  • Before I started my thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail I was a little nervous about resupplying. Being from the UK I had to be self reliant and couldn’t rely on anyone sending me anything. I over-planned just in case, but I needn’t have worried as after my first one it was so simple and you soon get the hang of it.
    In this video I discuss what is a resupply, different options, my resupply strategy, where I recommend sending boxes and advice I have gleamed to make planning your trip a little easier!
    If you want to support my work;
    ✩ Why not join my new world-wide Patreon community where you will get exclusive content such as; behind the scenes videos, blog posts, photos from my hikes and more! / marymansfield
    ✩ Send me one-off payments via PayPal at paypal.me/marymansfield79
    Here are the different places to consider sending a resupply box to;
    Mile 43: Mount Laguna (Desert) - I sent a box to the Post Office M-F 12-4pm & Sat 9am-11am.
    Mile 110: Warner Springs (Desert) - I sent a box to the Post Office 1 mile off trail - M-F 8am-11am, 11:30am-4pm & Sat 8am-1:30pm. Can also send a box to the Community Centre, the resupply a little pricy here.
    Mile 454: Agua Dolce (Desert) - I sent a box to Hiker Heaven 1 mile off trail. No post office here. Hiker Heaven is becoming a business. Regarding packages it seems they are still accepting but you might want to check their website for details.
    Mile 703: Kennedy Meadows (Sierra) - 1 mile off trail. I did not send a box here, but it is a good place to. Send your Bear Canister/Ice-Axe/Spikes/Snow Gear. Fill bear can with food!! Fee for collecting of $6. Outfitters sell a lot of food there as well as gear - I got everything here including resupply.
    Mile 745: Lone Pine (Sierra) - I did not send a box here, some people do but I wouldn’t recommend. There is a Post Office M-F 9:30am-12:30pm/1:30pm-4:30pm, but it is 24 miles off trail. You need bear canisters from here.
    Mile 877: Vermillion Valley Resort VVR (Sierra) - I did not send a box here, some hikers do but I wouldn’t recommend. There is a $30 fee and an extra $10 if name not written on all 4 sides of box. Send 2 weeks in advance. Ferry is $23 round trip. 7miles off trail via Bear Ridge Trail.
    Mile 1018: Kennedy Meadows North (Sierra) - 10miles off trail. However, I ordered a resupply from Casey & Sherri at Sonora Pass Resupply and they meet you on trail. Order online if over $50 at www.sonorapassresupply.com
    Mile 1198: Sierra City (Northern California) - I would recommend sending a resupply here. General store expensive and had no basics when I went in. 2miles off trail. Post Office M-F 10am-2pm & Sat 10:30am-12:30pm. Red Moose Inn used to hold packages but check first. Closed Mon/Tue.
    Mile 1289: Belden Town Resort I sent a box to here. $10 collection fee.
    Mile 1662: Seiad Valley (Northern California) I did not send a box here, some hikers do but you can manage without. Post Office M-F 12pm-4pm & Sat 12pm-1:30pm
    Mile 1830: Crater Lake Post Office (Oregon) - I did not send a box here, but many do. Post Office is 5 miles off trail Mon-Sat 10am-2pm. Mazama Village Store is closer to trail, 1mile, but limited options.
    Mile 1912: Shelter Cove Resort $5-10 (Oregon) I did not send a box here, but many do. Minimal supplies. 1 mile off trail.
    Mile 2002: Big Lake Youth Camp (Oregon) 1.5miles off trail. I did not send a box here. You can hitch to Bend or Sisters.
    Mile 2107: Timberline Lodge (Oregon) I did not send a box here. $5-10 collection fee. You can get a bus to Sandy, Oregon that has a Safeway & Grocery Outlet - oneway only $2!!
    Mile 2155: Cascade Locks (Oregon) I resupplied on the way here, there are limited options in grocery store. Post Office M-F 8:30am-1pm/2pm-5pm.
    Mile 2234: Trout Lake (Washington) - I sent a box to the General Store. Limited Options for resupply. Store holds packages for free. Very friendly town. 13miles off trail. Trail angel schedule for lifts.
    Mile 2303: White Pass (Washington) - I did not send a box here. A popular place to send a resupply is Kracker Barrell store. Collection fee around $5.
    Mile 2402: Snoqualmie Pass (Washington) - I sent a box to the Summit Inn where I stayed. Post Office limited hours M-F 10am-12pm.
    Mile 2476: Skykomish/Stevens Pass (Washington) - I sent a box to the Post Office M-F 11:30am-3:30pm - will not bounce boxes!! 15miles off trail
    Mile 2574: Stehekin (Washington) - I sent a box to the Post Office. M-F 10am-4pm. Expensive & Limited General Store. Last stop before Canada. Go to bakery!!!! 11miles off trail - bus service from bakery to Stehekin.

    Nicely done Tinkerbell !!!
    You know it wasn't till the very end of this video that I realized I missed your " gooood morning " ☺️😃
    Another thing to be thought about when it comes to resupply, is those first couple boxes sent out, you go pick them up and it's a real lift !!
    Kinda helps get you out of your head as they say 😉.
    Experienced hikers also use resupply boxes for other things. Things for amusement and fun on the trail. Like swapping out pinochle for Uno. That sort of thing, so think of your resupply boxes as more than just food stuff !!😃😁
    And remember to keep on rocking the free world ☺️ !!

    This is a really informative video, pitched just right. You should be proud. A year ago I was excited to see your videos where you were training on the moors for the PCT. An English lass from just across the Pennines! I followed you all the way. Now you're in the paper and you pop up on my PCT news feed. You're a media star!

      That is so lovely to hear, thank you! I think I was as surprised as anyone to see myself in the paper. Someone had interviewed me and I thought nothing of it as I hadn't heard back and then someone called me to say I was in the paper🤣 What PCT news feed did I pop up in?

    Absolutely the most useful resupply video anyone who has hiked the PCT has put out. Also, a lot of vegans can use this info. I know that there are few asking about eating vegan while long distance hiking and you've answered (probably) most of their questions. I've heard many stories about the VVR and the high cost ($30 to $40 to pick up a package is ridiculous; they aren't paying for the food in the box - only holding it for you) and would totally skip that town. Most enjoyed visiting it though, as far as I could see. Just not worth it too me. I answered a woman's question on a FB hiking group just a couple of days ago (before I saw this video) and recommended that she watch your videos to get an idea about eating vegan on trail (PCT). This video would answer all her questions. Not sure if she checked out your channel or not. I'll keep recommending you for info. Thanks for the upload. Cheers !

    I agreed with Catherine Di-Marco with 100%, You are so much organized and May i should say "you are the most organize person I never heard of" very best of details for places and post offices time to times including, stores hours open to end. This is a best information for all PCT-hikers. As always love and respect things you done. I am very happy and I hope all PCT-hikers out there keep and learn these tips from you before start a long trips. And if I may represent for all PCT-hikers, I would like to thank you so much for these videos and great advised going on the trails. We love you all. I am currently attending basic map and compass classes and go through every single step for prepare myself for the next PCT-hike. Again, we love you all.

    Wow! Thanks for the details! I've heard others talk about details of resupply, but this went deeper! You researched this so well! Also, I can imagine it must be weird to land in another country, deal with jet lag, and go shopping in a bunch of stores in, for you, a foreign country (maybe not _that_ different, but still, stores in different countries do things a bit differently). Many thanks for this video!

    Always pleasure to watch and fantastic information 😃. You are the princess of the PCT and the queen of all vegans 👑. Just remembered last year we were driving through Sonora Pass going for hikes to Lone Pine, Mammoth (all the good places) so I spotted two skinny backpackers (they were PCT hikers); I offered them what I had in the trunk of my car: a box of kiwis, fresh raspberries, blueberries, avocados, spinach, Hawaiian chips, half a gallon of carrot juice and mango/orange juice. They were going to Kennedy Meadows North for resupply and that amount of fresh healthy food put them in a total shock. It was such a happy moment for all of us 😍🥰😋

    Mary, always enjoy your videos. Just FYI about some of the locations you mentioned. Hiker Heaven and Casa de Luna are no longer operating. Also, Warner Springs may not get their lease renewed but of course the Post Office is still working. If anyone considers anything beyond the USPS they should research that carefully (as you mention). Your channel has helped me SOOOOOOOO much in planning my Section Hikes on the PCT here in Southern California. Your positive Cinderella/Tinkerbell type attitude inspires me. I guess that's because Cinderella dealt with Grumpy old men and Tink with boys who won't grow up, (something I resemble). Many blessings to you and Derek.

    Thank you SO much for doing this. Being vegan my biggest fear about that trail is just not being able to eat well, and the whole resupply box thing just overwhelmed me. Having this resource will be invaluable to me when I get planning my own (hopefully) PCT hike. I can't wait to see the next one about eating vegan on trail. It is so kind of you to take the time to put this out there for other people to make their planning process less stressful.

    Hi Mary,
    I am so glad you did this video. I am from Ireland and planning to through hike the PCT in 2021 and this information in invaluable. I am vegetarian and am very keen to eat healthily on the trail. I loved following your hike. Your attitude is a real inspiration. Take what comes and roll with it. (and how you seemed to smile through it all still baffles me!!!)
    I also bought myself a decent camera (my only luxury item) as I want to capture the images as best I can for me and my family. (Have not decided yet if I want the hassle of a vlog but that will answer itself in good time).

    I hadn't kept good notes and thought I had sent a box to Warner Springs, but didn't! I was able to get plenty of food from hiker boxes. Hiker boxes are full at the beginning areas of the PCT because people tend to usually oversupply. I learned later to keep my receipts from the Post Office so that I remembered where I had sent boxes.

    Tink, what was your longest stretch to make food last (how many days) before you could re-supply, and how did you manage the weight and bulk of that long a stretch? What were your favorite light-weight options? What are some recommendations in terms of best nutrition in small/light packages?

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  4 роки тому +1

      If I remember rightly it was about 9 days! To manage the weight I did eat a little more unhealthy and got ramen for my lunches to save some weight. I didn’t get backpacker meals for dinners, instead I got couscous and dehydrated beans. Snacks I just stick with bars mainly and didn’t carry out fresh vegetables. I knew as it was short term it would be okay. I made sure to take green superfood powder and dried fruits though, plus seaweed snacks, nuts and seeds.

    Lots of good information there, thank you very much for doing this Mary! It will be extremely helpfull next year, if all goes to plan.
    Now, do you have any tips for looking after your pack while shopping, or did you always have a motel room or the like, to store it in?
    I always find it a bit of a gamble to just leave it outside a store, and I don't really like to do it. One time I simply put my pack in the bottom rack of a shopping kart, and wheeled it around with me in the shop. Got some funny looks, but no one said anything, heh :)

    Question for next Q+A
    I am planning on not using boxes at all and buying what I can when I can ... is this sensible / possible ?

    Thanks for all the great info

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Steve, thanks for your question. It is certainly possible! I know a lot of hikers that never bothered with any boxes so it can be done. It just means you will have quite limited choice in some places and may pay high prices for some things in others, but if you don't mind that then it'll be a great experience not having to plan anything and have that extra freedom.

    I would think that the spreadsheet wouldn't have been a total waste of time because it looked to be a great framework for all the possibilities of resupplying.
    Myself not being vegan anymore but a very close vegetarian who doesn't eat added sugar or salt, I imagine without the next video coming out that the mailing of resupplies will have to be the most relied upon method eat on a thru hike to maintain a "special" diet.
    Thanks for the information!

    Thank you Mary! This is super helpful for me as another vegan Euro hiker hitting the trail March 23rd!
    I do still wonder... How much food to buy in San Diego? I really don't know what would be a good amount to buy 😅

      Not long now Johanna B!! I bet you are so excited! I know its such a hard thing to plan for. If I can give any advice about food at the beginning it would be this, buy what your current appetite is on a normal daily hike. From what I experienced, hiker hunger didn't kick in for about 3 weeks for me. If anything I lost my appetite at the beginning! So pack for normal hiking and an extra emergency bar each day 😁

    Hi Mary, how many days worth of food did you calculate for the first two resupply boxes you sent to Mt. Laguna and Warner Springs. How many miles per day did you project you might hike in the beginning? Did you send 4 boxes from San Diego before you left or just those first two? You said you planned for the first month. I'm thinking of doing the same. Thank you!

    Sanora Pass Resupply has gone out of business. They are currently liquidating their inventory and the website will be gone as well at some point. I had planned on using them as my resupply there. I did manage to purchase three cans of mountain house at a very price.

    Lots of collection fees... do you have to pay in cash? Do you have to pay VVR Ferry in cash? How much Cash would you recommend carrying?

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  4 роки тому

      No, usually you can pay on your card with the other groceries. At VVR you pay the ferry at their shop - I paid by card. I usually carried about $50 on me at all times, never more than $100 as you can pay with your card in most places.

    So you only stopped at Bishop and VVR(?)

      Hi Hiker John. As I explained at the beginning of the video and in the description, this video is where I sent or recommend sending boxes to, not where I did resupplies.

      Mary Mansfield it certainly was a "Bigfoot" 🤔 but you won't find any of those around these parts in UK.

    Another option for resupply information is Yogis PCT Handbook.
