  • Alfred and his childhood friend Sigbjørn are working on a merchant ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean when World War II breaks out. They are unarmed civilians on the front lines of a war they never asked to join. As the two men struggle for survival in a spiral of violence and death, where at any moment German submarines may attack their valuable vessels, they cling to one goal: to survive and return home. War Sailor, or Krigsseileren, is a Norweigan Netflix limited series adapted from a film of the same name. Is this WWII drama worth watching? My father had the worst PTSD from combat I have ever seen. Until now, only THE DEER HUNTER came close to capturing its cost. This is one of the truest movies I’ve ever seen. It’s most important emotional elements are understated, but felt all the more, to devastating effect.

10 out 10. Ripped my heart out and brought tears to my eyes. I am proud to be a survivor of my Scandinavian heritage and have incredible respect for those who did and didn't survive.

Stumbled on this and watched straight through. It was the Norwegian version of my own family. Grandad joined the USMM almost immediately after Pearl Harbor, sailed on T-2 gasoline tankers in the North Atlantic from 2/42-6/46. Left my grandmother w/3 children almost same ages as the children in the movie. Came home a very different man. Moved his family away from the city to a small rural town, bought a business he could run by himself, and drank his six pack of Ballentyne while reading his “potboilers” alone every night. He liked. me for some reason, and I would ask the questions a small child would ask…and he’d give me answers “sanitized” for my age. And those were just what was portrayed in the movie. Convoys did not stop, you were on your own. The terror of standing out from Bayonne, knowing German subs sat right off our coast early in the war waiting for ships to be silhouetted against the lights of NYC. Relief at getting to Halifax where the Canadian Navy (outstanding) picked up escort. Seeing the next ship in line torpedoed in the middle of the night…This captured it like nothing I’ve seen.

5/5 absolute. Very good historical recostruction, superb inspirated acting. Realism at its best. Respect for commitment, pain, sorrow. Gentleness for human broken feelings. The unsaid, so bad, buried in the depth of the heart. That not enough celebrated part of the war, not the one of the soldiers. A Ingmar Bergman silent acting. You understand 100% what he/they are saying without words.

I just finished this. Harrowing because the characters even the minor ones are so developed, so real. I will rewatch this and hope it attains cult status. It reminded me of a Jacques Brel song "Amsterdam".

As a seafarer, from norway, with a young family... this absolutely obliterated me. It tore me to shreds and then spat me out as a quivering yet utterly enthralled blob of abruptly exposed emotions without ANY warning.
It is perhaps one of the most magnficently told and presented stories I have ever seen put to film.
Like... all quiet on the western front was... ok I guess... but it absolutely pales in comparison to Krigsseileren. In my humbe and admittedly biased opinion ofc.

I binged it last night ..it was excellent . The first two episodes were riveting. The third act was more emotionally conflicting and dramatic but I give it a solid A for sure. Great different angle to WW2…I think part of a few other recent shows on Netflix going off the usual battles and arenas where the WAR was fought. This one shown Norwegian merchant sailors and their families. The other series was THE UNKNOWN BATTLE about the situation in the Netherlands and Belgium along the Scheldt Estuary in 1944 as the Germans still held that territory after DDay…both are excellent filled with realism of the horrors of war.

Absolutely effing harrowing. Watched all three parts straight through and I’m not sure I’ve recovered. I haven’t seen anything this affecting in a very long time.

As someone who has spoken to veterans and befriended them, also watching several interviews with vet as well, some parts of this show honestly show some of the best scenes I've ever seen that show how war affected everyday people. 100/10 show. Won't spoil parts of the show, but it made me cry like a little bitch. And wanna learn Norwegian

Thanks Chris for another excellent recommendation. I enjoy war dramas, survival films & will definitely watch it this weekend. The 2 war films I saw in my younger days that have really stuck with me, Apocalypse Now & The Deer Hunter, can be very unsettling if not prepared.

My father was a US Merchant Marine during WWII, graduating from the USMM Academy while still a teenager, becoming a captain in his early 20s during the way (they grew up fast then) and sailing the world... including the North Atlantic. The merchant seaman suffered horribly; many of the ones who survived suffered PTSD, as shown in this film. The US government viewed them as civilians and never recognized their service with benefits, pensions, or even an acknowledgement. It was a shameful episode in our nation's wartime history. If you haven't seen it, look for "Greyhound", and under-the-radar flick with Tom Hanks

I am really excited about this. For war stories, Band of Brothers tops my list. Hands down I still think about it years after seeing it. I also liked an old movie with Gregory Peck that I've seen several times. 'Twelve O'Clock High'. That film never gets old to me.
Thanks Chris. Best critic - hands down on UA-cam

Chris , I’m from Belfast, witnessed war in the 70’s , and am Alive ,
That’s what Freddy said, in Part 3
We have no concept of what it must’ve felt like to be floating in the sea, and German U-boat appear right beside us…

This is a compelling watch. Great performances. This is something I learned. I had no idea so may merchant ships were sunk. We are talking hundreds. They did the math and pretty much for every 3 ships 2 of them will most likely be sunk. But they didn't have much choice. So I was confused....was the submarine who came to the aid of after they were being hit a German submarine? Very good series and glad they did make this into a short series.

That was a german sub yes, not only were they having a language barrier difficulty, but Alfred and Sigbjorn didnt want to face them, also they were wearing Kreigsmarine uniforms

    • @Fidelity89
      @Fidelity89 Рік тому

It was tradition in the kriegsmarine to interrogate the crew of a sunk ship. They would also give a bottle of alcohol. The sinking in the show is in 1944 and by that time the u-boats were having a bad time too, anti-sub technology was improving rapidly and the u-boats became sitting ducks. Why the convoy isn't there dropping depth charges is what puzzles me, were they stragglers? The show never makes that entirely clear. To me it's also a good watch albeit a little too bleak at times. I would have liked some more naval stuff and maybe some scenes to lighten the mood slightly. Just my personal opinion. Im reading a Norwegian novel now about a war sailor and it's the best on the subject, wish they would translate that.
