Thanks you Chef AJ and Dr. Weiss. I have worked in medical settings for 40 years and watched patients and co-workers with Crohns Disease be managed with medications and not get better and have to have bowel surgeries over and over. My son has Ulcerative Colitis and reversed this with a Whole Food Plant Based Diet.
I average 115-120 grams of fiber a day. This is based on my fiber logs on chronometer for the last 10 days. Lowest day was 90 grams, high was 147 grams for the highest day. 100% plant based low fat diet. I average about 80% carbs/8-10% fat/10-12% protein per day. Total cholesterol on blood tests averages 125-135. BTW: I'm 6'4" 254 pounds in my profile picture. My lean body mass on a Dexa scan is 213 pounds (that's fat free mass). Lean body mass (LBM) on a DXA scan is the combined weight of your bones, muscles, connective tissues, and organs, excluding fat and I'll be 60 years old in a couple of months. Anyone thinking you can't build muscle on a lower protein diet plant based diet is clueless.
I’m new to fiber counting. Does the fiber in liquids count, or only that of solid foods? For instance, one cup of my soy milk has 4 grams of fiber per label. Can I include that in a count?
My problem as an older woman is that I just cannot eat the amount of green plants to get enough protein and calcium, compared to the volume I could eat even 5 years ago. So I do eat a fair amount of legumes and soy and put pea protein in my smoothies. My chol/LDL are both pretty low and my HSCRP is also very low, so I think it is an OK tradeoff.
I have a rebounder. Within five minutes of gentle bouncing. I need to go to the bathroom. Also helps to lightly steam your veggies also for constipation. Walking is a perfect movement. 😊
Dr. Weiss’s focus on sarcopenia and the importance of building bone mass by building muscle is SO important and appreciated! His Vit D level recommendations are also an important part of the equation. What a kind and incredibly smart man; this was a fantastic and fascinating interview, @Chef AJ!
Yes, yes, yes. I had some type of inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s and put it into remission with a high fiber whole food plant-based diet. It absolutely worked for me.
I would eat oatmeal for breakfast, a very large salad with a cup of garbanzo beans for lunch and a fruit smoothie for dinner (kiwi, papaya etc) and could not go to the bathroom for days and days. I went to a functional medicine doctor and was tested for SIBO and it came back positive for methane dominant SIBO. I had already gone to my primary doctor and a colon specialist and all he recommended was for me to take magnesium daily and had no interest in talking about nutrition when I tried to tell him I ate so healthy but still severely constipated. So yes, constipation can still occur by eating lots of fiber and very clean diet. Functional doc told me I was drinking too much water and flushing out my electrolytes as well so more water is not always the answer either!
This is the second time I've watched Dr. Weiss with Chef AJ and I think both shows were very good. The doctor seems really knowledgeable and wise, and I like his approach and manner, going into depths where needed, trying to consider all possible aspects. Thank you so much for another eminently watchable show which teaches a lot.
This was GREAT INFORMATION! Dr. Weiss you are a wonderful teacher. I will look forward to your future appearances. Thank you Chef AJ for what you do. I am appreciative.
I eat beans with my oats. Cooked Soya beans blended with banana and dates. To that I add cinnamon, ginger and some of the spices that Dr Greger recommends like tumeric and black pepper but those might be too much for most people. Beans is what keeps my hunger at bay.
Wow super interesting comment on constipation, no one else seems to be aware of! I eat a pretty high fiber plant based diet, but about 2 yr ago I had to go to the emergency room with some kind of painful intestinal blockage. Got CAT scanned, diagnosed with constipation. They proscribed cholase, and water.. but I couldn't just swallow a gel cap, because my stomach could not empty anything solid. So I chewed on the tablet, and enough of it got into my system to relieve the problem. What a relief! I started to increase my prune intake for a while, but the main thing I did was to drink a lot of water. I didn't need any more cholase. Whenever I got an uncomfortable feeling in the gut, I would drink a whole liter of water, and that would do the trick. After a year the gut problem went away and I'm back to normal, and don't need big amounts of water! I wondered if the problem might have been Covid related (?) Or, due to having eating a large amount of cooked wild mushrooms (chicken-of-the-woods) Soon after eating the mushrooms I would get stomach aches from eating some normally benign spice like turmeric... When ever I get an xray at a Doctors appointment, they always tell me I have constipation, even though I feel fine! They always say my intestine is totally stuffed., and recommend some stool softener...They don't have a clue about whole plant diets!

I went through the same difficult time of constipation for a couple of months, I eat whole food plant based with no oil. No matter what I did, my body would be normal. I bought fiber powder, since me eating fiber didn't work. I drank plenty of water. That didn't work either. I ate beans, oats, green leafy greens. I drank prune juice and ate prunes, I ate a lot of psyllium husk. I googled all fiber rich plant foods. I ate them all everyday. I even had to started doing enemas. I had terrible hemorrhoids. One day after two months of suffering everything just went the way it was supposed to. I can't explain why this happened in the first place, but I'm happy it's over. That was last year and the constipation never came back.
I'd love to see a discussion about loose/frequent bowel motions developing after a long time on a WFPB diet. No one is talking about it and it can be totally debilitating.
My relative tried eating my diet... wfpb sos... and suffered with too frequent visits to the toilet. I was with her for 3 weeks. She carried on afterwards convinced that this new diet was healthy and beneficial but the toilet situation didn't settled down. She went back to meat, bread, oil, vegetables and fruits plus bakery treats. Normal poos. So yes definitely need a conversation about this. Probably to do with the microbiome. I have a book to read ...FIBRE FUELLED.. maybe this book might have the answers.
This was so good! The constipation and bone health discussions were especially helpful. I feel like I am in the same situation as the woman who is still dealing with constipation, even with perfect plant based eating. I would love to hear more on load bearing exercise. I have been able to build bone density from weight bearing exercise, but don't love how I feel when getting more muscular. I think I am able to build muscle more easily but feel better when less bulky. I would like to hear more specifically about rebounding and if that would be sufficient.
Dr Weiss advise about protein, bone health and muscles is so important. For the first time I tried putting what I eat into cronometer and was surprised how little protein I was eating and calcium. The next day I made sure I increased and included more soya beans, red kidney beans and lentils. Plus fortified soya yoghurt and all the grains, veggies, fruits, herbs, spices, nuts and seeds and I got 90 grams which according to the app based on my activity level I need another 20 grams. (Don't misunderstand, I'm happy with this amount) I wasn't near that though so it's focused me to take care. I'm trying to gain muscle and lose fat. Currently 64 kgs. I hit the UK's calcium target of 700 but not the US target. Cronometer says 1200. Can't get close without a supplement and don't really want that. Any suggestions? Why the huge difference? Meanwhile I'm diagnosed osteoporosis at 56 and doing what I can down the gym.
