- Officers say 48 vehicles with a combined value of just under $4 million were recently seized as part of an undercover Toronto police investigation focused on the trafficking, shipping, and re-vinning of stolen vehicles.
Speaking at a news conference in Toronto on Wednesday, police provided details on two separate but related undercover investigations, dubbed Project Spectre and Project Paranoid.

It depends on how long after they were found, sometimes repaired and returned and other times sold off by insurance companies because they already paid out the claim. We got a lot of theft recoveries coming into bodyshop for repair, you can always tell by all the nasty fingerprint powder on them.

It probably cost at least $5 million to recover those 48 vehicles which at valued at $3 million. A whole 48 vehicles recovered out of 12,000 stolen last year alone. This is not a police problem, this a combined problem between the manufacturers and the CBSA.

Manufacturing companies need to engrave VIN on the chassis, engine in a tamper-proof way to reduce vehicle thefts of motor vehicles.
It helps for parts stripping, but not overseas shipments.
Motor vehicles transactions can also be effected through administrative processes to make sure that inspections are ensued before sales/buying decisions are reached. I understand it’s going to create a red tape and may slow down businesses but it should work or slow down MV thefts. Currently MV transfers, sales, export all seems to be easy.
