The 20mm gap is to avoid deflection onto the wall. This is filled with resilient materials such as expanded foam alternative mortar that has a lower compressive strength than the AAC blocks itself. It's highly recommended to fill this gap to avoid noise flanking transmission. The face of the wall can be sealed with a joint sealer if foam is used.
