If the king moves to the left, you can check again with Rg1+ and now, no matter where the king moves, you can take the white rook with the black rook. I assume the idea was to move the rook on the same file as the white and black king, then move the white king and try to give some checks, but I guess the opponent missed that the king can't move from the file after the promotion.

God. Can people stop legit accusing the player of cheating? They weren't. They were just playing heavy on Rosen's time. It's a tactic you can employ in classical games to force inaccuracies. It was Nepo's tactic after his loss of Game 6 in the WCC.
I analyzed the entire game with Stockfish. Virtually none of the opponent's moves were the best move and most weren't even the second best move, and the ones that were the best move were either in the opening which isn't super surprising if you know your theory, obvious retakes, and just common sense moves like moving the rook to the 7th rank.
The long pause after Qe1 was clearly the opponent taking a moment to compose themselves because they missed the tactic. Nobody using an engine would spend close to a minute calculating an only move. Cheaters take around 3-7 seconds to make their moves CONSISTENTLY. Also, this isn't a case of intermittent cheating because there were no brilliancies played along with major inaccuracies by the opponent which is what would you'd expect from somebody with the aid of an engine.
    Be better.

    • @MelbourneChessCoach

@@MelbourneChessCoach Cool. So your whole criticism of my post was that I said "tactic" instead of "candidate move?" Like why even bother posting that?
I'm guessing his opponent didn't see that the knight that jumped to g5 was protecting the e1 square from the queen check, probably thought he lost the initiative or perhaps miscalculated, then spent the time recalculating the f5, exf6, and nxf6 line with the queen on e1 rather than a5. There's no controversy here and the player wasn't cheating. That was the point of my post.

Yea, but he also may have just not gotten caught.
It looks like he's playing with a mix of cheating and his real honest moves. Thats also probably why he lost against such a strong player like Eric.
But there are so many weird moves he made, and way too quickly given the high level of theory.
My assumption is he likely plays with an engine early on, then plays a few moves of his own here and there, and in general trying to play decently fast so that his opponents go into time trouble.
With only a decent level of ability, this strategy of perfect and decent moves at a fast play speed would be enough to beat quite a bit of pretty good players.
Plus, his classical rating has a question mark which means he likely doesnt have many classical games and generally plays faster time formats. So this would also make sense with his speed of playing.
Now, thats not to say he DEFINITELY is a cheater. But his execution of such a niche opening position was far too good for a 2100-2200, especially with him blitzing out moves. And some of the tactics he found, he found WAY too quickly, while also taking like a minute to play an only move. His level of play just seems way too weird.

Honestly the dead giveaway that this guy *isn't* cheating (apart from the Computer graph which shows this quite evidently) is that he is using a minute on an only-move. Ya really think stockfish took a minute to suggest the only move possible to be made?
Only way for this guy to be cheating is if he makes conscious blunders throughout the game and is far out of the normal cheating time-usage behaviour on purpose. At that point you're just looking at an indistinguishable mess between cheating players and normal players (especially since he didn't make the best moves after blundering in order to regain the advantage but... blundered more.) so what the lichess mods, and I for that matter, believed is that this guy is not cheating.
