    Fantastic thanks for posting this my father was a Coastguard officer at Fairlight on south coast I remember as a child (born 1978) exercises and call outs and all the auxiliary Coastguards around ! Happy memories!

    The thin braid was in use until around 1998. HM CG then changed to the thick gold braid, like naval officers. I think it was done as a cost saving measure because the thin braid had to be made specially whereas the naval braid was standard in commercial marine and the Royal Navy

    When did the Coastguard start/stop using the two-tone rank braid (gold on black, similar to the RAF's silver-blue on black, instead of all gold) seen at 16:36 and why?
