Many iconic actresses from Hollywood's Golden Age famously chose not to wear bras. Some did it to boost their sex appeal, while Bette Davis did it because she believed that wearing bras gave women breast cancer. Bette sadly ended up dying of breast cancer anyway, though not before living and long and fulfilling life of 81 years. In modern Hollywood, Jennifer Aniston is an example of an actress that is carrying on the Old Hollywood tradition of not wearing a bra. Jennifer has opted out of wearing a bra since her early days on the hit 1990s series Friends and has since become an outspoken advocate for the "Free the Nipple" movement. I recall working at a tv station where a women kept having her spiked-heel shoes stuck in the air holes of the fake floor (tv equipment cables lay under the fake floor so they weren't continually tripped over). I suggested maybe she step out of the shoes or possibly switch to flatter shoes but she absolutely refused. "Then my calves wouldn't be attractive", she reasoned. Yeah. Looking hot was more important to her than being able to safely walk around the studio.

It always has stuck me interesting how many regular day women show it all then get angy if a guy notices. If they didn't want you to look they wouldn't do it.

A tip : when you post a pictorial essay on women who go braless, you might want to illustrate the point a bit more graphically. How is it that we were more visually titillated back in the 1920s and 30s, then after the league of decency or the Hayes office or whoever died off, the 60s and 70s, than today? I demand that you correct this grievous error. I, and I'm sure many others who may be too timid to address this issue, wish to keep abreast of such things. Are we supposed to take your word for it? My first wife in the early 1970's always went braless unless she was meeting my parents. Gawd, I do miss those days, especially walking through the cold food department of Krogers. These days, you see nada. Grocery shopping has become so boring.

One of the first women to routinely go braless on series television was Marlo Thomas during the 5th season of THAT GIRL. Maureen O'Hara drove her male costars to distraction by not wearing a bra during the filming of the movie AGAINST ALL FLAGS. Finally, almost every young actress that appeared on THE LOVE BOAT went braless in the formalwear costumes that were worn. (at least a very great proportion of them seem to be without foundation wear.)

In the 60s and 70s a very high percentage of women in the US went braless. If your not 60 years old you wont know this. I went to school in that era and every single one of my teachers went braless. They werent flaunting it, their clothes werent giving any indications. I wouldnt have known if they didnt lean over. If I did happen to get a good down blouse shot, I never really paid attention because it wasnt a big deal. Most of the students were braless, nobody really cared. For some reason these days going braless is almost like wearing a sign that says I'm being inappropriate, look at me. From my own personal experiences, my wife never really wore a bra, regardless of what she was wearing till early 2000s when it began being an inappropriate thing at her work place.

I wasn't aware of a time when Jennifer Anniston DID wear a bra.
There is really almost no evidence that a bra has any other reason other than cosmetic to be worn. With age women's breast will start to droop and no amount of bra wearing will prevent that. There is some evidence that going without will strengthen the chest muscles and help hold the breast in place as intended. Society's idea of modesty is what causes women, even those who hate them, to wear bras
I truely believe that women should do whatever makes them comfortable, but as someone who was a teenager in the 70's, I wouldn't have changed that time for anything! I think women's breasts are beautiful, and I loved every minute of that era.

George Lucas set his film in a different galaxy, and made a lot of small rules that most people never noticed, such as no buttons or zippers on clothing. I always believed that his no bra policy was that another culture from another galaxy wouldn't have used bras, as they serve no purpose. Many people feel the same way about underwear.

What we do know, but ignore, is that women that don't wear bras have very little breast cancer; you would think that that would trigger a response with women, but it doesn't.
I have a fuzzy memory of the television show, Room 222. It was about teachers at Walt Whitman High School. Michael Constantine and Karen Valentine played educators. There was an episode about a girl who went braless. That is all I can remember.

The mid-to-late 1970s brought out the phenomenon called "Jiggle TV". Not only did Charlie's Angels feature bra-less women, many other shows and live events of the time did too. ABC went so far as to promote a special series called "Battle of the Network Stars" in which actors and actresses competed against other tv networks in athletic events. The show was a big hit in part because some of the actresses competed without bras (on their own accord or by production insistence is hard to say). This was satirized by Saturday Night Live in a spoof ad called "Network Battle of the T's and A's" which promoted the show as "the biggest T's....the nicest A's" as images of running and cycling women flashed on the screen. How this got by the censors, I can't imagine but it was an open secret that much of Hollywood was going bra-less.
Actress Adrienne Barbeau was invited to be part of the Battle of the Network Stars, and she recalled the story of her wondering why the network thought she was athletically inclined. Some one, I think her husband, told her it was they way she bounced when going down stairs.

I grew up in the '70's and most of the girls in school rarely wore bras. In fact with the hip hugger jeans girls wore at the time, the jeans were such low rise most girls didn't wear panties either. The was no such thing as low rise panties at the time!

The attitude of the American public has made the issue of bra or not, a controversial subject. A woman's breasts are part of who she is, like it or not. She shouldn't be ashamed to be admired for being beautiful. It should not be construed as an invitation to undesired offers, but certainly doesn't diminish the possibility of attracting attention from certain people. In short, women like to know they're attractive. but want to decide just whom they want to attract.

The famous Jayne Mansfield/Sophia Loren is from a series of photos. It was a publicity stunt by Mansfield who was literally bouncing around, deliberately flopping and spilling out of her dress. Sophia Loren was appalled, but that one timeless photo is what Mansfield and her publicist were after.
I seem to remember that the Bra was originally designed because of a film (or possibly a play) and it was felt that the woman's breasts were distracting from the performance. One of the crew was an engineer designed a structure to support them - the actor found it comfortable and the industry was born... As Jennifer says wear what you want...
An alternate theory is that the bra is a more comfortable alternative to the corset.
But, before the bra, there was the corset, the teddy, and before then ... ?
