Imagine Holly in an apartment all day or even a traditional, fenced backyard. Yes, she is "an active dog breed" but in your farm space with plenty of room to run, she does; and does it without having to be worked/ trained. I'm going to guess Holly sleeps pretty darned well.
On Your garden you might give them a couple days to see if they will send up new leaves. But next time, put the hay or blankets down then plastic over. The plastic will hold the frost off of the hay and plants and the hay will keep them warm. I live in Colorado and this is what I do to save plants.

In this area, we will sometimes get some pretty cold snaps and if the Swiss chard is mature, thier root system will go pretty deep if there is room. From those roots, they will send up new shoots around the crown or Central core. The first time the entire row was a mess of slimey leaves post cold snap which we walked away from for a couple of weeks until the weather became more human hospitable; low and behold new leaves were coming up out of the darkness. Once the new leaves actually start to look viable, we are quick to remove any decaying matter. That experience taught us to wait and see what, if anything, comes up. More often than not, things come back to life. Remember, most of our greens began as weeds some place or another abiut the world. Weeds often have mechanisms to bounce back from what nature throws them.
I knew people would be helpful. That's great! A lot of things here in Florida look doomed, like my lemon tree, but so many things do come back when the frost takes the leaves. 🤞

Jason, 2 things: over here in the Netherlands we us a combination of lots off mulch preferably from woodchips and leaf litter. Over this you can spread open woven frost cloth, because this can loose moisture (as plastics can’t do) And the other with your new chickens: put a old experienced hen or two in this floc to show them the way to the field below.
Yes I totally agree. I'm thinking it might have been a shock to the plants to remove the mulch and expose them to the full sun. I've had that happen when I took off the plastic low tunnels in the spring.
All of your leafy plants should bounce back as long as the root was not affected. I live in NY so I am familiar with very cold temps. I have had onions make it thru the winter and flourish the following season. The temps you had are the same as most of our winter season. If you haven’t pulled the veggies yet I would leave them for a while to see if they bounce back. Don’t rush it. I have had grape vines I thought where dead and there was growth under the ground. So don’t rush it. Let Mother Nature work her wonders.
I don’t know Alabama, but Ohio weather gets extremely cold. I’m looking at those greens thinking that most will come back, given a little time. Of course, the yellow leaves are gone, but the ground didn’t completely freeze, so the roots will put out new leaves, given time.
Holly is a playful and very affectionate puppy just spreading the love all over Cog Hill Farm. I am glad you guys had the freeze-dried greens to add to the corn bread and black-eyed peas! My Mom used to always serve black-eyed peas on New Years. Enjoyed watching Holly run around with such playful energy!!
It is heartbreaking to see the damage to your garden. I am surprised the broccoli didn't survive. That is one of the last things that gets frosted here. Holly is such a happy girl. I am glad you made her part of your family.

Next time it gets really cold maybe the hay and greenhouse plastic on the ground would help the plants. It may be harder to maintain the long rows in the winter compared to the summer, I see more ppl use raised beds and more quadrants/ rectangle shaped beds in the winter so they can use frost cloth. Most will grow back from the root even stronger !! Probably going to be a yo-yo winter with some more severe cold fronts.

I live in Plant City, FL, winter strawberry capital, when it turns 32, the fields turn on the sprinklers to put a coat of ice. This works for the new spring crops also. Very little loss because they froze things at 32. Might research and it may help for future. Love your channel btw

I lost about everything in the garden but after a week of leaving them alone, the onions, garlic and carrots are coming back. The broccoli is sending up new leaves, so maybe? I didn't even cover the garden. You might want to start some bigger pots in the greenhouse and you can get more food before spring. ❤️ Texas Deb 😁
Jason, keep in mind that if you use plant pots turned upside down over plants as insulation, warm air rises. The warm air escapes out the holes that are (when upside down) at the top of the pots. You'll need to wrap those pots with plastic or tape over the holes to have any real hope of making them effective. Sorry about the frost damage. Pretty much the same here in north Texas. I feel your pain. Good news is we have ample time to replant for a decent harvest. Hang in there! You just can't help but laugh at Holly running in sheer joy across those tarps! She's a true blessing isn't she?

So I tried a few different ways to save my garden from the freeze. I covered some with hay, I covered some with pots I covered some with bed sheets (moms way) and I watered while the temps dropped and they only things that made it where the things I covered with water and the water froze about 1/2 inch. My friends grandpa told me to do the ice way I was very worried but it worked great. I cut all the bad leaves away and now things are recovering great.
You're not alone in the garden area. So many list a lot all over. May we appreciate what we do harvest and count our blessings. Your attitude is awesome!

Living in the desert, I've gotten pretty used to plants looking like they're gone then reviving so agree with others to wait and see. Give it a chance as a learning experience if nothing else, and very helpful in selecting plants to grow in a time when it IS critical to have all survive-might be helpful to know that certain plants will come back after deep distress given longer- than- you- expect time.

I personally wouldn’t trim the dead off it will work as insulation for the next cold snap. I put all my potted plants in my Greenhouse they all pulled through with the lights and heater running. Everything I had planted I covered but lost them all. I’ll trim back about mid March fertilize and regrow. Using plastic or tarps is a bad thing both hold moisture which when it’s cold means ice and death. Use blankets sheets cloth of some kind. Holly is loving Cog Hill life!!!😂❤
I so love watching Holly, she eases the pain in my heart after losing my old Aussie girl this past summer. She will be a great farm dog and companion. Don't feel to bad Jason I lost all my greens too in Ga down to 9 degrees, even the carrots and collards.

Same here. We HAVE to have black-eyed peas on New Years Day. We have to eat at least one pea, for Good Luck.

I think the cold makes the berries sweeter. I went to Keel and Curley a couple of weeks ago and some of the strawberry fields were open for picking.

I’m so sorry about your garden. I agree that the most important things are that all the babies are ok and no damage was done to the pipes. I’m so glad you had your beautiful home to stay cozy and warm in because I’d imagine the camper would have been quite chilly, even with your little heaters. Oh, and I’m so enjoying Holly. She is beautiful and I love the way she follows you around. I do miss Arlo out running around too, but Holly is a perfect addition to the family. Happy New Year to you all!

So I tried a few different ways to save my garden from the freeze. I covered some with hay, I covered some with pots I covered some with bed sheets (moms way) and I watered while the temps dropped and they only things that made it where the things I covered with water and the water froze about 1/2 inch. My friends grandpa told me to do the ice way I was very worried but it worked great. I cut all the bad leaves away and now things are recovering great.
You're not alone in the garden area. So many list a lot all over. May we appreciate what we do harvest and count our blessings. Your attitude is awesome!

Holly was meant to be on Cog Hill Farm. She certainly adjusted to her new home like she has been there right along!
Living in the desert, I've gotten pretty used to plants looking like they're gone then reviving so agree with others to wait and see. Give it a chance as a learning experience if nothing else, and very helpful in selecting plants to grow in a time when it IS critical to have all survive-might be helpful to know that certain plants will come back after deep distress given longer- than- you- expect time.

I personally wouldn’t trim the dead off it will work as insulation for the next cold snap. I put all my potted plants in my Greenhouse they all pulled through with the lights and heater running. Everything I had planted I covered but lost them all. I’ll trim back about mid March fertilize and regrow. Using plastic or tarps is a bad thing both hold moisture which when it’s cold means ice and death. Use blankets sheets cloth of some kind. Holly is loving Cog Hill life!!!😂❤

I so love watching Holly, she eases the pain in my heart after losing my old Aussie girl this past summer. She will be a great farm dog and companion. Don't feel to bad Jason I lost all my greens too in Ga down to 9 degrees, even the carrots and collards.

Do you give the Rhode island reds scratch like the other birds yet? Also, I'm sorry about your garden. I live in southern Illinois zone 6b and can't grow a thing in the winter. I'm going to try growing vegetables this spring/summer and I'm chomping at the bit for winter to go away. Lol
