    How wonderful the pursuit and application of knowledge, combined with musicianship and practical skill. Both Callum, Julian and Barnaby (and many more equally dedicated) are doing great work on our behalf as pipers and musicians, exploring the world of reed and instrument making, their historical origins, their sound and so much more. They are outstanding musicians and teachers themselves. All this is hugely inspiring. We are blessed. It shows that, as musicians we are constantly striving for perfection and application, a constant need to get there and touch God, the privilege of all dedicated pipers.

    I was linked to this when looking for a video demonstration of the instrument played by tibicines to accompany Roman comedy, the better to interpret descriptions of the tibicen in the last part of Stichus; and this did not disappoint! I'm quite grateful for people like you who put the work into reconstructions like this.

      There was actually Elios of Frestylon, a young Achean returning from asia minor with poems about precious sea-hued sandals, performing them whilst playing the Aulos in a way that impressed the crowds of lower born noble women as if Dionysos himself stood gyrating before them, and upset the ruling class males.

    This instrument was most likley the distorted "electric guitar" of its day and its tone is not far different. I'm sure it was used for virtuoso showing off to big audiences because its loud and louder still in the proper venue, more than one and you have a rock concert. It can also play intervals and more than one could produce chords.
    Plato objects to the music of his day being too far out, so we should take it to mean that music of the day was more far out than what Plato prescribes.
    This instrument probably had a varied reputation just as the saxophone or guitar might now, sometimes proper, sometimes not. It was probably sometimes suspect to be an aulos player, Ill bet some assumed you must be "wild", a "rock" star.

    I found this video because I just read that the Aulos was created by Athena after hearing the mourning lament of Medusa's sisters after hearing about her death. I wanted to hear what sound it would create and I think it definitely has a looming lament sound.

  • @michaelinglis8516
    @michaelinglis8516 2 роки тому +2

    Ok bear with me I'm just throwing out an idea here. I'm a musician so I understand the need for an ergonomic instrument. But back then maybe they were thinking about the practicality a little different. If you swap each pipe around you would have sound holes that curve towards each other and right into your line of sight. Another theory which is likely, er.... less likely, is that the side at which you place the reed could be interchangable. The purpose of this could be so that your hands are separated one forward and one back. But this would have serious implications on the fundamentals/note that the pipe could produce which is why this is less likely. But I'm only a musician not a scholar who's dedicated my life to this but none the less I couldn't help but theorize.

    The goddess Athena created the Aulos, but she casted it down from Olympus because the other gods laughed at the faces she pulled when playing it. As far as I'm aware Dionysus had nothing to do with the Aulos

    • @Alizudo
      @Alizudo 5 років тому +4

      The guy who found the Aulos after Athena threw it away was a Satyr.
      Dionysus is the God of Wine and Satyrs. So he's not directly connected, but in a way he does have an influence.

      iirc Dionysus is seen playing the aulos in some ancient greek art. It's also seen as a sort of party instrument, an instrument of fun and even of madness, which Dionysus is also known for.

    • @meltedsandwich6716
      @meltedsandwich6716 3 роки тому

      Dionysus was the patron of satyrs who took up the instrument for their dancing and probably offered one to their patron as a tithe and he then started to be seen playing it as the god of partying I doubt he would care about the gods laughing at him as he would like the merrier atmosphere no matter the cause he would then show it to his followers below Olympus gifting them with music through the satyrs and his visits to the realm the origin story of the instrument doesn’t end in most cultures with its being created most items are given elaborated tales that talk about the importance of it in their lives usually as a tale for children who don’t want to hear a boring story for long idk if my theory is what could have been told but it’s my best guess at how a story would have been spun over the campfire during a festival or just a different event

    Launeddas, triple pipes made entirely out of reeds - invented before the bronze age, still played in Sardinia. Check out Luigi Lai, to have an idea of how an ancient master might have played the Aulos, not disrespecting Barnaby Brown performance!

    • @brendanlewis3770
      @brendanlewis3770 Рік тому

      Exactly - the launeddas is a living tradition from ancient times, whereas we have no idea really of how the aulos was played in various settings. Obviously its has a huge sacred sound that is well suited to slower metre, but what about all the rest - we cant ever know, but living traditions can give us a hint.

  • @daniellogan-scott5968
    @daniellogan-scott5968 5 років тому

    I wondered if the inventor of the aulos, Athena, would consider it to be sacred as her creation despite her having thrown it away and cursed it. In listening to the amount of wisdom required to make this work again, no doubt the goddess would be proud of this achievement.

    • @PaulTheSkeptic
      @PaulTheSkeptic 5 років тому

      Well, I play some kinds of flutes which are different but similar. If you're playing one flute, (Or pipes in this case. Aulos I guess) you want all the holes because you have two hands and more fingers. If you're playing two, you can only use 4 finger at most per flute. Therefore you need to plug some of them up, unless you have a flute built for playing both. A double flute. That's how you get that beautiful harmony. If you didn't plug any holes, you'd only be able to play the same note on both flutes and that won't sound good.

    The Louvre aulos are Egyptian, though, not Greek. And while the Louvre aulos certainly have Greek roots, the music brought from Greece would have adapted to local Egyptian tastes, especially in terms of pitch and scale. When looking at Greek art, aulos are almost always depicted as significantly longer than the Louvre aulos, which would naturally affect the sound.
