Byrne can actually sound a lot more like Chamberlin than I thought. Surprising, given the Teargarden recordings we've been giving so far. No one can fill Chamberlin's shoes, but I'm glad we at least have this guy. He's got skill.
That kid has a huge Chamberlin influence along with the jazz chops (and of course Jimmy himself was a jazz drummer....) I can see why Billy "picked" him.
Grande Mike
haha I suppose my statement did go alittle overboard. I'm just a little mad that yet another original member of Smashing Pumpkins is replaced, and sadly replaced by a 19 year old drummer. It would be really awesome to have the original pumpkins back together before 2012.
@thisxgreatxdecay Certainly - I along with most SP fans at first was a bit like "Wow he is a bit young and inexperienced!" - but with this video and the record day show they did he has really come along.............will be exciting to see how he develops - hope Billy keeps him on.
@Ksimp9 im afraid that just isn't going to happen. each member had their reasons for leaving. Besides james and darcy weren't the reason the band was what it was in the early days. just check out hummer at Terminal 5 in new york 2010 if you're still on the fence about mike, the new drummer, really amazing stuff. That said there's no reason to dislike the pumpkins new line-up, because they're is making incredible music, waiting to be discovered by anyone chooses to give it a try.
@roelran The quotation marks were attempting to imply that (judging from the auditions in this video anyway), there wasn't much of a choice. Poor attempt at humor on my part.
Billy Corgan probably thinks the "great killer of art is the voice that comes in and says that's not good enough or that's not interesting enough" because that's probably any voice that hears any of the garbage he has made in the past 14 years.
geez man Id like to see that kid jam out on drums, because just from what Ive seen im probably a better drummer than him. i should be in the smashing pumpkins.
"The idea of where ideas come from...it starts with the idea of why we even bother to express an idea..."
I love how nervous Mikey is when he's talking to Billy.
I want to meet Billy some day
How the hell does he make such good music with that voice, it works so good, WTF
That drummer is fantastic.
Billy's amazing. I love the way he expresses himself.

"That's not gonna work, Billy." HAHAHAHA David is such a mensch!
I always thought Jimmy Chamberlain was irreplaceable, but Mike Byrne is actually a really awesome fit for Smashing Pumpkins. He sounds great!

Lol, 4:30 John Dolmayan from SOAD xD

Thanks this was awesome!!
I imagine Billy at 80 years old standing like 1:00 all of the time ... he's always been so hunchy lol
@jonkbaby It's a clip of the Pastichio Medley from the Zero EP if I'm not mistaken.
Wow, Tear is such a better song than Eye, and in context of Lost Highway it makes sense too. It really is one of the best on Adore.

Rewatching this video 2 years later- I can see why Billy went with Mike. Dang man! Also, want to know if 6:23-6:37 is a real song
