- It’s an unwelcome sight for some holiday bakers across the nation this Thanksgiving: barren grocery store shelves in the egg cooler - and where they’re available, prices on the rise.
While egg shortages have been localized in the days leading up to Thanksgiving, the average price for a dozen eggs in U.S. cities in October was $3.37. That’s down from when egg prices peaked at nearly five dollars in January of 2023. But, still up 63% from October of 2022, when a dozen eggs cost an average of $2.07.
Pushing egg supply down and egg prices up: bird flu, which has resulted in the culling of more than 100 million birds, most of them egg laying chickens. The outbreak of avian influenza, made worse by climate change, combined with laws in some U.S. markets requiring cage-free conditions for chickens has created serious issues for farmers, suppliers, stores and consumers.
