That bear mug that Dylan is drinking from is from a shop called Ash and Griffin, who are based out of my home kingdom of Calontir! I hoard mugs and my Ash and Griffin mugs are some of my favorites!
Mr Dylan Thuras: You have done an excellent job! You have captured the true spirit of the event. An exciting but laid back gathering of people that are serious but tongue in cheek about the medieval time period...
Thank you sir. I went to my first Pennsic in 1982 when I was 17 years old. Went for 35 years straight, But after that missed about every other one due to health, and finance issues. I haven't attended in a few years now. This alternately hurt to see, but was also like an elixier of life. I know every place you showed. I know it's sounds, smells, how every bit feels, Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Well aren't you a joy. Thank you for 'getting' us and showing your own enjoyment. You're welcome back anytime, I can make sure to save space for you in our camp if need be.
Nicely done! Best piece on the SCA that I've seen in a long time. You were sincere and dove right in and experienced new things. None of that "oh look at the oddballs, hahaha," that unfortunately is the tone to a lot of pieces. And to Dylan; good job on that fight! Not bad for your first time in helm. Hope you can do more sometime. (Earna, heavy fighter, Northshield)
I always look forward to working here every year Pennsic 50 was my 5th year working in the store And I'll be back every year until I can't no more I love everyone who comes to this event, it's so much fun seeing so many people from around the world just ENJOY themselves and their passions for 2 weeks ❤❤ see you all next year
It was nice to see that the brewery owner appreciates our presence in the town. I've never been to downtown Slippery Rock; may have to go check out the actual town the next time my Pennsic isn't heavily booked with plans.
Awesome. I've spent 25 summers there. And YES...the restaurants, laundries, and grocery stores are freguently full of people in medieval garb doing their modern chores. We car pool into town (parking) The townspeople are LOVELY. We get questions, sure, but honest questions. Most think it sounds like fun, and have seen the thousands of tents. We CAN get them in for the DAY; if they are properly dressed. So, locals CAN visit if they hook up with a member outside the event. If they pay the day fee, dress correctly, and hang with their newfound friends. Just so you know! We paid a year ahead of time for our campsite, but day tickets ARE issued. I've fought; I've danced and sang, studied ancient runes and how to make soap, and navigate by the stars. People are building ovens for bread; teaching how to produce cloth from flax or wool, there are walks for herbal medical education. People discuss shipbuilding; and make mock ships at the events. What does your medieval persona WANT to do? It is there. I enjoy shrugging of the troubles of modern life for a week or so each year to renew my spirit. And YES by the end of two weeks, I am ready to return to my mattress, air conditioner, fridge, and shower. We appreciate it more when we decide to forgo those things for a bit.
Unfortunately there is not a day rate for Pennsic. Everyone must pay for either one week or two, but those rates are still quite reasonable considering what you get.
Dylan, As my barony's throw weapons champion, the look of joy on your face when you hit that center shot is something we all feel with you! Come back anytime and you can use my mouse tomahawks at anytime! *ps I was there when you were throwing*
2023 was my 28th Pennsic. I got choked up at several points in this video - it really perfectly captures the event! "What I did on my summer vacation (every year)" 😎
i drove past this for 20 years going to my Irish family reunion in Slippery Rock. i loved seeing it for two reasons one it meant i was only 5 min from my family. two i wasn't the only person in the world that loved this time period. thank you all for being you, you impacted me more then you will ever know.
OMG!! I'm so honored to be in this video (15:37). I love being able to get deep into my African heritage, and being a part of this AMAZING festival. I can't wait to go again😁
I'm one of the folks who run Circus of the Damned. North Country is amazing! I'm so happy they mentioned them! Our camp visits at least once a year during Pennsic!
I am 61 and have yet to see a Pennsic. I first heard of Pennsic when I was 12 years old and read about it in my local (St. Paul) newspaper. I hope to visit a friend in PA and day-trip it. I fear the oppressive heat, but I must do this before it is too late or I will regret it forever.
It can be a bit pricey today trip it as you pay by the week. But if camping is not your thing you can stay in some of the local hotels reasonably priced and not that far a commute
I highly reccomend it. There's lots of places to get shade, and an indoor space (internet cafe) with air conditioning. The food stores are good too, I reccomend Kafe Merhaba, a middle eastern lounge.
I have been lucky enough to go to Pennsic Twice. 2018 and 2011. Both times were absolutely phenomenal times with a LOT of great friends. If you've never been, you have to go at least ONCE.
Far and away, the best, or most valuable thing at pensic are the people that seriously study, and reproduce the arts or material culture of the time period based on/ using actual academic research.
I was at Pennsic 16 - yes I am old. It is one of the most impactful things I have ever done. Sadly I have not made the effort to return since then. If you have the chance to go, take it. Get involved in the SCA, get your costume, persona, armor (if you want to fight) etc ready and then experience it first hand. You won't forget it I am sure :) Lord Lachlan MacFionnlaigh Macleoid
What a wonderful vid! You captured all that is good and right about the SCA in general, and Pennsic in particular. It is HOME for many of us - the place where we feel our most authentic selves come alive. We hope you return, and share time, space, food and drink. And tell us of your NSTIW adventures. (No S*** There I was .....)
Emilie literally spelled out her name and the editor got it wrong 😂 (I had to) Other than the dude with the elf ears, very nice mini documentary. Thank you.
I think the folks with the elf ears might disagree. There is space for everyone at Pennsic, it's not just hardcore medievalists its whimsy and fairy folk too. I'm happy they were included.
@@BrigitofBergentalI'd there no chance people in the old days ever played dress-up as other fantasy creatures? That's how I view the folks with the ears when I'm there.
@@BrigitofBergentalYes, technically it is an SCA event, true. But so what? Like NekoMako said, there's room for everybody. If someone wants to wear elf ears and fairy wings and it makes them happy, they're having fun, not hurting anyone, why not. And keep in mind that Coopers was first used by non SCA people who invited us to attend, not the other way around.
I like the fact there is less video of Pennsic than more, but I can see why people like to film the event. Sometimes I do wish they would ask. It is a private event.
GEN'ICHI OF THE HAEL IVE BEENNIN THE SCA FOR 7 YEARS 2 PENNSICS AND THUS VIDEO IS BY FSR THE BEST ONE EVER THANK YOU....BTW MY WIFE IS IN IT AT 9 MINS ISH DANCING IN THW MARKET
I remember the first time I picked up a kolinsky stable, I wondered what the big deal was. It was better, but not THAT much better, right? Then I went back to a synthetic and immediately realized how much better my life had become.
I live less than a mile from Cooper Lake Campground (what the place is actually called). Now I have not lived here my whole life but my family goes back to the 18th century, as I believe the third settler in the township that Coopers Lake is in (Worth Township). I was always told that the people of Pennsic don't want the locals around, and that we were not welcome. I actually drive past there all the time except for that few weeks in the summer when I go around a different way. I had to chuckle a bit when the guy from North Country Brewery called it Moraine Lake. My grandfather was born in a house that would now be under Lake Arthur which is in Moraine State Park. I mean I guess Pennsic is good for the local economy as Coopers Lake makes a killing off of it, or at least I hope someone is for all of the inconvenience it causes the local community. I think many of the locals think the Pennsic People are a bit crazy and we do have a few nicknames for them. I am sure like any group the community is nice and they do enjoy leaving their real lives to pretend to be someone else somewhere else. My advice is to just be nice to the locals who pay the taxes that make your weeks vacation run so smoothly.
I'm sorry if the people who told you we don't want locals around, had a bad experience. It can't be further from the truth. We are a welcoming group to all and love to show around new folks and share what we do. This video demonstrates that very attitude. All we ask is if you go to one of our events, you make an attempt at medieval wear. There are locals who already are a part of this community.
Greetings. I live the same neighborhood as well and I’ve been going to Pennsic of 20 years please allow me to attempt to explain this misunderstanding. Pennsic is the largest yearly event for an organization called the SCA. I often compare the SCA to something like a medieval themed scouting program for all ages, but different. The SCA has smaller day long or weekend long events that happen every single weekend all over the country, but Pennsic is sort of like our international convention. The small events are always meant to be welcoming to new people interested in what we do. You can usually show up right off the street and check it out, but Pennsic, while still welcoming, has additional challenges due to its size, duration, and scope. Pennsic is a private event that anyone, local or not, is welcome to join, but it’s not exactly “open to the public”. It’s an event where participants are invited to be active in the experience, must have an attempt at appropriate costuming and the event pricing reflects either a one or two week stay. I think the misnomer that locals aren’t welcome at Pennsic comes from people who don’t realize what Pennsic actually is. I’m sure every year there is someone who sees it from the highway and shows up expecting a Renaissance Fair and then gets to leave disappointed when they are stopped at the gate. It's just not something designed as a day trip for the casual spectator. My advice to anyone interested in Pennsic is to use the SCA website to find their local group and check out some local meetings and events and go from there. That’s really the best way to get involved in the hobby.
Those weapons are rattan not foam. Not that I have anything against foam fighting or Buhurt fighting for that matter. The variety of medieval combat sports have grown dramatically and there is room for every fighter to find their place. Foam fighting and steel fighting are their own sports and if I ever ever want to try fighting with their standards I can always do it at an event designed for that.
