Can't believe its been 11 years since this gorgeous album was released. It's still amazing. I'm not from England but I honestly get something universal and extremely humane from the themes on this record.

England is in its death throes, a living breathing corpse of a country. On life support, which is slowly being withdrawn by legal, illegal and economic migration.

This song perfectly describes what England is to me. The lyrics, the images: everything resonates. I remember driving through the Yorkshire moors listening to this song. I miss you, England. 'You leave a taste, a bitter one'

There are a good number of people who discovered Said Axayê Cizîrê through this beautiful song, apparently. I guess I am one of the few people who had the experience the other way around :) I am an old fan of PJ Harvey, though to be honest I haven't been listening to her in a long while. Revisiting her music through Qasimê Meyro was pure coincidence, for which I am very glad, and lucky. Beautiful as always.

I live and die through England
    Through England
    It leaves a sadness
Remedies never were within my reach
I cannot go on as I am
Withered vine reaching from the country
    That I love
    England
    You leave a taste
    A bitter one
I have searched for your springs
But people, they stagnate with time
    Like water, like air
    To you, England, I cling
Undaunted, never failing love for you
    England

the fact that this only has 188k views says it all.....while everyone is listening to garbage (literal garbage) artists, true artists like pj harvey truck along, what a blessing that i found her in the 90's during her tour with U2......i totally fell in love with her music then and have followed her ever since, may the universe always bless pj harvey with light and love and happiness, xo

The pair of identical twins are the Okonkwo brothers, Chet and Joe, eccentric characters from Islington, well known for their snappy dress sense and quirky philosophy. In the mid/late 1980s they ran their own street club outside Highbury and Islington tube station before and after school/work. People would congregate, gossip and find out where all the cool house parties were that weekend.

Wow. Seamus Murphy is amazing. I love the opening scene w/ the young lady reciting the opening lines. Almost as if she just started reciting until she read the line "I can't go on as I am." Which suddenly hits her. That look on her face reflecting a profound sadness. Beautiful, beautiful moment.

if a true greatest hits album of Polly Jean's work, it would have to be a complete discography box set.
it has been a refreshing joy to experience her breadth of work from the beginning to present.

A lesson in how to make something so emotive sound so beautiful - on many levels. The whole album is lovely to work to - and transports my mind elsewhere, away from the mundane and banal office environment. This particular song - with its perfect juxtaposition of subject and sounds, always rouses my emotions. Thank-you so, Polly, Mick, John, et al.

perfect. i left england 5 years ago. when i hear this song it resonates. i got tired of the war against the poor. the fascist mentality of people. i miss you england. we need to wake up and rise against the ruling class. the class system is very much in place and very present. its sad as it not about the foreigners, its not about the "other" people, generally English people have an acceptance of everyone. that's what makes us special. i think this song (to me) is talking about, and how shit houses like the bbc and the sun has ruined. remember who you are. the good, honest and human england i miss.
we must remember as people.. thats who we are... were not apart of war.. we just trying to eat and get by... that is all... i love you england..
