  • Made this for a TC video contest.
    Sorry, no sounds. Just showing how to program and connect the two units together. The midi part doesn't have anything to do with your audio signal so you can plug everything anyway you want. Ex. Nova Drive going in front of the amp and Nova System in the FX loop. Or Nova Drive into Nova System into Amp input.
    Hope it's useful for all of you out there.
    Have fun.

    Excellent demo, very useful, makes using the Nova Drive into the front of the amp and Nova System in the effects send and return whilst syncing patch changes a breeze. Presumably there's nothing to stop you adding a Switch 3 into the setup plugged into the System along with a Boss TU-3 at the front end to give you a really powerful set up. I bought a Nova System last month for my Blackstar HT5R and HRD, sounds fantastic and just got a Nova Drive tonight on Ebay can't wait to start building patches with both.

    Very good walkthru. Id love to buy the Nova System but always feel that im not good enuff to use such advanced device. But then again hands are itching. At the moment im just using Jemini as my main Dist/OD, and Korg AX3000G as my time based and expression effects. Still deciding what to get as my dist/OD booster... but well very good video. If i decide to get a Nova System, this would be a very good tutorial video to begin. Thanks!

    I would say yes, I sold the NDr a while ago and now I just use the NSy as a portable, small pedalboard. I also have a big pedalboard so I don't miss the NDr too much. So the NSy is enough.
    That being said, there's definitely some advantages when you use the NS and the ND together; which basically is that you can have od and dist at the same time (both off, both on, or one on and one off), and also that you can run the ND in front of your amp and the NS in the FX loop for all your other effects.

  • @psebastianmusic
    @psebastianmusic  13 років тому

    @knikk77 I kinda thought the same thing when I bought it. But after playing around with it I found a few advantages.
    1. With only the NS you either use it in front of the amp and use the drive section, or you use it in the effects loop and you don't use the drive section. When you have the ND you can use it in front of the amp and the NS in the effects loop.
    2. You don't get all the stacking/parallel option with just the NS drive section.
    3. Separate foot-switches for overdrive and Distortion.

  • @psebastianmusic

    @edenskey I usually go Guitar--> Nova Drive In--> Nova System LINE In-->Amp Input
    But there are other ways to do it, like:
    Guitar--> Nova drive In--> Amp In, and the Nova System in the effects loop.
    I think those two are the more logical if you are using the Nova Drive or any kind of distortion (outside the Nova System). Just remember that you don't want any /distortion/fuzz/overdrive in the effects loop of your amp.

    The Nova Drive is actually the drive section from a Nova System, why do you need both? Nova Drive is a GREAT pedal!

  • @megamania501
    @megamania501 11 років тому

    I'll be trying the same thing when I get my Nova drive tomorrow or friday. From what I've researched so far, I think that it will work but the nova will only follow the 12 scenes on the M13 which i think I can work with. Scene 1 will turn on preset 1 on the Nova, scene 2 will turn on preset 2 and so on. This vid makes me optimistic that it will work that way.

  • @psebastianmusic
    @psebastianmusic  13 років тому

    @digitrixster Yes, but not all midi controllers have the capability of sending different commands to two or more MIDI channels (for instance the MIDI moose by tech 21; you can choose between 16 channels but you can only use one at a time) that means that if you want the NS in preset 1 the ND will be on preset 1 too and that's not always smart... That's why the midi mapping is really useful.

    Timur Iskhodzhanov I'm not sure what do you mean with 4CM. Usually 4CM refers to having the preamp section of your amp working in within a loop of a Multi FX unit. Something that you might want to do with, for example, amp modelers like the line 6 POD X3 Live or the Boss GT 10.
    With the ND+NS you don't have a loop to do that, so technically you can't use the 4CM. HOWEVER I think you are referring not to the 4CM but to using the ND in front of the amp for distortions and the NS in the FX Loop for modulations, delays, etc. This set up also uses four cables but is a different thing than the 4CM.
    If I'm correct and what you want is to run ND in front and NS in the FX loop, then simply connect your guitar to the ND and then to the input of your amp. Then FX send of your amp to Line in on NS and Out of the NS to the FX Return of the Amp. The benefit of doing this is that you'll have all your delays and reverbs after your amps preamp section.

  • @psebastianmusic
    @psebastianmusic  13 років тому

    @loborneta Yeah sure, you would have to connect the midi out of the midi mate into the midi in of the Nova S. and from the midi out of the Nova S into the midi in of the Nova D, then make sure they are all working on the same MIDI channel. Also turn the "PrgChg. In" in the Nova S. to "On" and configure the "MidiMap In" if you want to, and then configure the "PrgChg. Out" and the "MidiMap Out" just like I showed in the video.
    Let me know if you have any questions.

    @svyatagor It works... That's all I can really say. Depending on your FX loop (parallel, series), amp, guitar, settings, etc. you might have different results. I wouldn't expect a Digitech Whammy identical sound with the Nova System, it's a whammy and it does it's job, not amazing not horrible. Like everything, you'll have to tweak a lot, but again, it works.

  • @psebastianmusic
    @psebastianmusic  13 років тому

    @edenskey I'm not sure what you mean by fast. Maybe you've read (or experienced if you own the Nova System) about a "drag" when you press the foot-switches. But this is a misunderstanding; the presets don't change when you PRESS a foot-switch they change when you RELEASE (after you press it). It's a little weird and it takes a little while to get use to that... but it's not that bad.
    Not sure if that's what you meant... if not feel free to ask again.
    Cheers.

    I did the same but before of this video, my nova drive have a great problem: got a Nova Drive to test drive last week. Saturday it was fine. Tuesday night, dead. All lights working, bypass mode is fine but as soon as I engage distortion OR overdrive, signal drops out completely. I also get little "clicking" noises when I rotate the presets dial. Took it back and got another one today.

    @psebastianmusic Thanks for your reply! I have used the Whammy of the NS before the preamp, and it sounds pretty good. However the NS in general sounds better in the loop, especially reverbs and delays. Unfortunately, my amp (Bogner Alchemist) has a parallel fx loop that gives some phasing, and even when set to 100% wet, the original dry signal bleeds through. So I'm going to have it modified to have a serial loop, should work fine. Thanks again!

  • @queensryche230

    Doing this can the drive go in front of the amp and the Nova system in effects loop. More importantly, can you run both thru a mini switcher so the drive still changes while midi switcher controls the system

  • @digitrixster
    @digitrixster 13 років тому

    @psebastianmusic It would be simpler to have the master MIDI controller change presets on both units. Just connect MIDI Out from the controller to MIDI In on the Nova System. Then plug MIDI Thru from the Nova System to MIDI In on the Nova Drive. No complicated midi mapping. :)

  • @megamania501
    @megamania501 11 років тому

    Yes, it works. But since the Nova only has 18 presets thats as far it goes in conjunction with the scenes. It will follow folder 1 with the first 12 scenes, then it will follow the first 6 scenes in folder 2. The remaining scenes in the folder or folders 3 or 4 don't do anything to the Nova drive. 18 is good enough for me :)

    Hi Sebastian, nice vid thanks a lot!
    does adding a Nova drive to a Nova System by midi allows to connect the whole thing with a four cables method? I mean Nova System in the amp effects loop and nova drive in front of the amp?
    Thanks !

    • @psebastianmusic
      @psebastianmusic  9 років тому

      Poule Paul Glad you liked it. As I mentioned someone else, usually when people talk about the 4CM they are talking about using the loop snd/rtn of some multiFX. Neither the ND nor the NS have a loop. But technically yes, you can use the 4CM in the following way:
      Connect your guitar to the ND and then to the input of your amp. Then FX
      send of your amp to Line in on NS and Out of the NS to the FX Return of
      the Amp. The benefit of doing this is that you'll have all your delays
      and reverbs after your amps preamp section. That means Guitar>Amp Distortion (Preamp)>Nova System (only for FX)>Power amp.

    It was an Ernie Ball Jr Vol pedal, but I would not use that one... If I were you I would go to a store a try a couple different ones with the NS, hook them up and calibrate them one by one and then see which one does a better job. The Ernie Ball did the job but the sweep was a little uneven and it made things like pitch effects (whammy) a little weird sounding.

    So I do praise and worship at my church and still learning lead guitar and I have been looking at the nova system for awhile. Now I do have questions and hope you can answer them..... So do you not like the overdrive on the nova system and that's why you got the pedal? And what's the difference between this and line 6 cause I feel like line 6 can be either really good or it can be crap.

    • @psebastianmusic
      @psebastianmusic  10 років тому

      The reason I got both wasn't because one distortion was particularly better than the other (although of course the nova drive has more options like using both the OD and Dist at the same time). The reason I got both is that you can have more connectivity options and it's easier to combine with other pedals.
      As for the Line 6 it's always a matter of opinion. I tend to like TC electronic stuff better than Line 6, I feel that the manufacture and sound quality are superior. However Line 6 stuff is not bad and it usually will give you more options (effects, amps, etc) in one piece of gear than TC. It also depends on the use; remember Line 6 comes in two types; amp modelers ( like the PODs) and stompbox effects (like the M9). If you plan to record directly to an interface go with Line 6's amp modelers. If you want to play live or mic your amp at the studio go with L6 Stompboxes or TC stuff. However some people use the amp modelers with their amps and it works for them so... best thing is to try it out yourself and see what works.

    great vid!
    Is it posible to have the exact same setup but use an extra MIDI controler to control NS and ND in the same time.
    for ex. : midimate changes presets on the NS, and in the same time NS changes presets on the ND? If thats posible does that mean that you have the REVERB COMP and DRIVE buttons on the NS free to press without changing the presets?

  • @psebastianmusic
    @psebastianmusic  13 років тому

  • @psebastianmusic
    @psebastianmusic  12 років тому

    Two options for what you want:
    1. Suhr Riot into Nova System and NS into the front of the amp.
    2. Suhr Riot in front of the amp and Nova System in the FX loop.
    In both cases remember to bypass the drive section of the NS.
    I've used both ways and each have its pros and cons: For example, you don't want to have your comp in the FX loop, so if you use the NS in the loop you can't use your comp (you CAN but it doesn't sound good).
    You just have to try both and see what works best for you.
    Cheers!

  • @psebastianmusic
    @psebastianmusic  11 років тому

    Yes, remember MIDI is basically digital information, so no sound is being transmitted, the reason I didn't have any patch cables in the video was that I was only showing you how to program the whole thing. This setup has one advantage which is that you can have your ND going into the NS and then the input of the amp (Gtr>ND in, ND Out>NS in, NS out>Amp in), or you can have the ND in the input of the amp and then the NS in the FX loop (Gtr>ND in, ND out>Amp in, Amp Send>NS in, NS out>Amp Return).

    • @psebastianmusic

      Remember that in addition to the MIDI connections you also need to have the audio cables connected. Here I am only showing you how to connect and set up the MIDI stuff - you can think of it as "information" (banks, presets, etc). But MIDI doesn't actually transmit any sound.
      So, IN ADDITION to the MIDI connection showed here, you also need to plug in audio cables. For this you have two options:
      1. Guitar - ND - NS: Everything in front of the amp. This is probably the simplest way. You need three cables.
      - Guitar >> Nova Drive In; Nova Drive Out >> Nova System In; Nova System Out(L) >> Amp;
      2. Guitar - ND - Amp, NS in loop: This is only possible if your amp has an FX loop. This allows you to use the drive in front of the amp and all the Nova System effects after the amp. You will need four cables.
      - Guitar >> Nova Drive In; Nova Drive Out >> Amp In;
      - Amp FX send >> Nova System In; Nova System Out >> Amp FX return

    Well, I think they're not really built for that. You can use the EQ to change the contour of the NS's or ND drive and get a more High Gain sounding preset. But you can't really get a full gain, focused distortion that's usually found in metal.

      No, neither unit (or if you are using both) has delays when changing patches, however, for some reason the Nova System changes patch when you release the footswitch instead of when you step on it. Many people don't like this. I don't know if they've fixed this in more recent versions.

      I had this rig such a long time ago that I can't remember, sorry. I know that both drives have an analog system that is controlled digitally, whether or not the circuit is the same I cannot say. That being said, I remember they were comparable. Even if they do have different circuits the difference is not crazy. The only big difference between the NS and the ND is that in the ND you could have overdrive, distortion or both at the same time (either in series - od into dist or vice versa- or in parallel), as opposed to the NS where you can only have the overdrive or the distortion but not both. This means that the ND gives you three more drive sounds.
