You are partially right. He was a bonifide R&B star before he joined NE. He had some success as a solo artist and a hit duet with fellow DC native Stacy Lattisaw on "Perfect Combination." He joined NE to record "NE Heartbreak" with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis in Minneapolis before the smash tour with the same name in 1988. I know because I took my then girlfriend to the Capital Centre to witness Johnny coming home to a crazed audience of 18,000 plus. He did his solo Motown album which featured "Rub You the Right Way," in addition to "Fair Weather Friend" and "Wrap My Body Tight" which featured the production mastery of Babyface along with Jam & Lewis on "Rub."
The solo record on Motown was released in 1991.
