Tarja is classically trained opera singer so yes, she can sound operatic. She could sing to a hall of maybe 3000-4000 people without amplification and over an orchestra.
Very obviously it *IS* a masterpiece 😄 Always loved this song & video, and the original Nightwish for all eternity.
Tarja's rich dark classical vocals with the metal music defined the genre of symphonic metal 🥰
As a 97 child born into a metalhead family, Nemo was my gateway drug to metal as 7 year old. The song and the music video absolutely are masterpieces!

So this was with a different singer than the one you saw before. This is with their original singer Tarja (pronounced Tarya and the R is rolled) Turunen (she is Finnish). She is classically trained. Tarja hasn't been in the band for years, decades. She left/got fired in 2005 (for mixed reasons that we really don't know... it's comlecated and better stay out of it). Now the singer is a Dutch lady called Floor Jansen. I believe you already saw a performance with her.
Nightwish has actually had 3 different lead vocalists, first Tarja, then Anette and now we got Floor. All the vocalists are great with beautiful voices. They are very different from each other, yet very talented.
The keyboardist, Tuomas Holopainen (also Finnish), is the brains behind Nightwish. He writes and composes all the music. People also call him the metal Motzart.
If you want to see something live with Tarja as the lead singer of Nightwish, check out a song called Slaying the Dreamer, the live version from End of an Era concert (it's from 2005).
I would recommend all of the End of an Era concert, it's pure gold :D Also very dramatic, as Tarja was fired from the band right after that concert.. Literally. (The other band members gave her the "firing" letter right after exiting the stage...)

This time it was all Finnish members. The singer is Tarja Turunen, the first singer of Nightwish. After her was Anette and now it´s Floor.
The others in this video are Tuomas Holopainen in keys (he writes majority of the songs), Jukka Nevalainen on drums, Marco Hietala bass and Emppu Vuorinen guitar

In fact Tarja is older than Floor. Born September 1977. Besides singing in church since age 4, she sang in school. She went on to study at a Finnish Music Academy then get her masters in Germany singing a style of chamber music meant for the stage long before mic or artificial amplifiers.
The style is called Lied (leed) singing.
This song was the hit that got them to global stardom.
Taa-rr-ee-aa Is a Mezzo Soprano with a 3.5 octave range. Her style is lyrical soprano. She can reach the high notes but also has a warm round chest voice.
She uses vibrato throughout her notes and will extend the vowels vertically.
Now you want to see impressive watch her sing in six inch boot heels while moving, dancing or even jumping on stage and stay in perfect pitch on the note. Anyone unimpressed can try bouncing up and down and try to sing twinkle twinkle little star.

The breath control is lots and lots of practice.
She is seen as a role model and icon to younger women in the business. Always kind, sweet, generous to her fans.
Brought in as founding member of the band with Tuomas (a year ahead at school is how he knew her) and Emppu. They hired a bassist and a drummer. That was the 1st line up until 2001 when they fired the bassist. They hired Marko Heitalllia 10 years older and established as bassist and full time male lead singer. Also has classical training. He left in 2021 for health reasons.
In fact Tarja and Marko have been and will tour together this year for a few weeks.
Tarja calls her fans her WinterStorm.
Now there are those who for some reason seem to want to defend Floor by attacking Tarja, from whom she needs protection from I have no idea. Floor met NW in 02 with her old band when they were the.opening act. They stayed friend since. Tarja and Floor are great friends.

I love Nightwish, but I think there are better songs than Nemo. But still it is very good. Great finnish Metal Bands are Sonata Arctica, Amorphis and Beast in Black, I love them all

Sadly Tarja Turunen is no longer singer of this band.
Tarja can sing in one style perfect, Floor can sing 10 styles perfect. And I am a Nightwish fan from 1995. Loved Tarja but Floor is better.
Floor can’t sing in ten styles and definitely not perfect. She struggles a lot. Tarja sings in more styles this. Classical. Floor stans try so hard. It’s adorable.
Unfortunately, Floor only sings in a pop style with a rock flavor, her attempts to use the classics are laughable. Tarja makes good use of both, and is perfect at crossover.
What is best for you does not apply to others, remember that. Pavosen heska.
