The Frist thing I do when I'm upset😓, is hear this song. I don't know why but it always manages to put a smile on my face. 😍😻 Edit: I'm so sad to hear this😭😭 Neil Innes such a inspiration person had to die today. He died age 75 on Sunday.
I've only heard the Saturday Night Live version twice years ago, and I don't remember it that well. But I remember that it was fantastic. If anyone has it, they should post it on here sometime. (I know SNL clips usually get taken down quickly, but you should try anyway.)
I first heard/saw this in "The Innes Book of Records" around 1980. It was in the same episode that featured "Chalk and Cheese" and only appeared in the rerun. It replaced the detestable song "Human Race" that appeared in the original version of the show.
Never heard this version before. I think the Rutles' version from "Archaeology" is more to my taste though. I like the way he used the bit from his "How sweet to be an Idiot" song at the beginning....well, not on this version but in the Rutles' version.
No - the episode was Eric Idle with musical guests Neil Innes and Alan Price. (There were several Eric episodes - Eric and Joe Cocker, Eric and Bob Dylan, Eric and Kate Bush.... possibly one other.)
This was on SNL? I never remember seeing this, but the episodes from back then I only watched as rebroadcasts that had been cut down to fit into only an hour. Perhaps they cut this wonderful song from it.
Quite a strangely serious song for the time...closing mines and closing industries, strikes, etc. Which I think what the satire of the song. I like the Rutles version, that's even more poignant...
Was that the Eric Idle episode that had George Harrison as the musical guest? That's the only Eric Idle episode from back then that I can remember offhand.
R.I.P Neil Innes 😢
a great artist
So sorry to hear about Neil Innes, I always liked the Innes Book of Records. I have episodes of the programme on audio tape.

Yep - this episode was in the same Eric Idle-hosted episode where Nasty sang "Cheese and Onions".
I liked that one too, joekalteich! I think it was the trousers... or the ears.

Oh and as the Rutles version points out - who ripped who for Postman Pat? LOL

No, Butlins.
No longer, I meant!
Great to see Butlins, reminded me of childhood photo I had taken of myself stood between the legs of the bearded man (Paul Bunyan) statue featured!?!
