Couple of points I might not have hit on hard enough in this video. While the overall power isn't what I was aiming for, the curve is WAY better. At around 5k I went from 12hp to 22hp! This thing actually snaps now. Look at 9:19 to see the dyno's compared. At 12:54 you can really see how that plays out in the real world. The engine is physically the same now as a CBR300 motor other than gearing and clutch. However there is something I did overlook that's holding it back. It's an easy fix too, I'll have a video on that once I've experimented with it. Also I bet if dyno'd it with the SM wheel it would be 2 or even 3 hp higher. It was done with a MotoZ tire (very heavy), heavy duty tube, rim lock, and balanced (took 6oz!). That's a pretty hefty wheel! But even now the bike is a lot nicer to ride. Throttle response is a ton better. But I will keep going, I am the guinea pig for this as far as I'm concerned. If it just crap I'll tell you, or if we can make it better but it cost a ton of money I'll tell you. I'm just trying to see if this platform is worth it or not.

Been following this...really appreciate the effort. I don't have dyno data but after an ECU tune, full Yoshimura exhaust, and high flow air filter...she runs a lot better, way better and smoother throttle response. I think a proper 350cc big bore kit is exactly what this bike needs. Here's hoping.

Went through something similar with my WR250R years ago. In the end I gained just shy of 2hp but in my case the little bit of bottom end I had was even less which didn't work well for the riding I was doing. After playing around with it for a couple of years I pretty much put it back to stock and left it at that.
I learned that these Performance Parts companies are really selling parts and not necessarily performance.

i got the same exhaust(thanks to you, it was so much cheaper then a yoshi and sounds awesome). and the stage 1 550 tune. and i only removed the backfire screen on my 300 rally. and it feels so different. it used to have a little lag in the throttle and sometimes almost bog. now it is there instantly . also now it pulls all the way from 0-100 km no problem. it no longer stalls when you take of randomly from a stop sign. it was such a great improvement. dont get me wrong these are all nitpicky things. the bike is great stock. but just better now lol. it was well worth the money spent. even if the numbers dont show a massive increase. how it feels to me is more important .

Hey Jake. I own a 2018 250L that has been converted to all CBR 300 parts: crank, piston, balancer, cams flywheel, ecu. And, a Power Commander V with Autotune (wideband O2 sensor). What I found is that I had to delete the oem O2 sensor (narrow band) because the factory ecu may have been trying to undo the afr I was telling the PCV to run the motor at. It was as if the settings were going towards stock the longer I left a tune in.
So, with the factory O2 out of the way, and a new Power Commander O2 bung welded in, my engine runs at whatever air fuel ratio I please. Once the tune has been optimized, you pull the Autotune O2 sensor out and now there is nothing in the header pipe and flows better. These motors also love some timing advance. Make sure you tell the tuner to add some in when on the dyno.
I also have been in touch with AH, and purchased/installed his +2mm piston. While it lasted, my bike felt like a DRZ w/a 3x3 and a rejetted carb. It was absolutely awesome. I would try it again but money is tight. The machine shop I used may have bored my cylinder on the tight side and the piston was damaged after 1200 miles. Oh well, my fault, my problem.
Overall, it is a great bike and will keep it a 286 with some solid head work and a matching tune. If I get the chance I will get another piston from AH but for now it is a true do-all that greatly benefits from head work and a tune.
Great vids. Keep it up 👍

The bike doesn't come lean from the factory . The bike has the most economical setting you can get from a 300 cc engine . The amount of air allowed in with the amount of gas going in keep the engine at its coolest temp possible .
Its only when people altered the air intake to allow more air in that causes the ( dangerous way , toasted exhaust, crispy exhaust valve and general wear increase ) . Notice that he said in breathing better meaning opening up the air box to allow more in , is when all the crispy exhaust comes from .
If you just except the power the way it comes from the factory you will get 70 to 75 mpg . If you start adding more fuel and more air your going to burn more gas faster .
Why in the world would you want to decrease the mpg ? You are going to go from 75 mpg down to 50 or less and for what ?
As far as running hotter any time you add more gas and more air at the same time you are going to make the engine hotter just think about it . If you think you're are going make your engine last longer by burning more gas at a hotter temp you are badly mistaken .
If you leave the bike stock its going to run the coolest it can possibly run so it will last a lot longer leaving it stock . Just except the power the bike gives you and enjoy the 75 mpg and go 255 mile between fill ups and have fun along the way .

    - All the mods in the world won’t make it not a 300 class engine

Good luck with finding the 30bhp that should be in a tuned CBR300 motor, I'm sure you'll get there before any big bore or stroker kits are needed.
I've had a similar long journey getting an old 1980's 125 trail bike from 18bhp to 24.6bhp so far, and when I finally get it over 25bhp at the tyre ill say it's done, and fit a bigger engine to do the same mods to that too.

I'm sure that the same power is available to this modified CRF as a similarly modified CBR 300 would have on the same Dyno/day. Maybe Jake should look for some tuned CBR Dyno charts with the same sorts of modifications, which Id guess would be around 29-30bhp and what Id hoped to see in this video. I would also check the part numbers on the fuel injector and throttle body to make sure they are definitely the same as CBR parts. The issue looks to be in the tuning as I don't think the after tuning Dyno charts are possible with a 300cc engine. I.e making the same power at much lower rpm and over a wide rev range with next to no change in peak. It doesn't really add up?

Still confused on the results, because the CRF300L with the Thailand ECU supposedly make 30hp vs 27 everywhere else in the world.

  • @Firestorm637
    @Firestorm637 2 роки тому +1

Most inexpensive mods you feel it in a snappier throttle response. Even expensive mods will not cut 0-60 secs in half. I am old enough now and spent enough on mods that just buy them with the stock bike from factory. The future is locked ECU’s, proprietary tools and scanners. Too expensive or software dependent for backyard or small shop mechanics to modify or repair. Many Cars out of warranty too expensive to repair cuz complexities of engine. Electric is the future as plug and play vs repair.

That was the unit of how it was measured before so I needed to do it that way at the end. I own a 450L and I have ridden both. My thoughts are if you want powerful, fast bike get the 450L. People will say you need a vortex to feel the power to "uncork" it and no you don't the bike is powerful enough without the ECU. The 300L is smooth power good for technical trails more like a beginner bike. The suspension on the 450L is way better. So you pay what you get.

Hey, I would degree the cams to make sure they match the CBR specs, what if the CRF timing marks on the flywheel are different the the CBR? Symptoms look like an advanced intake.
Since you have the power vision can you see or log the manifold pressure sensor? If it is reading close to atmospheric at WOT then you don't have an intake restriction problem.
Anybody mentioning 35 HP needs to put the crack pipe.
Any side by side off road suspension comparisons to other dual purpose bikes, I love the suspension upgrade.

Engine mods are the most expensive mods vs suspension stuff. It takes hundreds air thousand to make big horsepower. Another reason buy the horsepower stock from the factory. These Harley guys Buy an expensive Harley and need a stage 2-4 to up the power that should be from the factory. Of course, not the case with the new generation of Harley’s Pan America, Sportster S, Nightster.. they all have power to weight ratios more than Harley’s CVO’s.
