    Saved me a trip to auto place. Worked great. I was repairing my son's car for college. Definitely worked better to heat the button instead of around it. I would heat and nudge with razor scraper. I put a warm washcloth on outside in same area since it's cold outside today so it wouldn't be shock to the windshield. No damage to windshield and repair is done. Thanks for the video!

    This really works, i just finished doing it. Just go buy a torch lighter from gas station and heat up just in the middle then it will fall right off. Thank to this dude..

    Got it done. Any disposable lighter will work. Tapping it lightly with a putty knife sideways for about a minute till it came loose. Thnx again.

    Many thanks! I was a little worried about using a lighter since your windshield in the video does crack a little. I'm guessing it's just feathering out from the crack that was already there, though. I let my car sit in the sun for a bit to heat it up, used a grill lighter for about 10 seconds, a pair for grill tongs, and it just took a twist to remove it. Super easy! Thanks for doing this video!

    Very helpful, thank you. normal lighter for 20sec or so worked well for me, and eliminated worry about cracking windshield.

    Worked like a charm, got my bic lighter, set flame only on metal part, 3 times, each around 30 to 45 seconds, wiggled it gently with channel lock pliers, third time center piece came off after glue melted, thanks

      Me too. Must have done this a dozen times in the 20 years I owned my truck. But for some reason I glued it on backward this last time. Gonna have to get a butane lighter.

    Mine finally worked by being out in the sun 30 mins @90° before starting. Had started w/ butane lighter but the heat comments got rethinking. Shifted to regular Bic. 30 secs w/ maybe 10 mins in between. 3 cycles then 2 VERY LIGHT taps from side w/ the SMALLEST of screwdriver & a ball-peen. Glue had softened and it came off slowly, much better than "cracking" off. .... I want to thank everybody for their comments. This was a good post.

    I used an 80 Watt soldering iron, held it on the button for a couple of minutes and then tapped the button with the wooden end of a hammer, came right off; the windshield was cold too around 45 degrees Fahrenheit. I do not recommend applying any flame as the risk of damaging the glass is great. Hopoe this helps.

    Also if you wanted to replace a rear view mirror couldn't you just take the old mirror off the socket that connects to the mirror itself and slash it with a new one into the same socket? That way it will save time to do all that heating and gluing removal to remove the whole mirror including the socket.

      Dave S. Thats not the only reason for this. Sometimes the fucking mirror falls off or the button gets replaced backwards

    The reason I want to do this is to raise it higher, so the rear view mirror doesn't block my view as much.
    How bout a propane torch?
    How's the chance of cracking the windshield due to the flame heat?

    as you say it wouldn't hurt the glass you clearly see the glass crack even further. heating glass is dangerous especially for amateurs!!!

    • @michaelpowell2291
      @michaelpowell2291  8 років тому +2

      Yes, this was a old windshield that was already cracked. This is a how to video.
      As for heating glass, I have seen car's sitting out in the sun get hotter than using some heat from a lighter. I assume you take the bus everywhere you go or walk. "heating glass is dangerous especially for amateurs!!!" That is one of the dumbest things someone have ever posted on one of my videos.

    • @phiksit
      @phiksit 2 роки тому

      I had to glue a button back on in cold weather. I had the "bright idea" of using a 250 watt heat lamp to help the glue dry. It didn't crack the glass but the plastic laminate layer bubbled.

    can u just use a lighter

    • @michaelpowell2291
      @michaelpowell2291  9 років тому

      Yes you can use a BIC Lighter and I have in the past. It will take a little more time to get the butten off the windshield using a BIC Lighter. You can use a Jet Flame Butane Cigarette Torch Lighter Like this one from Amazon. amzn.to/1Nf73wt

      Michael Powell I would stick to recommending the lighter. Some of those little butane torches push out some serious thermal heat and are dangerous overkill for such a delicate operation for the inexperienced where one should be taking their time instead of rushing the process.

    Why you bothering to scrape the glue off if you just got to junk the windshield

  • @rogernalan9324

    Haha "it won't really hurt the glass" your windshield couldn't get much worse. I have a new windshield that the factory put the wrong button on. This method is too risky with a brand new windshield in my opinion. But if your windshield is already shattered just use a hammer.
