to grappling as well.
      Obviously leg has longer range and as stated before, with excessive training can do far more damage than fist.
      I'd definitely say ther would still be a disadvantage for Bruce Lee do to his size, but with his multiple styles of MMA and the fact he was open to try knew things and actually studied other people (including Muhammad Ali) i think it would have been an interesting battle.
      Now if it was just boxing... with no kicks.... yeah Bruce Lee would most likely get hammered.

    The shots will fly in and retract really fast. What most boxers were taught to either cover up ( very suboptimal ), parry and counter back with a hook or use head movements and footwork to dodge, these actions are the fastest thing a trained human can do while being under stress if we're just talking about upper body defense only

Love to see a live fire spar session with a boxer throwing mix combos of 3-5 punches against this. Just cover, Bob and slip out, this will save you more head trauma hahaha 😂

    Most boxers would not just stand in front and throw straight punches and then pause when they get hit. They are going to move, throw strong punches from different angles and that would easily overcome wing chun techniques. Also, boxers retract their punches making it hard to block if not trap punches. I know from experience from practicing wing chun and found how ineffective it was.

      True, used to practice some wing Chun & karate years way back unless you have at least half the combat I.Q. of ipman or Bruce Lee incorporating all those moves fluidly in midfight on the fly, it really doesn't work in real life some thing as simple as boxing with it's sweet science is very practical & more effective in real life fighting. Muay Thai is very effective also.

      Did 10+ yrs or karate plus some kick-boxing beforehand.
      Really enjoyed the coordination training and has helped my reflexes. But it did not add much to my striking game.
      I did try hard to incorporate it with my previous training.
      The issues i found summed in one sentence. (Happy to elaborate if when i have more time)
      Lack of power and overall poor mobility/distance management.

    I have practiced Kung-fu for 14 Years ( Praying Mantis Style) and Boxing for 1 Year and a Half and I can Say with certainty that Boxing is clearly superior to Kung-fu:
    - Boxing is the Discipline with the most immediate and rapid defense;
    - Boxing has the best guard setting;
    - Boxing has the best footwork ( compared to any discipline);
    - And also Boxing is the Discipline that is learned first and is the most direct and more realistic for a physical fight.

    Wing Chun's enemy is not the punches. It's the foot work and head movement. A good boxer recognizes the trap and uses a step on the 2 or head movement. You throw into an empty space. Wing Chun shines when you start already close like in a stairwell or a bar. But if you think you can counter and enter on a really good boxer, you're wrong.. Another thing wing Chun doesn't take into account is you don't know what will be thrown. A luve shot or break the bottom ribs will drop anyone in a fight just as good as a head shot.
    Learn both arts. They both have specific purpose.

    I think it's pretty safe to say that the individual applying the boxing or trapping decides whether it's effective or not.
    🥊 Boxing emphasizes evasion, range control, and timing to open up opportunities to strike. Where as any kind of trapping emphasizes entering sensitivity, forward energy pressure, and framing structure to bridge, stick, deflect, grab, or strike. Trappers apply leverage or other energy advantages over position and free movement...
    Both ranges are flexible and can transcend each other when applied by a skilled individual...
    Professional boxers probe, pressure-in, hold, tie-up, block, angle, cover, push/pull and manipulate their opponents heads, arms, and body space whenever necessary and when the opportunities present themselves.
    Learn to make your adjustments from open hand, to small gloves, to large gloves, and go up and down the ladder if you want a real feel for what you can work and feel comfortable with.
    Stop relying on stereotypes and lack of personal experience to form your opinions. Go practice your trapping while you box/kickbox/wrestle or practice MMA. Or go box a Thai Boxer, wrestler or, MMA fighter or just try going against another boxer who uses some trapping... 👊

You would have to accurately predict where the next strike is coming from. Three or more strikes a second is hard to work with that way. Let alone if someone throws in a kick or something.

    THANK GOD SOMEBODY FINALLY SAID IT!! I have always known this for years! It should be common sense! At the end of the day its never about style! It is incredibly important that you learn about yourself first, meaning, what you can do and what you cannot do. Any style of fighting is simply an IDEA. You are the individual who takes it and gives it form, which means your form can either be good, or not so good. Then comes the application of the skills you have acquired, which again, circles all the way back to knowing yourself!
    I always like to compare this sort of thing with a professional basketball player. Every one of them is playing the same sport, using the same ball, same goal height, etc. They all practice skills, dribbling, passing, shooting, etc. But they are not all equal when it comes to showcasing their skills in real time, during a game. Even if you put them all on the same program, some will be exceptional, some will be good, some will not be soo good. This is individual ability and is apparent in literally anything you do in life, including martial arts.

    it really doesn't make sense to compare style vs style in terms of whether one works or not bc there is just no objective medium to do so. anything can work depending on the context (fighter, weapons, setting, opponent, etc.) and thus its illogical trying to prove that a martial art doesn't work. its a lot more practical to talk instead about how easy it is to make each style work (which of course is correlated to how much success has been seen by its users)--or HOW applicable it is, rather than whether or not it IS applicable

Footwork and rhythm is the unpredictable part of that style. Watch somebody like lomanchenko or a European boxer that uses their backfoot and dictate the range and exchange. Best thing to do is go mixed style and try and grapple when u can somehow predict when he commits on a combo.
    Boxers are hard to close range on. Because of the footwork and feigning. You never really know when they commit so u can fire off counters.

    I would like to see you sparring with some boxers with full speed and like 30% power. IMO these kind of blocks are beaten by feints. You have to be very calm and masterful to be able to block punches consistently.

    The representation of how a boxer punches is way off. It's why the this strategy wouldn't work, the commitment shown in this video shows how a non boxer throws a bunch and it's. clear where the boxer's weight is. This movement/counter requires over commitment of weight distribution, something you'd rarely see from a boxer, even while doing MMA.

    Wing Chun guys generally do not have almost any chance against good boxers. The boxer's advantage is in strong effective punches, great footwork, ability to avoid punches with body movement (giving boxer immediate opening), stamina and learned timing. The reason why traditional wing chun will lose is lack of real fighting and very bad footwork. They are waiting for opponent to attack and are usually unable to close distance and attack themselfs. I am speaking based from my own experience when I sparred with them years ago while doing shotokan karate. When they train they are usually already close to each other and with their hands touching each other. In free sparring They have nothing to surprise you with and are waiting for your mistake. It is very very difficult for them to actually impose their close distance style on somebody who has a good footwork. Wing Chun guy will try get closer but I am not there anymore. Second later I am able to counter attack with strong punches from middle distance. If you have good timing they are never able to trap your hands. There was one guy who I knew who was able to use wing chun efectively and kind of create his own effective style but he had a lot of karate sparring experience from before and knew how to close distance. Most of the wing chun guys are living in their dream world and it is actually type of bullshido as are pretty much all styles of traditional kung fu. They will do anything to avoid real full contact sparring. Of course there are exceptions. Wing Chun people think that they have unpenetrable defense but believe me they dont and you can get them with uppercut or hook or anything. One time I remember how one was trying those short quick punches and I just landed left hook and the fight was over. That said some principles of wing chun are definitely worth considering. Just one more thing - the bad footwork makes them very vulnerable to takedowns as they dont know how to avoid them.

    Doesn't work like this. I'm not trying to be that guy but I've boxed for almost 15 years, had a chance to go pro but didn't for reasons. I still box and spar with fighters who are on top rank and showbox. I've also studied wing Chun for 15 years. It does not work like this. Your best option to take the fight to them by attack at the same time and getting in on the inside. Once you're in, that's where wing Chun works the best, the clinch range. You're going to get punch in the face and touched up every time if you try to trap on the outside. You can't be last in a fight, you have to be first.
    I love wing Chun so much and I love boxing the same. Please guys, pressure test your wing Chun. Get in there and fight and spar, get beat up, learn how to take a hit, learn how to give one. You'll learn very good spacing and footwork from boxing. Boxing isn't wing Chun enemy, it's the nail in the coffin for your opponents. Once you finish up learning wing Chun, go box. Like for real, like at a hood ass gym where the guys do this for a living. You'll learn so much.

    Looking at most comments below, it has become an argument on who will win a "free-for-all" boxer or WC. Do remember that despite a boxer's devastating punching power, endurance, speed, evasion, and footwork, a boxer's fists are nearly useless in the street without their meticulous wraps and huge gloves. The great Mike Tyson broke his hand punching bare-knuckled in a street fight.

    Some good points here but trapping in my humble opinion, is more applicable as a weapon defense in a battle against, armed combatants or while armed, and against others welding weapons, both blunt or edged, whilst holding a shield and a weapon or with two weapons.
    Kuen sui kuen techniques, are the best techniques a wing chun practioner can use against boxers or even just, an attacker throwing good punches with bad intentions.
    The bong sao can also be useful, but a seriously good striker, is not going to stand flat-footed in front of someone and is going to have head motion and strike and clinch/ pummel, over, under and around. Just my take, I'd love to see someone using trapping with 8oz MMA sparring gloves, in a less choreographed
    scenario, but I have yet to see pure wing chun trapping, used in any combat sports.

    What I am missing from a lot of those exhibitions is how to act when your initial attempt fails. What happens if you miss your first control and you get punched in the face? What do you do? This is not specifically directed to this video, but in an actual fight, you will get punched. How do we deal with that? Let's assume the other person isnt a horrid fighter either, they know how to throw a punch and put up a basic defense. And they land the first blow...

    I am disappointed with another boxer video going bare fisted but using gloved techniques. Manny Sombrada has a lot of vids on barefisted pre Marquis de gloved boxing. Even modern “bare knuckles” boxing is not truly bare knuckles like the guy in this video. English martial arts and Hema have several vids about how old time bare knuckles fighter boxed. Imo, the principles are much closer to WC and JKD than modern gloved boxing. Even in MMA we find smaller gloves are no defense when held up to our cheeks. We need technique like elbow shells to break fists of boxers and then follow through with WC. Please consider the weaknesses of gloved techniques without gloves.👍

When you possess those attributes, you don’t need to trap. But yes, practical on a crowded subway, crowded elevator. Try trapping boxer Ryan Garcias or Floyds jab and you’ll see what I mean.

    Every boxer would shot fast, retracting quickly the fists and keep distance. Trapping or defending against boxer fists is impossible and it’s not the way wing chun is meant. Wing chun only works on closed distance keeping contact with offender’s arms. The way to close distance is only one: act first and close the gap. If the boxer retract his fists, you should better avoid conflict, unless the boxer is not that good, or try to use a different style meant for middle distance. I love wing chun and I have practiced for years, but that’s a sad truth, is not a complete style and works only in some scenarios for self defense.
