The son of a college classmate was in OCC-231. My son was in OCC-232. Both were commissioned as second lieutenants.

Be in great physical condition b4 you get to OCS. If not you will be behind most of your peers and most importantly risk being injured/recycled. Good luck!

@@mrsandta I had a 286 prior to leaving for OCS. Max Pull, Plank, and a 20:20 run. On final PFT I still had max pull but did 2 less from when I left. Max plank and a 18:40 run. If you’re in 270+ I have confidence that you will have the ability to exceed your expectations while at OCS

If you have OCS on your mind now, understand that your “mind” will be exposed to new depths of misery, exhaustion, sleep and food deprivation and stress such that it will all be new to your mind. You cannot exactly mentally prepare for it until you’ve experienced it. And I’m leaving out all of the other e vernal stressors like the 24/7 harassment package, weather, etc.. Whatever you’re doing to prepare, you need to plumb the depths of as much possible misery and exhaustion as you can to inure yourself to the coming onslaught. Being in top physical condition as far as long distance running, pull ups, sit ups (don’t lift weights) will help you endure the unendurable. No coffee or caffeinated beverages so stop drinking it now. And put the words “quit” “DOR” out of your mind. If you even think of those words they will become your friends at the most trying moments. They will want you to be comfortable with the idea of them. Doubts are similar. I had one good thing going for me at PLC Combined in 87’ and that was what the experience of returning home to face my WWII grandfather would be if I told him I quit. Since I would never entertain the possibility I knew I’d never quit. Doesn’t mean you won’t hate it, or even hate your DI’s. But, much like an ignorant teen hates his disciplinarian father, in time most will come to love him because he only wanted you to be the best. Same with the DI’s. They want you to succeed by leaving everything out in the training areas and on the Grinder. When you graduate you’ll respect the Hell out of them for what they’ve taught you. Simple things, like the dummy standing on line in an inspection at attention who wipes the sand flea off his nose. That’s the guy who gives away your pos to the enemy and ends up introducing your platoon’s foreheads to the enemy’s warheads. Simple. Fear is a great motivator. So, if you entertain the word or concept of quitting or failure, you’re halfway to it. I had doubts whether I’d be dead from overexertion, but I knew I’d never quit. Not because I’m so hard. But because I knew I’d rather be in a pine box than face my mow deceased grandfather who volunteered for WWII and fought as a tanker in Patton’s Army. Find that something or someone whom you’d be disgraced to see if you quit. Keep THEM in your mind and you’ll make it. And by God show up in shape.

Can I ask a few questions? I got accepted in '79 when I was a Jr. at Georgia Tech with a couple buddies but as I had the big Engineer's paycheck waiting, I opted out of OCS's ten-year commitment but I kinda feel like I went thru OCS vicariously with my buddies letters. Back then OCS wasn't coed and I have always wondered where the females went to OCS or what their commissioning requirements were vs what they are today. Also I was told by one of my friends that just days before graduation there was a Go/No Go Timed 20 mile hump through the hills around Quantico and that there were good candidates that missed the mark by just seconds and were dropped. Just curious if that requirement is still in place and if so as OCS is now apparently (based in some of your photos) coed, is the time element still in place?

just graduated PLC JRs this past summer, from what we heard from the seniors in the program/OCC they've mostly done away with the long hikes at the end.

This video right here explains the huge difference between Enlisted Marines and Commissioned Marines. Everything has to be more gentle and nuanced for OCS because, heaven forbid Chip and Victoria go without wearing a wrist watch, missing their cell phones & earbuds or miss having weekends OFF for off-base liberty during officer boot camp! (WOW!) The Few, The Pampered, The Officers. You'll notice that it is not the officers who are making these candidates into Marines: it's Enlisted Staff Non-Commissioned Officers who conduct this training. Smart officers in the fleet will always value the advice and guidance of these senior enlisted experts. The finest officers I served with held true to this advice, and most of those were actually "Mustangs", prior enlisted Marines. The ones with elitist superior attitudes do not last long, nor do they have "genuine" loyalty from the Marines they lead. We've all seen the ones who let their commission go to their heads. Enlisted Marines can spot you in an instant. Don't be that one. Conduct yourself correctly and your fellow Marines will happily go thru hell & back right by your side. Good Luck! Semper Fi! (Staff Sergeant, active duty, 1984-1998)
