- LEIDY Ardila from Neiva, Columbia suffers from fibrous dysplasia, an uncommon bone disorder where scar-like (fibrous) tissue develops in place of normal bone. The condition developed after Leidy had heart surgery when she was a baby. Doctors warned her mother that Leidy wouldn't be able to walk - and that it was likely she wouldn't survive past her 12th birthday. But Leidy more than proved them wrong. Aside from the surgeries and hospital visits Leidy has endured, it has left her face enlarged and it's perhaps this visible aspect of her condition that impacts Leidy the most. Now 29 and working as a graphic designer, Leidy is using social media to promote body positivity.

Past lives and karma perhaps could play a role. Its my own personal opinion that her soul chose this life on purpose to make up for past karma. I had no idea that excessive steroids given to a child could trigger such an unusual condition. It seems like it would be so physically painful. I pray God continues to bring good people into her life & she stays as healthy as possible.
Fibrous dysplasia is caused by a gene mutation. It is not triggered by steroids.
I think the steroids started it because it affected her pituitary gland and caused more calcium in the upper part of her body and that caused the bone deformity to start forming. I’m wondering if the gene mutation/disease was already in her body and it was essentially dormant before the steroids.
Researchers believe that the disorder is caused by a change (mutation) in a gene called GNAS1. This gene mutation occurs after fertilization of the embryo (somatic mutation) and is therefore not inherited, nor will affected individuals pass the mutation on to their children.

Fortunately new studies come out every few years. It also depends on the area and how many bones are affected that’ll help with treatments. I’m glad there are more and more videos about Fibrous Dysplasia because so many doctors and the average person don’t know about it. I had to explain to a new doctor what it was recently, since I have it in my pelvis.

Seriously, she is also very cute! Off course, she looked strange(not in a bad way!!) for me at first, because my brain is not used to see a person looking like this. But I think excactly that is the problem in society. People need to look past that, and be better to see the beauty in the people that are different, see the human! I had a friend during school that had a disability and we saw it as an opportunity to filter out the bad friends from the good. We then managed to get a group of friends where none of them have an ugly personality :^)

I don't get why people like you feel the need to lie, it doesn't help her by people telling her untruths. Some people are beautiful and some aren't. Actually most of us aren't beautiful, so what? That's why it's so great that different people value different things. Some people are smart, some are kind, some are athletic. So why not just be honest and say, she is very courage and kind hearted rather than feeling you need to make yourself seem virtuous by saying she is beautiful. I would have sued the crap out of that hospital if they did that to my daughter.
Unfortunately, it’s human instinct to stare when we see something our brains take time to process. When we see people who are different, it takes a while to comprehend and process what we’re seeing. Not excusing it, but it is what it is. I had a little brother with a huge cranial deformity and people would stare. It sucks, but when you realize you’re glancing too long at someone who is different, it’s time to look away. No one like to be stared at.

TBH When I see some one different in any way my heart skips a beat and I give like a two seconds glance out of uncontrollable curiosity and look away immediately cause even if they were normal people, it’s awkward and kinda rude to be staring at someone. I keep trying to hold my self to not look again. IDK about other people but different things attract me and makes me extremely curious. I still feel so sorry for them to feel like so many people stared at them or let’s say almost every stranger they pass by.
I remember the first time I saw a person with chopped off hands and one foot and I never knew back then that it was possible to live without some body parts. Lady too. I never knew that too much steroids can do that and never knew that having extra calcium makes your body build extra bones.
