Also, there are two points where something has bumped my desk during the digitization process. I might redo these sections in future but i try to play my records only once.
Call me the craziest Callas queen in the world, but nothing, short of Michelangelo's two sculptures of "Le Captif" at the Louvre, has inspired me like the Art of Maria Callas. She was "La Grande Grotesque" - vociacccia can't begin to describe her grandeur - like a swirling wind through the heart of Bernini to create "L'extase de St. Thérèse"-her art was a disciplined madness that grew to an immense mythological proportion. As Gobbi once said, "They'll be listening to you 100 years from now!"
No other soprano should have attempted to sing this opera after Maria Callas did it. She created a definite version that is insuperable. When you hear Joan Sutherland singing "Coppia Iniqua", it sounds like she is going to get a flower or a kiss. Maria makes you feel the horror of the impending death, yet you can hear bravery and resignation, all in the final note. It is amazing....

Those ascending trills in the "Coppia Iniqua" are so mesmerizing and annihilating that no one can deny the genius of Maria Callas to bring out the glory of Donizetti and bel canto opera!!

Wow.. that is some singing you picked.. and frankly I could not help notice how committed Callas is to this role.. how she was really singing into her voice, giving her all when it was necessary.. unbelievable sound too Her voice very very steady. and ringing.

This recording here is from a vinyl record on the BJR label - their masterings of the Callas live catalogue are the best! I purchased my copy from a private seller i found on the net.
The EMI version, which is probably the most commonly heard, is terrible, especially compared to this!

Thank you very much¡¡¡ Since I heard for the first time this Anna Bolena I thought: I wish I could listen to this opera in a better sound. and now, I find your video¡¡¡ my dreams came true. thank you¡¡¡ I love a lot Maria Callas and specially in Anna Bolena as everybody say she is in her best best moment. well, maybe her best year was 53 or 54. but the beauty of her voice was in those years, 57-58 and 59. and even years later, as her recordings of those last years are much more interesting in my opinion. so, thanks again for this great job¡¡¡ :-)
adding yet another comment to her Coppia iniqua is always little compared to the value of what she have left in music, but it is a must. The colors she imprints on the words of the libretto make them poetic masterpieces, each sentence expresses a different feeling ranging from strong anger, to tenderness towards friends, to the infinite torment of leaving this world forever. And she does so always with the right sounds, musically correct, soft and full. She really sings as if she were making a final concert of all the instruments, and goes far beyond even the very music of Donizetti. She is immense.

I think the best that we could here this past century on records! Her voice is in top form too. She attacks the material like a demon too. Just amazing.

grateful thanks for the improved sound!!!!...... bought the complete live recording in Amsterdam in the early 80s the sound quality was so disappointing but when one loves an artist as I love Callas any recording is precious......many thanks..
probablemente, el summum, si hubiese que elegir uno solo, que conjuga interpretación, dramatismo y, pese a ser ya 1957, caudal vocal, sea ese final del Giudicci ad Anna! Sin palabras y sin aliento!

Listening to this, her imperious command of the entire bel canto "sistematica", and the brilliant work of Gavazzeni, makes all the subsequent productions, including Gencer, Sutherland and Netrebko, seem like cheap, poorly conceived imitations of the Mona Lisa.

Why I think this recording is a bit half a pitch higher after remastered. The high D is a bit too high.
Is this the same recording as the generally available one from La Scala? The sound on this is so much better. Wherever did you find it?

Some idiotic self-appointed specialist in New York (works within the Met) and giving voice lessons to totally untalented singers had the guts to say during one of his lessons that Callas was not a good vocalist (horribile dictu). He for sure never listened this.... 40 years after her death they still hate her and her achievments....

There is of course 'out there' a transcription of this Bolena that is the equal of the Lisbon Traviata - i.e. as clean as a whistle/almost stereo like in quality - that is infinitely superior to the BJR tape and thus from a different source. I have no idea how to put it 'on-line', with pictures attached, but if you would give me an email address, I would happily send you the two CD's for you to do with, how you will. I can assure you in advance, that Callas' 'presence' will ASTONISH you.

Sapevo di questa opera é stupenda, ti prende e si vede che è stata una vittima del potere politico del re enrico 8, da notare la loro figlia elisabetta è stata una grande regina ha regnato per 45anni.
anch'io la amo molto- devo però dirle che il merito è 50% Donizzetti, 50% Callas. L'ho sentita di recente a teatro con ottime cantanti ( in teoria...)- noisosissima!!!!!!

Io credo che il tempo è giusto. È la Callas chi impone il tempo. All'inizio di "Coppia Iniqua" l'orchestra comincia in modo tranquillo ma lei lo rende più brioso, aveva un senso innato per il ritmo.
