Im 65 now and retired. Played across Canada fulltime in the 80's so you know what sounds I've liked. I have a soft spot for Vintage/outdated gear. A Marshall jmp1 pre amp was my latest buy for 400 dollars. How bout a Jackson jx3 tubed pre amp i found in town for 200 dollars. A Digitech 2112 tubed guitar processor for 200. Digitech trs6 multi processor for 60 dollars, was 800 new. A BBE sonic maximizer for 60 dollars. All rack mounted. Sure they dont have the newer sounds like my Hughes and Kettner grandmiester 40 deluxe but when i sit and noodle all of it makes me smile. Maybe because its from a different era. Great video, keep em coming. Dave from Canada!

Last year I picked up an old GT-6B from a guy on craigslist for $50. I didn't expect to use it a lot and just wanted it as a backup in case my pedalboard craps out on me for whatever reason, but it ended up replacing my entire rig. The preamp section has an awesome Ampeg SVT mode that sounds kind of like a sansamp bass driver, and a really great 8x10" cab sim. There's other speaker size options but that's the only one I ever use. The compressor is pretty nice, nothing special but it gets the job done well enough for me. The real game-changer though is the ability to blend any boss OD/distortion/fuzz pedal with your clean signal. Normally I use a line selector pedal with a DS-1, so that's what I have mine set to. And as far as modulation goes, it has just about everything I would want to use on a bass and then some. It also has a noise gate, and it lets you change the order of effects just like you would with a pedalboard. It's one of the best pieces of gear I've ever bought. I don't use an amp or cab or pedals in my band anymore, just the GT-6B straight into a PA. It has separate left and right xlr outputs, so you can use 2 speakers for stereo effects, or run one to the FOH speakers and one to your floor monitor

🎸I've been using my NOVA for 15 years (since it came out) and it's still on my main pedalboard. It is a great system and and one of the only systems that can do spillover delays with TC's incredible sounding delays better than most newer systems made today. It has just what I need and no more. Great sounding chorus and phenomenal reverbs and modulation effects. No silly amp modeling or extra nonsense and I don't use harmonizers. BTW, the analog overdrive is still, to this day, one of the best I've ever used and the expression pedal feature is a must. Even though it's not a 4 cable (I use it in front of my amp) I will never sell my unit as it has become part of my Guitar DNA. My entire board consists of the NOVA, a Poly Tune 3, Digitech Ventura Vibe, an expression pedal and an effect called a Slo Engine which is a volume swell pedal. For switching my amp channels (as you did) I use a Midi Mouse from Tech 21 and that's the whole thing. Thanks for the great review on this classic.

I've been moving from an all-in-one multi-fx station to individual pedals and I recently picked up a used TC Nova Repeater for 60€. I've been buying a bunch of the old late 80's and early 90's Rack Gear and basically all the stuff that was out of reach to a teenage Joey.
Constantly reaching for that "sound" or "tone" that is mostly available in a few of my newer amps and effects units, but never getting quite what I'm nostalgicaly remembering.
I bought a Line 6 Pocket Pod and the FBV MKII Shortboard (had to buy them both for the deal) for $50 at a garage sale a few months back. The kidney bean has as many effects and capabilities as most of the rack stuff I piss money away on!

I’d love to see more useful old gear! I’d also love to see comparisons to any newer models out there, such as the black TC Electronic Nova you referenced - it would be helpful to compare so we can decide what’s best for our needs and whether it makes sense to buy a much older 14 year old unit vs. anything newer the company has made that’s similar. When you make content like this in the future for pedals or any other gear, I hope you’ll do that rather than simply mentioning that there’s a newer model so we can compared all the features. Bought a supposedly new Nova a number of years from a reputable dealer. It’s was brilliant especially for gigs but then it just froze, wouldn’t respond to any inputs. The shop I bought it from eventually agreed to get it repaired under warranty. To cut a long story short when I got it back I discovered it had been fixed before after suffering the same problem and I had been in fact been sold a secondhand repaired unit and not a brand new one. Got my money back. I’ve come across a number of secondhand ones for sale recently and was seriously tempted to buy another one but didn’t because I was concerned it would stop working just like my original one. I’ve researched this problem on the internet and apparently other users have experienced the same problem in relation to their Nova’s freezing.

Older digital units like this were always great for their modulation and time based effects. Even old Zoom pedals were great for this, and their drive emulation is often made better by playing through a cab or an IR, as the built in cab emulation on older units was... ugh *shudders* terrible. I remember my dad gave me his old Zoom 505II (the silver hardware revision version) as a hand-me-down and my next door neighbor's dad had the fabled red bean, and while both sounded great if you ran it into the FX return of say, a Fender or Guitar Research combo, or an old Peavey Bandit 112, if you used the cab sims run into a PA or a hi-fi stereo system, it was god awful. My newer G1XOn even has useable TS808, MT-2, or Distortion+ emulation, depending on where it goes in your chain.
Then again, my newer Zoom actually has useable cab sims on it, though I still prefer IR's or a real cab.

He uses it for it's shitty pitch shift FX and things like delay, reverb, echo, auto-wah, wah, volume pedal, etc., in the FX loop of his Bugera V22 combo for stuff like acid jazz. Even back then, the noise gate and noise reduction features on my old 505II were better than 90% of name brand individual stomp boxes, and today it's probably still in the top 70%, and on newer Zoom pedals it's just gotten better.

@@needsLITHIUM Yeah, the noise gate on them is like really really good. I just hit the button that automatically adjust it and boom, works like a charm. The pitch shifter is actually one of secret weapons. Most modern pitch shifting effects are super accurate and can hold chords no problem. Old effects tho had absolutely awful tracking , especially when working with chords or multiple notes. It tries to figure out what note your playing and it makes this sort of unstable warble effect, like the instrument is constantly moving in and out of tune.

I never really had a problem with the tuner when playing in standard tuning, BUT this thing took drive pedals TERRIBLY. Fuzzes in particular sound awful when plugged into it. I don't get why. I would love to use this just for effects and put a distortion or fuzz before it, but man it's just horrible. If you're only using your amp's distortion though, plus the built in boost or OD, then it's all good.

I was waiting and searching for this. So - here's the trick. The drive is MEH - but the boost is a great way to bump for solos. What to do? Using the Line input - run this baby through your effects loop, as you would any delay/reverb/modulation pedal. Then add your overdirve/distortion into the front from your guitar. In my case this is the Diezel VH4. I run into a SOLID STATE Roland JC (I know I know - I am not using the amps Chorus or Reverb) and HOLY MOTHER does it sounds wonderful. Something not mentioned here is how quiet this unit is. Even with Boost kicked in - I find it dead black between notes. The closest comparision I can make to my tone now is Allan Holsdworth - no VH4 for the rythmn stuff, and then kicking that in (not full gain) for the solos. I bought this unit for 140 on Reverb. Best buy ever. It just works for me. Although, sadly, I still cannot play like Allan Holdsworth.

Had one for a couple of years but, essentially a Katana does the same job with a huge bunch of additional options, like all the Boss pedals, plus you get an amp and speaker. The distortion and drive were meh and you only have one of each. The delay and reverb were decent. Modulation you could only have one at a time, so no chorus + tremelo. The Boost switch was the best of it. Very useful for switching from rhythm to lead. It was ok at the time, but now there are way better things for the same money as a 2nd hand Nova. A NUX MG-30 stomps all over it sonically. The Nova however was built like a tank so very roadworthy. If you only need delay and reverb and possibly a boost, can find one cheap (circa £50) and have your own drive pedals, it could be useful. But a Boss ME 70 gives you more for your money on the second hand market.

Use mine for midi channel switching at home mostly and adding an effect or two on said channel, only in the loop, the compressor and delay aren't too shabby (yes I use compressors in the fx loop and in front lol), and those two effects alone are worth the money, really good useful gear for the price, especially before going out and forking out dough for separate pedals, it allows to see which effects you do actually like and use and familiarize yourself with them beforehand.
Mine did freeze every now and then, opened it up and put stick on ram heatsinks on the chips where they would fit, solved my problem, there's something that overheats in there on hot summer days or under stage lights.
In front it doesn't like other pedals very much, for fx loop usage it's great, the analog overdrive is anecdotic in my opinion.

I wonder how it would sound direct, with some IR's from Two Notes Wall Of Sound for example.
I tried it with my POD HD500x a few years ago and it was a great improvement.

I believe that yeah, its great and it's impressive that after 14 years It van keep up with modern options but, there are modern options like mooer or Nux (specifically the nux mg 300)
That are better, allow stacking fx and can allow you to install your own impulse responses, maybe the build quality wouldn't be as good but I would think that is a fair tradeoff for the added features and sound quality

Had a nova for 5 years and I’m getting fed up never white getting exactly what I want from the delay. I feel like I’m forever tweaking one of its thousand controls 😂. Love the gate it’s amazing. The reverb I found easy to set. Phaser I just can’t get the van halen sound even looking for online settings. Think I’ll keep it and get a tc flashback 2 for the delay for the hair metal sound.

The only gear going up in price is nonsense magic unicorn crap like Klons or fools trying to sell $1100 American strats for $1250 (a failing strategy, BTW - go on Reverb and see the significant price drops). There's a TON of great used gear out there at reasonable prices.

Speaking of outdated gear I still use my Line 6 Uber Metal pedal. They should have named it the Clown show. The Pulverize and Insane settings are hilarious. It's an all out assault against subtlety and good taste. There's even a noise gate for noise free maximuml Br00tlz.

Awesome unit. Tho I prefer the sounds I get from my M9, despite its complete lack of build quality (at least as far as knows and switches go). I always kind of wished that the M9 sounds were in the Nova enclosure

Maybe it's due to YT compression, but the modulation FX dont sound that good. For that i got me a Marshall RG, it cost me 50€ and does all the common modulation stuff plus a very quirky step phaser. I think the nova might be a good start for beginners to find out which FX they want to play with before buying expensive pedals. Great vid!

It's good to see a video of "Outdated' gear. There are a lot of great old pieces that, like you said, may not be in high demand, but still good.
If you want to talk about 'Outdated', I'm still using my A/DA MP1's from the nineties. It's my secret weapon, and the best tone I ever had. I LOVE that thing. I keep telling people these things are great, AND I try and snap up as many as I can before someone famous uses one again and they go through the roof. Prices fluctuate a lot on these month to month.

That also happens with old keyboards. Take Kurzweil for example, the good old K2000 from 1992 has a very unique sound that's very good to today's standards. And you can get them for about 400€!
