- Boeing’s Compact Laser Weapons System harnesses directed energy on its targets. The system recently reached a milestone at an exercise at Point Mugu, Calif. by tracking and disabling a moving, untethered unmanned aerial vehicle. The Compact Laser Weapons System is portable and sets up quickly.
looking forward to the anti-mosquito laser
That cannot fall into the wrong hands guy's, nice work!
+Gerald Fritts Who are the wrong guys, the ones protecting their homeland or the ones invading it?
+Gerald Fritts Actually, plans are falling into the wrong hands all the time. You are aware of at least some of the many data breaches which have been made public throughout the world, right? Now think about all the data breaches that have not been made public and have been covered up which we don't know about. :-(
Makes you wonder about what happened to those mysteriously downed planes with zero evidences of artillery or bullet holes.
I'm gonna coat my UAV with mirrors... Hahahaha
no comments? Guess I'm first. Thanks for showing us your Death Ray, I mean Directed Energy :P
So basically it's the DEAD (Directed Energy Air Defence) System from Black Ops 3?
Quite an achievement. Congratulations!
Now sell and set one up at each airport to protect against flying hobby drones that are flying in a CTR and are a danger to commercial flights!
What will they invent next? Drone with reflective paint (or clouds of protective particles)?
the last thing we need are more weapons!
What's really needed is something the size of a brief case that can shoot down small, amateur-size drones that are incursioning airport flight paths, forest fire air drop zones and urban no fly zones.
Lasers are cool
will the device be able to be attached to a shark?!?
lego movie
Gimme dat! I need one for all these swarms of drones flying around my area. They wont know what hit them!
they been made laser weapons since the 1980's like come on!
Great. Another weapon.
+elokubano im saying ..how about a cure for cancer
+Ben Brave Productions Maybe the cure for cancer is Not spending billions and billions and billions of dollars each year on cancer research. Maybe the cure is as simple as people eating right, not smoking, not drinking, exercising, taking care of themselves, reducing stress, not being exposed to hazardous chemicals, etc....? Seriously: I would Really like to know, if anyone does actually know: How much money in total has been spent world-wide on cancer research for the last 50 years? I'll try to search the Web now for that answer.
***** Maybe...Maybe not
I've got a compact system that sets up in minutes and directs energy in seconds. Here's a hint, it also goes "BOEING!"
That's some funny shift
my stepdad is airforce and these laser defense weapons have been in use since 2004
" track air and ground targets as they are moving using a mid-wave infrared sensor"... So wrap it up in foil then?
Real smart, can't wait until this gets in the hands of the wrong person
+Jerry P I'm guessing Boeing has developed this technology so that they can already begin developing technology in their aircraft to counter such devices... test resistant material, provide robust redundant systems in case one is melted, design fuel system that avoid combustion if targeted, and so on. It's inevitable that this technology would eventually mature, so perhaps it was best that they do it so that they can also reduce the likelihood of it taking down large military or commercial aircraft. Simply refusing to develop dangerous technology in case it ends up in the wrong hands is itself dangerous.
There's a difference between useful technology for the greater good and this. I understand the point you are making but you can't honestly say you see a need for something like this can you?
Put em on "friken Sharks"
Space rifling boosters warheads to spin, shedding the laser point into a fog of weaker energy, or point another laser at the laser point for cancellation effect? Electromagnetic jacket might also work along with Delta speed energy re-entry.
i liked it better when Val Kilmer made popcorn in the Professor's house with one
feeding the worlds hungry one bomb at a time
it will be great when our soldiers have them on their weapon, eventually friend or foe ID.
If its a co2 laser then element 42 is the answer to the drone developer, I love the number 42, Life the universe and everything, but yes laser sharks :)
Yes sharks yes, but at the moment what its the 42nd most present element in the universe. Its all sixes and sevens to me ;)
Would they put it on their passenger planes for defense?
good luck locking on to my 3D rc heli long enough to bring it down :P
Got popcorn? :D
could the Lazer be used to start snow removal avelanches
This freaking people, spending so much money for another weapon but can't invent something to put out a simple forest fire quickly.
I prefer my lasers with red beams and pew pew sounds. Laser battles are going to be boring, just people setting on fire in silence.
А в России зато скрепы, духовность и Путин!
+Иван Петрович Сидоров Сказала говорящая дохлая лиса...
So where does reflection make any sense here?
Is this being narrated by Elastigirl/Mrs Incredible from the Disney film?
What is the maximum speed of the target?
+Frederick König as long as they know the direction, the speed and the target's not maneuvering at all, has the right body plating and no reflective surfaces...oh wait!
I wonder the same thing. I guess after mach whatever is useless
MP USMC SRT marketing-blahblah by people who've NEVER actually worked with real laser systems.
To hit a target, to actually do ANY damage to it, you need to both FOCUS the laser on the distance of the target and the exact spot at the exact distance with the right precalculation of how the object will move in the next millisecond. If you manage both (there is no system able to achieve this right now. And no, a ship's phalanx CAN'T strike even two hits in a row on a target - despite the high-precision radar it uses.
Plus one thing: These powerful lasers all have a distinctive frequency (for those who don't know what that is or how it works: Let's say color). The selection of frequencies for these lasers is quite limited, well-known to the public and is defined by the crystal you use to create the laser inside the "cannon". Which means: If someone paints the drone with a color that's reflecting just THAT frequency or adds a simple, free-to-everyone buyable laser protection foil (price: less than a dollar per squaremeter) the laser will do exactly NOTHING to it.
This thing might look impressive at the first glance, but outside your tech zoo it's WORTHLESS.
lol
umm guys its light it goes the speed of light. Unless you're joking.
"for 10s of years" just say decades that bothers me
That's at least a start in regards of protection.
Protection? More like destruction?
LazarJ
Destruction of drones trying to ram airliners with 800+ heads on board yes.
And yes a cheap drone can ram a airliner out of the air, all you need is explosives and fly it into its turbines, every cheap terrorist can do that.
Chris K If its used like that, then great.
Good, but if you target the ray inside the cockpit the objective will be more fast
We can now have LASER Skeet shooting!
Exactly what the world needs, More toys for tyrants.
Nice job Boeing! :)
Dear Boeing, Please produce more videos starring Isaac Neal. Doesn't matter what the vids are about, he's total eye-candy and could sell me anything!
I could see these surrounding just about every military base.
what if the drone is made from reflective material?
wonder how much that costs?
Excellent >:)
Its finally up on the workbench, CLAWS?
We don't need Bill Nye, just get his stunt double
1:40
Probably what happened to Malaysia airlines
What about the Death Star??!
Command&Conquer:Zero Hour.
Laser Hummer uses pretty much same weapon.
Can we have a laser party with this?
Really? Do we really need ANOTHER laser?
What about corner reflector on the target? ))))
isit a Damons hand? or...
one step closer to a bipedal war mech. a metal gear
Real Genius?
Cool, but Lockheed had this technology a decade ago.
Time to buy stock in boeing
What is the range of this laser?
THE FUTURE
But that's a foamy model. Can it shot down big drones?
I do not think its supposed too, its made to take out small uav's.
***** It's awesome then. I guess they didn't show the full 2 kW power on the video, by looks it was less than 100 W. ;-)
+Michał Gawron nope
"tens of years?" You mean decades right?
yea but once the drone bkows or crashses is going end up fallen towords us the fact saying whan falls form the sky
@Chris K protection? So lost.
now make it compact and add it to a trucking gun ! :D
@K Louden facts
Nj Boeing! Don't let the bad guys steal this. Go USA.
Star Wars
+MassEffectReaper no real STAR WARS, who taught physics knows. ABL Boeing 747 big fail usa capitalism debt tech! xDDDD
Thts kinda kewl but scary at the same time. I got mixed feelings on this
1980 video?
I want one
so a light saber
if you don't put one on a shark I'll put the opposite end on your facility 😢
That is one HOT nerd! (0:20)
???????? Ooooh i get it cause there usin lasers
If we can't see the laser beam it isn't as cool
Cover the planes in mirrors
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away.......
Star wars begin :)
So God said: " let there be laser wars"
Real Genius anyone?
So Boeing makes nice big jetliners and now they make stuff that can shoot them down? Yaaaay.
That's good isn't it, is that good?
Can I have another peanut.
I like peanuts!
Star Trek+
Star Wars
so let's tell everyone how to make it!
This is the end of all the expensive toys. How come ever version/demonstration uses the hold & burn w/no range, when on sci -fi it is more intense bullet like approach. The limit of range & power will only b ever worked out w/a pulse wood pecker approach. Hit the target is not the problem, nor time, it is w/enough of a blow. Gunning a jet verses trying to get a cannon shell on it for 1 shot effect. As lasers get better the mirror like heat shielding on a potential target will get ever better. Sustained damage may do the job n real world better than hold & burn. It all comes down to range, less than a football field burn away, but mile or so pinging a target w/long range never miss bullets seem better approach.
Using this on humans in the battlefield... oh lord
Pew pew
Not good for humanity, less weapons more planes please.
Gives me headache.
Whao
anyone wanna buy a mirror?
yeah !! a new way to kill ! ...
WHO or which countries are Boeing selling this technology to. no doubt like with guns EVERTBODY who wants one
1st
No one cares :/
Ahahahaha YAAAAAAAS THIS IS AWESOME
10s of years lmao
first
It is a sad state of affairs when the nerdiest milquetoast people who would never in a million years put themselves into a physical conflict, can design weapons that can murder thousands. Like every weapon ever, this will eventual be in the hands of exactly the people we don't want having it. Weapon manufacturers have a special place reserved in hell.
Just a toy
why exactly explain how it works so pubicly,oh its so you can let enemies countries know how it works so they can use it against you
too short range too expensice and too useless in real combat.
+00008HANK depends.. if you add this to a tank and it gives additional protection against rpg's and laser guided missiles.
