Guttakrutt..

A marvellous piece of cinema. Gunnar Vikene has written and directed an amazing movie which is both shocking and moving. The cinematography and lighting is beautiful, and the acting of the two leads - Kristoffer Joner and Pål Sverre Hagen - is sublime. But also many of the others are very good, even in many of the younger roles. The ageing in the 1972 scene were we see some of the characters a last time is the most convincing I have seen - not sure if it was CGI or make up. If the latter the movie could be nominated for an Oscar for that alone. This being Norway's official pick for the Academy Awards this year, was a great choice. Cause this one is better than Dunkirk!

Netflix has bought the rights to the movie so it will be available worldwide in april! But they are turning it into a series, splitting the movie into 3 episodes with additional scenes added that were not in the movie originally 👍🏼

I'm not gonna waste two seconds of my life on this movie. Why? Because it's too little, too late. Per Hansson, Jon Michelet and many others fought long and hard for these veterans, hoping they'd at least get some kind of recognition while they're still alive. Now that they're all gone, what's the point? For accolade, i.e. an "Oscar"?? Pretending to care? And get this: None of these sailors had a choice, either sail or go to jail. So please, have these sailors, these true heroes in mind the next time you hear some of these "gutta på skauen" brag about their deeds during WWII. The only Norwegians who actually made an effort and a difference in the fight against the Nazies, was those who served at sea. Shame on Notraship, and shame on Norway for the way they treated them. Moreover, shame on Norway for how they treated the Jews. In comparison, the Danes saved almost 7000 Danish Jews, Norway deported every Jew they could get their hands on and shipped them off to Hitler's death camps. And don't think for a second that the socalled Norwegian "resistance" didn't know what was going on.

My, my. The only thing you got right here was the unfairness of denying the war sailors their earned salaries after the war. The reason given for not paying the sailors what they were owed was a claim that could increase inflation. Many of them were not able to work because of their "weak nerves," as it was called back then - today they would have been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. "Gutta på skauen" were far from the only resitence forces back then. There was the Shetland gang, ordinary fishermen and their captains which started out helping people - including some jews - flee to Shetland and Scotland. After a while the Shetland gang was given their own submarine destroyers by the Norwegian government, but donated by the U.S. Those were faster and equipped with defence means. There were three of them, named Hessa, Vigra and Hitra. One of the Shetland gang, Leif Larsen, finished the second world war as the highest decorated allied navy officer. And among the people the Shetland gang brought with them from Norway was members of Company Linge, a group of Norwegian saboteurs who, like the Shetland gang, was under UK command. Members of Company Linge included Max Manus, famous for among other things having led the operation exploding German warships in Oslo harbor, and the famous Vemork gang, who succeeded blowing up the Norsk Hydro plant in occupied Norway, plus - since some heavy water was already loaded on a train to be shipped - the Tinnsjø ferry the train with the heavy water was on. Those explotions prevented the Germans from obtaining heavy water, and consequently delayed the German development of an atomic bomb. Bjørn Vest is another group of saboteurs. They operated from the mountains around Matre on the west coast of Norway, and lived most of the war in those mountains, and often had armed confrontations with German troops sent out to get them. Than there are the many civilians who either helped, fed and hid downed English pilots, helped people flee the country to either the UK or Sweden, provided information to the allieds, or sabotaged what the German forces were trying to achieve. That of some of those who joined "Gutta på skauen" did so so late into the war they barely were trained before the war was over, does not change the bravery, selfsacrifice and the dedication of all those who did what they could when they were called to do so. Whether they were an engineer at the Vemork plant warning about Germany's nuclear ambitions, ordinary families helping and hiding a downed English pilot, or helping someone across the border to Sweden, a teenager radio amateur risking his life to report intelligence info from Bergen to England, or a young man joining Company Linge to be trained and used in the fight against the nazis. Just like the war sailors of the merchant navy they are all heroes whose effort, dedication and sacrifice has saved most of us of going through similar experiences. One of those groups or individuals didn't win the war, they did it together with similar groups and individuals from many countries. The most important thing was not what they did, but the fact they did something gave hope to many, many more - and inspired some of them to do something. Heroics is not something we should seek, but something we can be called to without wanting it, and without knowing how we shall manage it. Those who have found themselves in such situations we should have the deepest respect and sympathy for, and not rank their sacrifice, tornment or importance up against each other.

@@Tvjunkieful12Hear hear. And very shockingly Bjørn insinuates that history flicks only matter if those who experienced it is still alive. That has to be the most horrific statement I've seen in a while...
