      Old tires leach petrochemicals, rubber compounds and all kinds of heavy metals (including mercury and lead) into surrounding soil and groundwater. A tire, even partially, submerged in water will kill most aquatic life within weeks. Plants will absorb these pollutants, so eating anything grown next to an old tire is literal poison. Don't even use the plants for composting for the same reason.
      Just like re-using old yoghurt/butter/milk/... plastic pots will leach BPA and micro-plastics after a year of exposure to water, oxygen and especially sunlight. Re-using/saving money is great. But keep in mind there is more to consider than saving money or waste.

    Great video. A brilliant earth ship brick and cool workout at the same time. I loved the hug at the end lol

    The vibe of this video is so wholesome and relaxing! At first I figured I would skim quickly through it, but quickly found it captivating. I hope this bodes well for me enjoying the process when I start to build, lol 😆 Thanks for the great video, I'm stoked to check out your channel!

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge and an excellent way to use an old tyre. If I may suggest that using a suitable mortar would save your fingers from enviable injuries.
    Especially if you intend to run a wall of tyres. 😊

    As someone who is currently doing the exact same thing but for 10 acres, surrounding the borders of my property. I am 6 ft 1 in and weigh 250 pounds. I find it scientifically impossible for anyone to explain to me how a 8 lb sledge Hammer being swung at half swing can generate close to 100 lb of force, whereas me stepping on the same dirt I have 250 lb of gravity.

    • @AlexEarthshipLeeor
      @AlexEarthshipLeeor  10 місяців тому

      Maybe u dont need 100lb of force to pound a tyre with this technique. the final results r same, rock hard tyres ;)

    I pound tires all day and average 20 minutes per tire with only a 9 lb. sledge hammer. Moisten all the dirt first. Always overfill with dirt. Pound all around. add rocks near the end if available. Let the weight do the work. Go easy on your elbows!

      Nice! Thanks for the tips! Yes ive also i pounded the traditional way.. this is a nice option for people who dont like the long big sledge so much.. most of it i was sitting on the floor ;)
      Do u build earthships?

  • @johnhess351

    there has to be an easier way than using your bare hands on hundreds of tires individually to fill in 20 minutes per tire
    .

      there are so many ways,, this is just one.. and its REALLY easy this way.. u can just use a mid sized sledge but some people dont like using them so much as it takes much more force to compact with one.. my method uses so little power from me but still NAILS the rock hard tyre that will last 1000s of years

    Wouldn’t it be easier to cut out the sideways?

    • @AlexEarthshipLeeor
      @AlexEarthshipLeeor  4 місяці тому

      simple answer is no.. the whole idea is to get as much mass as we can compacted into the tire.. its REALLY hard to cut them, and if you do you lose the strength... of the tire itself and the ability of the sidewall to really hold all of that dirt in with 90% compaction

    I have easier method. At first, wear gloves, your hands will thank you.
    Then, instead of doing it with hands, buy boots with a steel cap. Kick the soil with a boot, instead of hands. Later, use pickaxe to pry out the tire, while kicking the soil with your boot. Secondary advantage of this method is, you press the soil into the tire naturally by standing on it, with each step.

    I see you do alot of hand manipulation of the dirt. Why not wet the soil and make it a paste? I think it would pack easier in the tire and there wouldn't be any voids. If you want it packed enough to swell the tire then add more mud then lay a sheet of plywood over the tire and stomp on the wood. It should force the mud into the tire. The way you're doing it looks like alot of overkill.

      That’s a great question and there’s a few answers..
      firstly we really need to avoid adding any water because the whole approach here is that we put as much thermal mass in as possible, and that we do not rely on binding with Water to get any strength because that is very weak and prone to cracking, and also when it dries the water evaporates and the tire then becomes a bit soft, and u get a far less resilient structure.
      Also, By the time you start playing with water and mixing etc, u may as well have just used the sledgehammer…
      there are many ways to do this, and this particular video is demonstrating a method that is very easy in terms of needing strength and ability to use very small tools.
      It’s perfectly suited to older or younger people or those with any physical issues.
      Also, the majority of the compaction needs to happen in the sides of the tires, not in the middle and the only way to really get that done properly is by pounding to the side of not straight down.. the list goes on!! The idea that you suggested just be a real mess and it really wouldn’t provide anything like the compaction you get with a sledgehammer or the approach I’ve shown here..
      we need 90% plus compaction to do this properly. You would get about 40% compaction using the method you’re suggesting, which is not be sufficient for a long-term strong home…

      @@AlexEarthshipLeeor im going to have to agree with the rude guy above. The most efficient way to pack a tire is with a tamper. Ill fill the tire then tamper it down again usually just twice. The whole process doesnt take more than 5 min. I do however remove a face from one of sides to make the process easier. I also run bolts through the sides so as to kinda fasten the tire to the tires next to it.

    • @AlexEarthshipLeeor
      @AlexEarthshipLeeor  Рік тому +2

      @@alejandrosantana5693 its ok for retaining walls but not for buried earthship walls.. they are very soft like that and over time can subside. The only way to get them rock hard is to fill the sides, that is the rule for Earthships at least.. but yes ive also done them in 5 minutes when i do retaining walls..
      Also, its worth noting that i am putting around three times more dirt (thermal mass) in the tyres by compacting it well. This means three times as much thermal performance when it gets cold, which is really what we want...
      As i say " Every tyre We Pound Today Is Wood We don't have to chop and burn tomorrow..."

  • @aborayan6831

    The idea of the tires is very stupid, and it is the reason why the idea of the earth ship has not spread..and I expect many people when they try to fill one tire..they did not complete the rest.
