When Should You Use and When To NOT Use Teflon Tape On Your Plumbing Water Connections
John shares many common plumbing connections and talks about the times you need thread tape or Teflon tape for your water line connections.
www.weekendhand...
John, you are the first guy I found that not only explains how to do something, but also why. You make us think instead of mimicking like robots. I can now analyze proper seal method. I have been hunting around for a correct answer and your assistance is dead on to answer my sought after question! Keep up the great work. I will be checking your other posts.
This is the only video I found showing WHY and WHEN to use Teflon tape. Thank you John Young. This video is comprehensive and invaluable.
Thanks. Regarding braided supply lines (segment ends at 8:56), would the wrench-tightened end use teflon tape, or is it unnecessary? I'm replacing a toilet supply line. The original connection at the valve end did not have teflon tape. Thank you.
Great explanation of everything. I've been doing carpentry work since hurricane Katrina. As a Young Man. This is one of the best explanations I've ever heard for these connections. You may have to change your channel from the weekend handyman, to the best handyman on UA-cam. Great job 👍!!
Thank you for your help and for imparting your wisdom. This video of yours helped my small project. Thank you again.
It's really important to apply your Teflon tape in a clockwise direction which coincidently is the same way you thread on most of your fittings.. If you apply the tape in an anticlockwise direction it will unravel as you screw on the fitting which will render it useless
With the open end facing you, CLOCKWISE 👍🏼
Just saying
If i am still having a leak in the sink connection after using teflon tape should I use dope/putty?
thanks for the breakdown! my dad puts teflon tape on everything, so now I get to learn him something
Thank you for helping me, your better at explaining than my father, 3 hours of back and fourth for a sink leak
This is what I was looking for. Some of my friends were saying that they put teflon tape AND tow, even if they had a gasket with a rubber seal in it.
I never understood it as I always relayed only on the rubber seal and had no issue with it whatsoever.
I suggest to begin the wrapping on the threads furthest from the pipe end so the tapered build up of tape goes smaller nearer the pipe end (which is a tapered thread also). Then as the pipes are connected they seal tighter with each turn. This tip applies to larger diameter pipes because they have a longer thread than your tape width (typically).
Great video. You presented a lot of different examples.
When you have PVC and there is a cap that screws into it like on a "T" would you use pipe tape for that?
The interesting thing for me about this video was the realization that many of us have been doing home handyman (handyperson?) projects for long enough that it didn't even occur to us that someone might consider using pipe thread tape/sealants on non-threaded fittings. This was an excellent video for the first time plumbing handyman, obviously not for someone who has done this sort of thing before.
What about brass SAE threads for a fuel line with a flair fitting? I have heard that you do not want to use teflon tape on Brass SAE threads...can you explain why or why not you would use teflon tape on brass flair fittings for fuel lines say diesel...Thanks...Capt. Greg
Thanks for the info! It was just what I needed as I took a break from working under my kitchen sink. Also learned I have been wasting a lot of time with taping my garden hoses -good to know if winter ever leaves...
We have a sink end that we have a Pur water filter on it started spraying. We think the threads are the issue as it worked previously fine and won’t not spray now with 3 different filters. Can I use Teflon tape to help in this situation?
I have a 1 inch cold water supply line attaching to the well casing Male pvc to female metal I didnt tighten it quite enough and I have a small pinhole air leak where the threads meet the metal. I cant tighten it because everything else is glued. What can I do without taking everything apart?
John! Great to see you here doing this - what a cool surprise 🙂
I have a sink I’m trying to connect, there’s a 1/2 pvc fip and I’m trying to thread a 1/2 mip brass connection, do I use Teflon tape or is that only for metal to metal connections? Do I need a sealant?
Hei! Like the way you explain everything! About the kitchen sink drain pipe - could teflon tape be used if the plastic nut came loose? I know you said not to use where there is a gasket, but what about this case? Thank you!
Great explanation! Thank you so much
Good video is pipe dope as good as teflon tape ?
What about the brass on brass temperature mixing valve for the shower. Not the supply lines but rather the valve itself. It was leaking and I cleaned the threads and used Teflon tape. There was an oily residue in the threads.
Can you use Teflon tape for washing machine and dryer hose? There was 1 UA-camr that used threading for them and most don’t use it. I just want to prevent any leaks since we just had a huge leaks from our washer and we are about to hook them back up.
I think you should look inside the hose, if it has rubber gasket, you don't need teflon tape. I think for washer/drier, it's quite easy when moving the hoses to make the end rotate a bit, since rubber gasket makes it easy to undo, so from time to time you need to tighten them up a bit.
You know, safety checks when starting the appliance.
Well done, John. Do you need teflon tape on a male to female NPT connection (brass to brass, nylon to brass). Do you need Teflon Tape on a male to female NPT to NPTF or NTPF to NTPF?
Brilliant explanation for do it yourselvers especially on situations involving fittings with Internal Gaskets
Is teflon tape needed in union coupling, and why?
Great video and advice thank you. Is that a Pecan Tree over your left shoulder in the yard? It reminds me of the one that growed in my grandma's yard when I was a boy.
Great video! Thank you
I needed some clarification beyond the scope of this video but really enjoyed it watching it anyway
It's very good information for homeowners
How bout the braided steel line that goes from sink valve to the shank on the water facet/fixture
Great video, thanks. One question… I was watching some British man connecting his water pump for a koi pondn of course, using teflon tape on the threads. He went around those threads about 10 times and then went around the opposite direction a few times. A little excessive I believe. So, what is maximum number of times one should go around the threads?
Only go to the right with the the threads and 3-4 is good. 5-6 is max.
Hi, I have an old lead outlet pipe on my bath and this is connected to the trap waste via a plastic screw pipe type joint. I have had to replace the waste and overflow and in doing so have caused the connection at the lead pipe to weep. Would ptfe tape help to seal this? I'm not sure as the lead pipe doesn't have a screw thread, its just pushed into the plastic connector and siliconed, but the silicone isn't adhering to the lead very well, hence the weeping. Can you advise a fix on this please?
This was literally perfect.
What about flare connections in natural gas fittings?
Amen great video one thing that you could not talk about that. I think could be important and great information to some people. Is? The color of deflaunted yjuice based on what material is in the pipe so if it's water Gas or oxygen.
With water you'd just use white Teflon tape.
Uses The yellow tape for gas lines iv also seen Orange.
And green is used for oxygen lines and medical gases.
Sort of useful information. But actually it is the best (edit information on this specific subject) that i have come across thus far on this channel so I can't criticize.
Wow! So well explained. Thank you!!!
Hello John I have the exact same main water line for under my kitchen sink the braided supply line with the white plastic screw cap you were holding but when I connect the faucet to it, it stills leak. What can I do if I shouldn’t put Teflon tape on that part with the gauge
There is probably a missing round gasket in that configuration.. it is really tough to get plastic and teflon tape to work well together.. it is required in a few situations, but it can be trick to not rip up the outside of the plastic nut while getting it snug on the taped threads.
Is there a lubricant to get the Teflon tape easier off or do you have to just scrape it as best as you can?
Teflon tape is the lubricant. That's actually it's purpose.
If there’s no gasket when sealing the pipe can I use Teflon tape only
Thank you for your video.
Does the tightness of the nut make a difference? Is overtight as much as possible better?
I've just fixed a shower head with an extension one with monkey wrench and my bare hands. Screwed joints really tight without using the Teflon tape as I didn't have one at hand. So far it isn't leaking.
Not always. If joining metal to plastic, you can easily break the threads in plastic by overtightening, and then its trouble if you don't another one to replace it.
thanks
very informative and I had been doing/using plumbers tape all wrong.
Awesome video, very informative
Dryer gas line?
Hell, sir! Thank you so much for your informative video, sir. I just want to ask, when do you use blue teflon tape and what is the difference between the red one and the blue one? Thank you so much!
The color.
Sir you mentioned everything but galvanized piping? I think you need to remake this video include galvanized threaded piping.
What's the danger of tape with a gasket if gasket still seals?
Sometimes you can't tighten down enough to get to the gasket because of the tape being to thick
@@michaeldepow6663 so if shower head and extension have gaskets it ain't necessary to use Teflon tape? I've just fixed one with gaskets, screwing them really tight using bare hands and monkey wrench.
Was always my understanding that Teflon tape is not meant to act as a sealant, but as a lubricant so you can get a tighter connection on a tapered pipe thread
Great job. 👍
Thanks for the video, it was very informative =)
thanks for this!
Thank you sir
Amazing vid
3/4 pvc-3/4 threaded metal valve???
I was taught that you never screw a plastic fitting into metal. It can be distorted as it tightens causing leakes
I liked you in Heroes.
I never realized garden hoses were compression fittings
A great teacher must know how the student thinks so he can explain the how and when and then finish it with the why. A teacher must construct the process in each students head and have😅 a photographic memory to ensure nothing is left out of the procees..
Thnx!
Teflon tape is not a sealant but functions as a lubricant for threaded connections. Reduces galling and allows the connection to be tighter. Other than that, good video.
The word is spigot not spicket , however the word is so commonly mispronounced that spicket is acceptable now. Thanks for the tips.
Whats the best way to take the damaged tape off
Drill with circle metal brush attachment
Thank you
Who knew the guy from breaking bad is a plumber?
A big DUH re PVC, Pex, and copper!
Wrong way = counter clockwise Right way = clockwise Those are scientific terms.
WRONG! the direction of tape on the tread is significant. It needs to wind in the same direction as the treads on the ends of the connectors.
You need to be "righty tighty."
Like most connectors, the tape will tighten as it is forced by the turns and not bunched up by laying in the wrong direction.
🤔
here's a good picture:

😁
YOU ABSOLUTELY DO USE TEFLON ON PVC THREADS. THINK SPRINKLER RISERS. SO, WRONG THERE.
Spending 2 minutes given examples of non-threaded connections and saying "don't use teflon tape here" is not useful.
Not really for beginners.
2 or 3 minutes of content in a 10 minute video. Thank God for being able to skip ahead through all the chatter!
change your name to mr obvious
This video is very misleading. Teflon tape can and should be used on PVC, Copper and Pex piping any time threads are involved. Male and female adapters, threaded tee’s, or bushings.
Why SHOULD if fixtures ain't leaking?
I don't think you are wrong, but he basically said the same thing, just not as concise. He said to use it on threads when there are not compression fittings, washers, or gaskets involved.
Talks too much; a nervous Nelly
Never mind personality as long as what he uploads is useful. Actually listening to all types of individuals exercises the mind&concentration skills.
@@honeyrococo over-compensating is quite an over-compensating adjective I assume you just coined.
