Good idea. Another idea, you can get a 100 count box of individually sealed alcohol wipes for a little over a dollar. Make very good fire starters along with 1st aid.
One of my favorite fire starters. When dipping the roll in wax I like to add a string, and then fill in interior with dryer lint. Build the fire around the device and then light the string--it's incredibly reliable.
I have used paper towel and toilet paper rolls for starting my flower and gardening seeds for a long time. You just plant them right into the soil. I also take my used dryer sheets and lint and stuff them inside the toilet paper roll. Then i dip each end in my used up wax in my wax burner. I save some up for fire starters when camping or bon fires. I like your idea also. Very compact.
Mix sawdust with the wax until it's the consistency of play-dough, then stuff the mixture into the toilet paper roll, and you'll have mini fuel logs that burn for hours.
Thank you sir for another wonderful video that is very practical I have watched you a few times I also watch corporals corner I watch hours and hours of bushcrafters all over the world thanks for your time and effort I am 63 and I'm on a fixed income. Until then like I always say be safe leave no Trace I'm with you in spirit your friend Arizona Dave
I’ve actually been keeping my waxed butter paper, cough drop paper anything that has wax on it I keep for emergency fire starting. But I will actually start doing this. Thanks for the wisdom. HE said, MY people parish for the lack of knowledge.ijs
I put dryer lint in them, then drizzle melted bit’s of candle wax (that are no longer useful for candles) over them for fire starters. Never throw away broken candles or what wax you have left in the bottom of a jar candle! Works great for fire starters! Can put bits of string and such in the egg holding portion of egg cartons and drizzle with melted wax. Break off an egg portion to use as a fire-starter whenever you need one. Great for taking camping! You can also use the cotton from pill bottle inserts. ‘Make do or do without!’
living in a world that doesnt see the joy in recycling all our stuff!thats why i love the punk traveler movement in the uk we always used everything about us that was thrown in skips for art, music(i would make drums out of big oil tins),survival when the supermarkets threw away so much food we would make sure it got used ,bless ya james your a star in welsh= seren!
James, I make fire starters using the wax and 100% cotton rounds. I use an old secondhand frypan and soak the rounds in the wax, using a spatula, put the saturated rounds on aluminum foil to cool and dry. Then store them in a baggie. They work for starting campfires and a fire in your woodstove. Thanks for the tip on using the rolls, and I'm thinking cut the rolls that come with paper towels and that should also work.
I think that is a fantastic idea. I might want to wrap it in plastic wrap real tight. So it doesn't wind up melting or sticking to things inside wallet. I also have a very small fishing kit my wallet as well. Three small hooks and some braided spider line. Which may be a brand name I can't remember. But it holds up virtually indefinitely versus a standard single strand fishing line. It doesn't get brittle. The stick and Bobber and other stuff you'll have to figure out while you're in the woods, it's not hard. Pine cones float. Worms are everywhere. And of course the stick..lol Of course if you can find a wicked witch, I remember hearing in a movie, that they also float... Just another alternative..lol
I save all the paper/cardboard for lighting the charcoal chimney. Toilet paper rolls get one side bent to close off, put catnip in, then close the other side---Cat toy!
This works with just about any cardboard. I've done it with cereal boxes and paper pulp egg cartons. Corrugated cardboard can be used also. Really great idea. Thanks for sharing. I keep a slab of wax on hand. It's amazing what all you can do with it.
That is a great way to create a cheap useful barter item!! Thank you sir. I've probably got half a dozen of those empty roll tubes on a shelf in my bathroom just sitting there. Paper towel tubes can also be used. Just cut to length. What I do not have is any Gulf Wax. I just ordered some on Amazon and it will be here tomorrow. I can barter them for other prepper items once I've made my own supply Thanks again for the great repurposing of something that would normally be out into the bin.
Thank you 👍. I believe that age old question of “Does a bear crap in the woods?” has been answered! You didn’t notice because your back was turned, but that roll of toilet paper you threw behind you was quickly snatched up by a bear. He grabbed the TP, pumped his paw as if to say YES!!!!. Then scurried back into the woods! 😉
Paul your story reminded me of the little rabbit that had stop next to a bush and was relieving himself when a huge bear appeared and set down next to him. His little rabbit knees were knocking together in extreme fear when the bear looked over at him and said, “have you ever had trouble with doo doo sticking to your fur?” The rabbit shaking like a leaf said, “no sir”, so the bear picked him up and wiped his butt with him. 🐻
Just buy yourself a bag of Fritos. They're cheap, you get plenty of them, and they are just as flammable as your toilet roll. Plus you can eat them when you get hungry, and you could use it to bait small traps.
it is a grand idea, I actually have been doing similar and is great to see someone like yourself promoting this via your youtube site for others. keep up the great work.
Way cool. 50 year hobo here. Another little trick for a roll of T P is to remove the cardboard tube carefully from the paper roll and stuff it in an empty coffee can. Then pour a small bottle of rubbing alcohol into the can. Light it for a smokeless warming source. You can put a bent up metal clothes hanger on top and heat a small tin can of water to instant coffee hot. If you not in a hurry it will warm a can of soup good enough. I never dilute canned soup as most of them are almost just dishwater if you do.
Great idea. I use tp cores and paper towel cores stuffed with shipping and newspaper for assisting in getting the wood stove going. I have also used dryer lint.
I take the tp cores and stuff one inside the other as tightly as I can before soaking it in candle wax. I've used one to start a fire in a heavy rain. It will burn for 15-20 minutes.
Those BUTANE COOKERS ARE THE BEST. I keep one in my car for a picnic or coffee break on trips. I added a hotplate & made a barbie that has been used on trips & picnics.
this is one hot Idea James. I guess it goes without saying this could be adapted with paper towel rolls, paper, Egg cartons , paper fire 🪵 logs and so forth. Take CaRe
Thanks for the great videos, it's nice to see someone using the same things I have been using for years I started to make them when at school in the 80s. Keep the videos coming it's great to see someone showing skills and tips, not just camping.
I do something similar, I fill the toile roll with dryer lint packed tight, also soak in paraffin wax, it can then be sliced after cooling and used as fire starters"…haven’t tried it yet but was thinking of running a candle wick through the center before putting in the hot wax, my thoughts are as a long candle or slice the tube for short candles….
I used the wax to seal the lint in, but I keep a bunch of tp tubes/lint in a big ziplock in my bugout bag (and a rolled up birch bark). The grandkids, ages 4 and 6, both can start fires with the lint and a Ferro rod.
Doubt it would work as a candle as the whole thing is essentially a wick at that point. All the compacted lint and cardboard tube would begin to catch as soon as the wick burned down far enough.
Grocery store produce departments get crates of veggies in waxed cardboard boxes. Being waxed, they are not recyclable with the regular cardboard. They are just disposed of in their landfill waste. Get friendly with the produce managers and they will likely give or save some for you. They are waterproof and handy for many things, such as fire starters, and also for construction uses, such as forms for concrete, building temporary rainproof structures, improvised cooler chests or storage bins etc.
I've been soaking scrap papers in beeswax (it started with expired phone book pages) for over 20 years. It's a perfect fire starter. I call it homemade birch bark.
I have a use for these. I use them as moulds for making candles out of old used candle wax. All you need is a piece of string for the wick. And tear off the bog roll tube.
Been saving these ingredients , but I thinking along the lines of candle shaped . Glad I saw this video before going with the old plan . If make according to the Way Point plan , I can pack more in less space ! 👍
Its the little things that I value when watching your videos. I have done all sorts of projects with cans, but it never occurred to me to dent the rim to create a pouring spout. Excellent stuff. (FYI I can tell you do this all the time from how worn your ferro rod is. Most used one Ive seen)
if its really hot outside, like 100F here in Kansas, you maybe need to wrap the waxed flat in foil to keep it from melting all over the place in wallet or pack.
An excellent idea matey. There's a lot of other usage too as well as a medical emergency. On a few ocasssion on a camping trip, we had to use the roll as a "spacer" for someone who had an asthma attack. We also use it to take some alfoil, glad wrap, medical & gorilla tape etc with us when doing bushcraft in the outback. Greetings from Australia.
I use cardboard egg cartons fill them with wood chips you can buy at a pet store. Pour wax from candles purchased at the dollar store or a thrift store. I also bought a pot and a tablespoon from a thrift store to fill the cups filled with wood chips.
I have 2 of that exact stove and love them. I've been making something similar with toilet roll inners for year's with just a small upgrade imo I add some dryer lint into them and cut them down into 2 to 3 sections. They burn longer and help get fires going even in wet conditions very well.
Good idea. I don't use toilet paper so I don't have rolls. I use paper napkins which are one half the price and take up one half to storage space in my cupboard. First I used them in the kitchen for drying my hands and then they get transferred to the bathroom. Saves me money and storage space. Plus it's much easier to pack paper napkins in your bug out bag compared to a round toilet roll.
Yea you know getting the information out there for all whom can make use of if great, i say sometimes you have to use your imaganatio, and you can make just about anything and thats what you do for all of us your followers!
And all the repliys are great , so i ask that maybe you could come up with something compleatly new for us, and paper twoels are great too. Sorry bad spelling and small keyboard on phone.
So paper towels rolls are great for cordage, and you can crush them in your pack and still cordage wont tangle, and put said cordage back, always have to use your things so they are working to your needs.
I've been saving my roll cardboards and picked up some candles on sale... Once it stops raining, this week, I'm finishing up this project. Thanks for reminding me to put it on my schedule.😉
I fill them with sawdust and wax, with a jute wick, for emergency light, heat, cooking source or fire starter. It's a way to use up your sawdust and toilet paper rolls.
I've done this with a bunch of materials, including cotton balls. Those will give impressive flames, but waxing unrolled cotton balls is like mad science! The making itself is easy enough, it's just that they can release 5 feet long flames in high winds... and I mean 5 feet long, not 5 feet tall!
Another similar use is to stuff the tubes with cloths dryer lint and use it as a fire starter. It's not as compact but less preperation and made of all wast. They work well with a ferrell rod or any other spark.
I'm disabled and in an apartment so I don't do a lot of woodworking. So I go to home Depot and ask for a big bag of sawdust. They're always cutting wood for people and they always have sawdust on hand. When I get home I melt the remnants of old candles into a coffee can and fish out any of the WIC tabs that are still in there and then I pour in the sawdust and mix it up with the wax. Ends up looking kind of like peanut butter with granola mixed in. Then I either put it in an egg carton or stuff it in half an empty toilet paper roll to use his fire starters. Another one that works well is those cotton pads that you use to remove makeup you get a whole sleeve of them really cheap dip them all in wax just leave a little bit exposed without any wax on it to work is a wick. In fact I used to give those out as gifts at Christmas to the friends I had that either had fireplaces, wood stoves, or did a lot of camping.
Good idea for a nifty fire starter. Another thought would be to wrap the flattened and waxed tube with some wax paper so the wax doesn't rub off the tube in your pocket or wallet.
@@WayPointSurvival You're welcome and thanks for the interesting video. Would like to see more handy tips on simple things that one can make that can be used during hard times.
Adding some stones or small rocks into the large pan helps to ensure the smaller can will not stick to the large one if you should ever let the water evaporate (or it gets stuck for some other reason). I've seen this happen. Wax can spill onto the heat source and ignite.
You can also put lint inside the cardboard toilet paper roll, and roll it in newspaper, twist the ends (tape the ends if you have to). These can be used to start a fire!
Ok I like that a lot 👍 I have a lotta cotton balls with Vaseline & though I can get the baggy pretty flat those would store a lot more flat. Pretty cool my man.
James, THANK YOU for this idea. I’ve been saving these rolls, because I too always thought there aught to be something useful they could be used for. I hated to throw them away. thinking someday either I, or someone else, would come up with a great idea and you have. This is such a great idea and makes use of something we’d ordinarily throw away and waste. AWESOME IDEA, AWESOME VIDEO, AWESOME JOB!!!
I plan on doing this with some Jute rope making a tinder wick. I need to remember that I can do this with other materials like what you have shown. Thanks very much.
Great idea. I cut them in half , fill with potting soil and start my garden plants in them. Then plant the plants tubes and all in my garden.
Good idea. Another idea, you can get a 100 count box of individually sealed alcohol wipes for a little over a dollar. Make very good fire starters along with 1st aid.
Very true. Thanks for watching!
You can also fill the roll with soil, place a seed in it, let it start and then just plant the roll in your garden.
Yup
Indeed.
Did not know that !!!
This is another project I'm working on...
Ah yes i did that for years.
One of my favorite fire starters. When dipping the roll in wax I like to add a string, and then fill in interior with dryer lint. Build the fire around the device and then light the string--it's incredibly reliable.

I do that with dried pinecones in the fall. They look nice, and get the fireplace going every time. I put pine oil in the paraffin too.

if its really hot outside, like 100F here in Kansas, you maybe need to wrap the waxed flat in foil to keep it from melting all over the place in wallet or pack.
Actually, once the wax soaks into the cardboard, as long as you don't put too much in it, it shouldn't be a problem.

Another similar use is to stuff the tubes with cloths dryer lint and use it as a fire starter. It's not as compact but less preperation and made of all wast. They work well with a ferrell rod or any other spark.
Absolutely. Thanks for watching!
Nice, thanks for sharing. God bless and stay safe.
As always, thanks for watching and God bless you too!
Your British middle aged subs are shouting Blue Peter during the opening of this video James
Lol. I'm not even sure what that means! Thanks for watching, my friend!
@@WayPointSurvival A hugely popular kids show in the 60s and 70s in the UK called Blue Peter. They made things every week from toilet cores!
Ah! I see. Thanks for the info!
Not a bad idea. Thanks for sharing it.

Excellent ideas, thanks for watching and for sharing them!
James another very clever idea. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
A good idea. Like you said, a person could make several of them and be set for several fires. Good video as always....
Thanks, my friend!
Good idea for a nifty fire starter.
Another thought would be to wrap the flattened and waxed tube with some
wax paper so the wax doesn't rub off the tube in your pocket or wallet.
Sure, you could do that. Thanks for watching!
@@WayPointSurvival You're welcome and thanks for the interesting video. Would like to see
more handy tips on simple things that one can make that can be used during hard times.
I put dryer lint in my rolls and drip left over candle wax in mine
Yes, that works well also it's just not as compact as what I showed for carrying.
Adding some stones or small rocks into the large pan helps to ensure the smaller can will not stick to the large one if you should ever let the water evaporate (or it gets stuck for some other reason). I've seen this happen. Wax can spill onto the heat source and ignite.
Good idea!
Great second use for the all the Covid hoarded TP leftovers . Keep posting these ideas , we will do our part with both thumbs up !
Thanks for watching!
Excellent show old man . Great idea . Going to do some.
Excellent!
You can also put lint inside the cardboard toilet paper roll, and roll it in newspaper, twist the ends (tape the ends if you have to). These can be used to start a fire!
Sure, you could do that!
Ok I like that a lot 👍 I have a lotta cotton balls with Vaseline & though I can get the baggy pretty flat those would store a lot more flat. Pretty cool my man.
Thanks so much!
People talk about using dryer lint the same way as cotton balls.
@@jamesvoigt7275 yes lint is a very good fire starter also cat tails, they make terrific fire starter
Those single burner stoves are great
Indeed. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing
I pack it full of dryer lint and drip wax down through it works great even starting damp wood.
Thanks for watching!
Cool idea. I bet you could use old candles too. I always hate to throw out old candles this would be a good recycle for them.
Yes indeed! You could definitely use old candles.
I saved all my wife’s old candles before she passed away in order to recycle them in a similar manner. Great idea James.
Thanks so much, glad you liked it!
also works for balls of Dryer lint, or you can put dryer lint in the cups of an egg carton and pour gulf wax into it.
Hi James - thanks for another great tip! Stay safe. ATB. Nigel.
Thanks for watching, my friend!
Paper towel rolls will work good too.
Yep!
Cool! Never thought of that. Thanks again
Thanks for watching!
I plan on doing this with some Jute rope making a tinder wick. I need to remember that I can do this with other materials like what you have shown. Thanks very much.
Thanks for watching!
That's great, I like this better than a tube with dryer lint.
Thanks, glad you liked it!
