Average movie with stupid jokes to ruin the excitement and woke characters to take the rating from 5/10 to 2/10. Posted my review here because IMDB obviously doesn't publish woke criticism. I still have hope for Pike even if he's getting too old to play lead.
"We didn't mean to unleash the greatest evil the world has ever known." Glad to see that the people behind the development of this film drew their inspiration from actual D&D parties.
I saw this meme saying that a guy's character was actually two gnomes standing on each other's shoulders, and not even the DM knew. Whenever he took a hit he always needed to know which body part was affected so he could work out which gnome was damaged. He was only rumbled after one eventually died.
For the real DnD experience, the movie should stop halfway through the adventure. Then everyone in the cinema has to schedule a time when they can finish the film.
Just got back from the theater. Was expecting nothing special and was surprised to find an actually solid and enjoyable movie. Funny and emotional at times. Great stuff!
yeah me too we went to see shazam 2(thought it was 3d), so disappointed that we look for another and we found this in 4dx premiering and got the worst seat. But the movie was fun and amazing, so gonna rewatch tommorow again.
1. The protagonists "unleash the greatest evil." 2. There is an owlbear. 3. There is a mimic disguised as a treasure chest. 4. The Bard is being mocked for being useless. This movie is certainly made by true experienced D&D geeks.
Would be great if one character dies, then pretty soon they meet a new character who looks and sounds exactly like the last one, just with skills and attributes better set for the context with a very similar name that rhymes with the old one lol
6. The Bard's name is a joke. 6.1. Said joke is that he's Edgin (they say Ed-gin, but that's definitely a "DM won't like it if I pronounce it correctly" name) the Bard. 7. The Bard is played by a theater kid.
Seriously there are a number of dnd campaigns I would be happy to see as a movie. I like that a number of the lines really feel they could have been off the cuff around a table
@@milesmcinerney5594 David Weber's Bahzell series is literally Weber's D&D campaign. Steven Erikson's Malazon Book of the Fallen started off as a campaign setting he and Ian Esslemont created for AD&D.
@@I_g0T_WoRmz Don't you have something to do than just hanging around the comment section preaching about how you hate the movie and everyone should too?
@@pashauzan hate no but should hold movies to higher standard so we don't keep ending up with mediocre generic crap. It's because of people who settle for less why Hollywood cranks out production with minimal effort put to story. The Dungeons and Dragons cartoon from the 80s is much better than this.
They should do a post-credit scene where the cast from the original D&D movie is siting around a table playing D&D, with Jeremy Irons as the DM, and someone says "this story was a lot better than the first one we did". Would be hilarious!
@@TheLoyalOfficer Nah, The trailer already looks better than that one in my opinion. Even if it ends up sucking, I doubt it would suck as much as that one.
I was blown away by how accurate to DnD this movie was. It feels like a love letter to DnD made by people who play DnD. I was expecting the usual watered down "made for general audiences" MCU style film and instead we got what was essentially a DnD campaign in movie form. Everything from the locations, to the spells, to the monsters, to the magic items all perfectly represented DnD. The film also utilizes show-dont-tell in a way that most Hollywood movies struggle with due to their need for as general of an audience as possible. Nobody needs to explain the bag of holding, or what a displacer beast is, or how breaking concentration affects certain spells, unless the explanation itself is relevant to the plot. Even when they do explain things, it never feels clunky or out of place.
Definitely the problem with previous attempt. It's a movie that lends itself to being a little self aware and ridiculous because it's a communal game that develops as it is played. Looking forward to seeing it tomorrow.
How is it great casting to have a game that is famous for being extreme diverse and then hiring the Blonde-haired, blue-eyed white guy. For a franchise with dozens of races to play, you'd think there would be at least one elf in the group.
I’m impressed they went with a black dragon. A Red’s fire breath is so iconic that you naturally would expect it to be the lead but no we get a black flying over just puking acid all over an army well played trailer well played

Owlbear, Displacer Beast and Mimic look awesome. Seems like they are capturing a bit of the spirit of party dynamics and the chaos of the dice. I'm hopeful.

I'm ECSTATIC at the fact that it's not a classic band of heroes who are all righteous and perfect. It's a band-of-misfits adventure to fix their mistakes and save the world and that's EXACTLY what d&d is. Thank you.
@Figurative Jim Lol, the alignment system isn't considered racist, just that races based heavily on indegounous cultures were portrayed as "dumb but strong/athletic" and "generally evil or neutral"; hence why they have race options that allow more free distribution of stat points now, but obviously the older versions are still there for people who want it.
Saw this last night. It's a lot of fun. The characters and their individual quirks are really strong. It's a cinema film for sure. Quite funny in parts too. Imma see it again.
I've always felt that the best way to make a D&D movie would be to have the main cast play through a campaign, and then write the film from that. This definitely feels like that's what they did!
You've just described the Critical Role's Legend of Vox Machina series. :) Although that is an animated series, not a movie. Looking forward to this one!

i love how to someone who hasn't played d&d, this looks like the chosen heroes going on an epic and dangerous world ending quest. and it is, no doubt. however for d&d that's just your average sunday. there's five other adventuring parties on other continents doing this exact same thing right now. perfect
Me and my brother share a world campaing, so there is LITERALLY 5 "main heroes" partys on the world, no to mention 200+ Npcs which at leas 50 are adventurers. so yeah, i totally feel you on this one
I love this movie so much!!! All the characters are amazing, they play off each other really well (essential for a D&D party) and the plot is simple but extremely effective. It's got heart, and humor, and quite a few extremely epic action sequences so it's a 10/10 in my book! Can't wait for it to come to streaming so I can watch it again!!
This looks like something straight out of a bunch of friends sitting around playing DnD with its story and I am aaaaaaalllllllllll for it. Its the only way to make a DnD film, and I'm glad they decided on this route instead of something super serious.
While they may pull off a satisfying film, and I hope they do, I still wouldn't mind Larian doing a full feature. Though more serious, the BG3 intro is super badass.
its like if the cast from the original Gamers DnD movies had a HUGE backer like Paramount. a bunch of nerds making a campaign into a film. i think this is gonna be gooood
This was exactly the tone I was hoping this movie would go for. Don't try to be the next Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings, just give us a rocking fun adventure.
@@jp3813 You were hinting at that though. OP wrote about "fun" and you were answering that it's aiming lower. So if "fun" is low then graveness must be high in your mind. If not, that WTF were you refering to by using the term "lower"?
I REALLY want this to be epic, because then that opens the door to a huge source of film material. Dragonlance, Faerun, Eberron... so many places full of wonderful stories
*For Hollywood to screw up and insult the audience for liking that nerd stuff in the first place while still wanting us to give them money for it. That said, I want this to be good. We could really use a win.
So worth seeing on the big screen. The cast was great, loved the tongue-in-cheek humor, wonderful mix of practical/special effects and gorgeous overall design.
Yeah, it’s like they went out of their way to reassure us. ‘Don’t worry, it has mimics and displacer beasts and gelatinous cubes and dimensions and tieflings and bards and different types of dragons!’ It’s really cool to see all that here. They’re gonna have some problems with that displacer beast though.
@@jessie-ht7bc Oh my gosh, it was almost 20 years ago, I don't remember many specific scenarios but there was a lot of laughter in our group. One thing I do remember that stood out and was hilarious is that I gained the service of a 4th level fighter via a deck of many things. That had happened before and we had a pre-rolled 4th level fighter sheet and would just change the name because they inevitably died. So, this fighter's name was Steve. Steve, unlike his predecessors, did not die and he kept not dying and it sort of became a running joke because whoever was running his character that week always had ridiculous die rolls. Like 20s on things he shouldn't be able to do and 1s when it was crucial. Eventually, through a series of elaborate events and very unlikely outcomes, he became cursed with immortality. Which took the form of his body reassembling itself after he would die. Sometimes that was quick and easy and sometimes it was very messy and lengthy. We would gamble on who had to clean up the Steve. We played him very gung-ho. A true believer, never say die type and he would often charge into situations that we were not prepared for. He also became a favorite improvised weapon for a minotaur PC in our party who would just pick him up and throw him at things. A pair of half-elf siblings would trick him into setting off traps. Eventually he was freed from his curse by Garl Glittergold and invited to join the pantheon of lesser deities. Steve, the god of unusual problem solving.
Ditto. > Play a stupid bard; > Enter to an already started campaign; > My bard with his skills become an unofficial leader; > Almost all characters died or moved, only the bard arrived to the end of the campaign; Never underestimate some good music and the Greese spell.
This trailer is FULL of D&D spells, creatures, and locations straight out of the books. It is full of Fan service. 😍 This is how Fan IPs should be made.
I would also accept saying something like... PC1: "How likely is it to happen?" PC2: "I'd say like a 5% chance." Since that's the percentage odds for a Natural 20.
Lol...yeah, and would be pretty obscure, but a DEEP insider reference would be if they worked graph paper into a scene! :) Early-80's middle school D&D player here...and we'd use it to design our castles and dungeons with each square on the grid costing a set number of gold pieces in conjunction with die rolls. Anyone else do that?
This actually looks fun, let's hope there's a scene where one of the main characters randomly murders a villager without reason and it's never tied into the plot whatsoever.
@@MP-tj5xv Or have a weapon forged by the Gods of Order to defeat the forces Chaos, Death and Destruction but never used it because he sold it for 60,000 gold pieces just to buy healing herbs.
This might not suck! I think the light-hearted and humorous approach is definitely the way to go. Has a bit of a Guardians of the Galaxy vibe to it, which is great.
@gothhhhh Guardians of the Galaxy is about as close to a D&D campaign as I've seen in a film. It's a bunch of people making terrible decisions, jokes (good, bad or indifferent) and then saving the day at the end through violence. What else do you want?
Yeah, they are definitely using the Marvel template. It even has Led Zeppelin in the trailer. Can't blame them; they want to make sure it doesn't flop. With (potentially) future D&D movies they can then experiment if this one is a success.
@TryNDoxMe Riiiight... nothing says "woke" like this trailer, depicting a heterosexual white dude trying to recruit another white person to a scheme against Hugh Grant, to the sound of Led Zeppelin. Is your metric for "woke" "someone named Rodriguez has lines"?
You know what stands out to me the most? The fact that I immediately spotted 5 monsters in this trailer that are relatively unique to D&D, rather than just generic fantasy/mythology creatures. You've got the owlbear (obviously), mimic, displacer beast, gelatinous cube, and a dragon with a non-fire breath weapon. (Black dragon with an acid line breath attack?) Also, the shield effect that looks like what Eric the Cavalier used to do in the old D&D cartoon. And lots of other stuff that may or may not be unique to D&D, or just come from generic fantasy. Speaking of which, is satyr a player race in D&D these days?
Yessssss, so well put! and the designs seem pretty spot on, especially with the black dragon. I thought satyr too at first-if we're talking about the druid character, but upon rewatch im pretty sure shes a tiefling, you can see the tail in some shots. Satyr is a player race now too though, one of the main characters is one in the latest Critical Role campaign
I love how the dragons have accurate designs like the black dragon's horns and skull face or the copper dragon's wings that go to its tail. The copper dragon was very brief so it might be a different color, but I'm pretty sure I saw the wings blend into the tail which means it could also be brass or gold, but there weren't any crests or whiskers.
He doesn't need any rolls to seduce me. That face and passive charm should reduce DC by 20 for anyone into males (and maybe by 10 for those who normally aren't).
This movie was awesome. I haven’t played a game of dnd in my life, but it was legitimately a fantastic fantasy film. It’s honestly a shame it didn’t do well and didn’t break even. A lot of effort went into it. I hope it does well in home video and streaming.
"We didn't mean to unleash the greatest evil the world has ever known, but we're going to fix it." "Well how do we pull that off?" "Uh..." If every DnD campaign I've ever been in counts as canon, then this is the most canonically accurate DnD movie I've ever seen.
They just need a scene where one of the characters conceives a plan so absurdly half-baked it will clearly kill everyone but for some reason the party agrees and the DM desperately tries to do everything they can to keep them alive and at a certain point just gives up and TPKs everyone.
This movie also needs the Bard proposing to do some crazy stunt that will never in a million years work, with the rest of the Group trying to stop him from certain suicide. Only for him to pull it off and live, with no one knowing how this was possible. Never underestimate the Nat 20.
When the trailer highlights Black dragons with acid breath, mimic's, druid proper shapeshifting into owlbears, gelatinous cube, displacer beasts, Magic that is clearly known and recognizable spells, this, this is gooooood.
uhm actually druids dont get the ability to change into an owlbear until level 17 when they learn shapechange. wild shape states that you cant turn into beasts or elementals and the owlbear is considered a beast. get your fucking facts right.
@@username1719 how do you know she isn't level 17? They've absolutely been doing this for a while, if they've already stolen something that could bring about the end of the world. @@username1719 are you implying a movie that seems to be trying to capture a campaign feel doesn't have a DM that let Owlbears be beasts instead of monstrosities because of the rule of cool?
@@gormauslander yeah and I think there is also no warlock in their party so no one could cast eldrich blast to begin with. But it also can't be magic missile cuz it actually misses.
I've just watched it. It's an amazing movie! The fighting with magic is interesting! I don't play D&D but got totally drawn into the story line. There should be next sequels.
While I was hoping for a dark and gritty DnD movie, this campy and lighthearted take on things looks really fun. Kind of the drunken night of gaming with friends and rolling dice kind of movie. I can dig that.
They're clearly thinking multiverse already, which for D&D at least is appropriate, so we may get dark and gritty down the road when they hit up Ravenloft, Dark Sun and Planescape.
Dark and gritty might work for for some of the D&D novels, but the way D&D is actually played is goofy and ridiculous at its roots. Sure there can be serious parts to any campaign, but a good campaign never loses sight of the *fun*. It looks like this movie has remembered that and understands it is the sense of fun that truly makes D&D so appealing.
I came here expecting this to be an utter let down after playing/dming for 30+ years and never seeing D&D treated with the respect it deserves. Taking the Guardians of the Galaxy, light hearted, fun route was genius; even though I prefer more of the Ravenloft/Dark Fantasy/Grimdark vibe. Chris Pine as a bard and not a fighter/warrior class makes me happy. Now hoping the trailer isn’t the whole movie and there is much more to come. Wishing them nothing but success in hope we get more than one film honoring D&D.
TBH, this slightly zany feel from the trailer is much more like my game experience than anything grimdark. I doubt the trailer is the whole movie, because the trailer didn't really tell us much except who is in the main party.
Apparently they've already greenlight a TV series "sequel" to this, intended to carry on this party (or plot or story or something, not entirely clear), but lay the stage for multiple other spinoffs and additional movies. I think they did a fantastic job of setting up a reinvigorated D&D cinematic/TV universe, that is functionally in-lore and canonical, can grab the attention and earn the respect of new and old players & laypeople alike, while ensuring there's plenty of space left open (the entire Forgotten Realms) for every variety of differently themed cinematic experience. Ravenloft and Menzoberranzan and etc etc feel like only a matter of time, as long as this and the TV sequel both don't flop
If you would like to see D&D treated with the respect it deserves, I recommend you take a look at the Gamers series by Zombie Orpheus Entertainment/Dead Gentlemen Productions. Both their Gamers series and JourneyQuest are some of the best D&D style content I have seen. All of it can be found on youtube.
I love how instead of trying to make a compelling drama about a game they made a fun movie with the established lore of the game. I also like the guardians of the galaxy vibe to it all. Looks great. Edit: Thanks for the likes :)
Dad & I were looking for a movie to watch, saw this on showcase and thought “huh, they made a DnD movie? Sure, why not.” One of the *BEST* fantasy game movies I’ve ever been to!! I have SUPER high hopes for a sequel in the form of another campaign!
Hopefully this stays focused in the fantasy adventure of dnd and not the real world players sitting around. Could possibly lead to the varios dnd adventures being made into eventual movies like curse of strahd or waterdeep dragon heist
Apparently the producer and directors are avid DnD players, and the woman playing the druid is a big fan of actual plays like Critical Role and Adventure Zone, so it looks like a lot of fan love for DnD went into making this movie.
Yep. This link isn't DnD, but it IS nerd culture - and watching it in the theater, I just about died laughing. It's every DnD plan, ever. ua-cam.com/video/Hrimfgjf4k8/v-deo.html

i'm pretty sure that was not a white dragon, not the right horns or frills, i'd guess it's an animated statue of a golden dragon if i had to bet edit: adding some spells and spell like abilities i counted i saw clearly wild-shape, dimension door, thunderwave, shield, misty step, green flame blade, and i think i saw an eldrich blast? (1:46)
@@christopherbelcher2218 I'm thinking eldritch blast bc at lvl one magic missile does 3 bolts that just hit, and we only see two bolts, while when you hit lvl 5 EB throws two attacks, I don't think there's any indication of any character being a warlock though so that's why I'm unsure
After they finally used The Immigrant Song for Thor: Ragnarok, it was inevitable. Fun thing is Zepplin had a few Tolken/fantasy references in their music, e.g. Ramble On: "'T'was in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair, But Gollum, and the evil one, Crept up and slipped away with her..."
That was the only thing I diliked about the trailer; I like Led Zeppelin, but for me it just did not fit to the fantasy setting. Glad you enjoeyed it, though.

Better than Marvel, it's an open sandbox. You got recognizable elements that can be taken and mixed around in any number of different ways. And none of it needs to be cohesive if you don't want it to be, so you can have serious shows and silly stuff and anywhere in-between.
Having franchise potential isn't enough. You need a producer with the vision to make it happen. You need to world-build, not just show off a bunch of flashy VFX and action scenes. I have a bad feeling about this.

Since so many people keep on commenting the same thing: Circle of the Moon Druids can become Owl Bears. With DM approval and it's quite commonly allowed. The reason it isn't is because it's classified as a Monstrosity. Where Druid's wildshape into beasts. The reason for the Monstrosity is because the Owl Bear was originally labeled as a creation from a mad wizard. Yet cannon changed it as a natural creature. However, the label wasn't changed. Depending on your DM you either use the older origins or the one more accepted in modern canon. So Yes a druid can wildshape into an owlbear. "However, the oldest elves recalled that owlbears had been around for many millennia and a few fey claimed owlbears had always been found in the Feywild.[1] In fact, owlbears were brought into being by one of the creator races,[11] most likely the aearee". Their stat bloc is also very close to a strong Cave Bear with similarly low intelligence. So the reason the Owl Bear isn't allowed is due to the lore that it was created by a wizard. Yet recent lore suggests that was a myth and not the case.
Yes... what he said! That was probably the most to the point and complete explanation without name calling or vitriol that I have ever heard ☆☆☆☆☆ That's 5 internet stars good sir well done!
I really hope that the filmmakers could have adapted a whole campaign into a trilogy or even a DND Cinematic Universe, so that we can watch the sequel of this party. Besides, I wish the Paladin joined the party as their fifth member
This does look great but before anyone casts aspersions on the 2000 movie people should remember that movie was entirely written, directed and financed by Courtney Solomon. It was his passion project. He single-handedly got the seed money from friends and family before getting Hollywood backing and still managed to get decent Hollywood talent to start in it. He did this in an age before Kickstarter or other forms of croudsourcing. Yes it's a flawed movie, bad even by AAA Hollywood standards, but it's an impressive feat for a single person. And judging from this movie trailer they retained a similar amount of humor and hijinx that the 2000 movie had.
It would be really cool if they published something like a character sheet for each of the main characters since they're DND characters. That would be an awesome promotional move and also just really fun if you want to play one of the characters from the movie in your own game.
Eh. You run the risk of people nitpicking the scenes in the film and go: "That scene at 32.56 is wrong. Since he's a College of Swords bard he can't actually use that feat to escape the trap, that's exclusive to College of Lore bards." and then extrapolate that kind of comment for all the characters. :P
@@badtoken3739 yep, no matter what you will have dnd youtubers talking about what they got wrong and right from DnD. Atleast they could release the character sheets for people to have fun with or make similar builds.

For the real DnD experience, the movie should stop halfway through the adventure. Then everyone in the cinema has to schedule a time when they can finish the film.

What is the funniest scenario your bard got the party into?

(Black dragon with an acid line breath attack?)
Also, the shield effect that looks like what Eric the Cavalier used to do in the old D&D cartoon.

Satyr is a player race now too though, one of the main characters is one in the latest Critical Role campaign
Did I see them acquire the Helm of Brilliance in the trailer? Or is that just me?
So apparently, it's confirmed that she's a tiefling, not a satyr.
How about the spells? I spotted Green Flame Blade, Fireball, Lightning Lure/Lightning Bolt, and was that Thunderwave in the one overhead shot?
Chris Pine as a Bard is not something I knew I needed, but I welcome it with open arms
I'm looking forward to his Cutting Words and Inspiration!
He played as sexy man... of course he'll fit.
it's literally the only good part of this trailer
He doesn't need any rolls to seduce me. That face and passive charm should reduce DC by 20 for anyone into males (and maybe by 10 for those who normally aren't).
Same!
This movie was awesome. I haven’t played a game of dnd in my life, but it was legitimately a fantastic fantasy film. It’s honestly a shame it didn’t do well and didn’t break even.
A lot of effort went into it. I hope it does well in home video and streaming.
"We didn't mean to unleash the greatest evil the world has ever known, but we're going to fix it."
"Well how do we pull that off?"
"Uh..."
If every DnD campaign I've ever been in counts as canon, then this is the most canonically accurate DnD movie I've ever seen.

I think campy and lighthearted is more accurate to how it's played at most tables anyway. :3

Since so many people keep on commenting the same thing:
Circle of the Moon Druids can become Owl Bears.

@@aedanshepard316 nah, haven't even watched Ct1tikals lastest videos yet. I just hate the marvel formula and this movie screaaaaams this.
@@baklapjr Uh huh. Suuure.. Whatever you say, man.
Very impressed - not only be the vibe I am getting from this trailer, but by the fact that they managed to pull me in without spoiling any of the plot. That's a bit of a lost art these days. Very much looking forward to this!
I watch trailers with soo much skepticism these days that when i feel like I know too much, i stop. I watched this through and I am excited!!!
Don’t read my name !

Unless you're a lore nerd I'm over here vibrating recognizing exactly what they're pulling on and connecting some dots to recent events in the D&D community and dying because I don't want to spoil anyone else.
I want this to be a D&D game where the players have thrown logic out the window, forced the DM to go off script and is forced to make up the story as he goes along, and it looks like that is what they are making. Awesome.
There's a scene where the characters dive into a gelatinous cube to dodge an attack.
We've done worse, haven't we?
@@anhilliator1 In their defense, there was really only one direction that the displacer would definitely not be coming from. You can’t trust your sight at all when displacers are involved.
You know, atleast it's not the stereotypical plot where regular humans from our world are dragged into a fantasy world. They're just jumping straight into this as if we know what's up, and I'm personally here for it.
Exactly! Looking at you Monster Hunter…
I’m all in for this amazing fantasy adventure!
@@tonymata8070 Indeed, glad this movie is accepting the source material and not add a random plot line that doesn’t relate with it. Looking at you Venom, Mortal Kombat, and Monster Hunter. (I meant the 2021 Mortal Kombat, I enjoy it but it has stupid plot line which is none other than Arcana)
@@cosmo8720 My thoughts exactly
@@cosmo8720 I’m in the minority that actually enjoyed Mortal Kombat (and Venom), sure the Arcana thing is BS but I did hear that they got new writers for the sequel and they worked on Moon Knight. Let’s hope they make some improvements to the sequel.
FINALLY - a D&D movie that looks like it's not filmed in front of a green screen for the entire movie. So looking forward to this one.
Right. Just 95% is filmed in front of a green screen.
Shot mostly in Ireland
It kind of did though?
With luck, it'll actually get a tomatometer score that isn't in the single digits.
@@daniellauricella5132 I hope it's better than Uncharted at least cuz I didn't really like that one. If it's as good as the first Sonic movie it will do very well.
Who wants a sequel of this DnD movie
Actually looks like a real D&D movie first time I've been hype in a while for a trailer
