Here's a new lesson video, teaching the first three phrases from Clapton's "have you ever loved a woman" on the "Layla" double LP.
The second phrase, in particular, is one of my lifetime favorites...
Click here www.timpierce.... to see the companion episode (EP 97) in the master class, where I teach more Clapton style blues phrases, along with Tabs and Jam track.
Thanks for your support! Tim

My favorite Clapton lick also. Thanks.
mr. pierce, your vibrato is awesome, respect
One of the best teachers around. Excellent.
Thanks Tim, amazing playing...
I've been waiting for just this kind of lesson, Thanks!!!
great sound and playing, sir
thank you Tim for a awsome lesson
😉👍
I’ve heard everyone from Chuck Berry to Randy Rhodes use that lick to start in their phrases/Licks.
Tom Petty - Intro solo for Refugee
Jimmy Page - Solo Stairway to Heaven
Randy Roads - Crazy Train Fill/Lick and Mr. Crowley.
The list goes on and on ... great lick fragment to build off as a start etc...
Must Know Lick Vocab#1
😁👍
Thanks, Tim. (More Clapton?)
Wow Time, great lessons, thanks!
Amazing playing Tim 👍🏻
I got to see Derek and the Dominos (with Duane) and they played 4 "blues" tunes: Blues Power, Key to the Highway, Stormy Monday and one other (I can never remember which one, but I'm positive it wasn't "Have You Ever Loved a Woman.") Eric played a goldtop Les Paul on those 4 songs and Brownie(?) on all the other songs.
Great lesson… you definitely have a Clapton feel, which is what I’m trying to get… This helps! 🎸🎶
Wow. First 25 seconds...nailed it. Awesome.
The tone is an exact match!
uhhh, no it isn't. EC has his own PU and his "Brown Sound" is unique.
cchgn - The Layla album was recorded, primarily with a guitar he bought used, which had all the worn patches on the neck. The guitar is known as "Brownie." No custom shop. No special pickups. Just a used guitar and a small Fender Champ amplifier. Later, he pieced together another strat from guitars and parts of guitars he bought at pawn shops - later to be known as "Blackie" [sold for $1M]. So much for the need for "custom shop" to sound and/or play good theory.
...I agree northof50now, there's a time not to get too precious about the status of the guitar and if it's custom or whatever and just get on with it.
Outstanding thank you
People trying to teach lessons should take lessons from this guy. Not too fast, not too slow, and friendly to boot. He knows it so inside and out he gives an amazing lesson and he's so cool about it. It's like you're in the room with him. I generally know these licks, and the notes involved, but he gives us the phrasing which is the key ingredient in all of it. Thanks Tim, stay rad.

Another great lesson. As always. I think it's interesting that since I retired last year, most of the tunes I'm working on are at least 35 or more years old. Hmmmm. Thanks
Colin Macaulay not all. Don’t forget SRV and well Clapton I guess he’s been around 35+ yrs. but yea lots of great guitarists back 35 yrs.
Wow Tim, I heard this video start from across the room and it stopped me in my tracks. Man did you nail that and teach it so well ! I just recently found your channel and its the best (Classic Blues Rock) guitar instruction I've ever come across and there are some good ones out there. It's obvious that you lived, ate and breathed that Clapton solo cause you play it like it's part of your DNA. Thats one of the Clapton parts that establishes him as one of the best all time blues players.Thx
Great lesson Tim. Superb feel and tone from yourself as well. I've often listened to these runs but never had the patience to work them out properly.
Fabulous teacher and player Tim, I don't think I'll ever be able to do it fast!!
Tim Pierce, I Love you and I'm not even Gay ! Not that that's wrong . Love the way you slow things down.
Cheers
Really great stuff..all your input is, and love this. Helps so much
Every essential E.C. lick is in the "Beano" album. The second lick is my favorite and unmistakingly one of Eric's favorite. Good lesson!
its so strange when you realize you already learned and played a certain lick a thousand times before without even realizing where it actually came from and why you subconsciously picked it up
How about E.C.'s work on Choker, Snake Drive and West Coast Idea? Those are my primal sources when I first picked up a guitar. I still try to play them today 50 years later!
Tim you just need a couple more amps and you'll be good :)
LOL. He's earned it.
That's nothing - check out Joe B.'s room full of amps at 16.20 and 19.30 here

I like the Diesel, the Plexi and the PRS which j believe is a HXDA ( Hendrix Duane Allman ) Fillmore West style plexi amp. Amazing tone. PRS doesn’t make them anymore unfortunately but there are still some on Reverb.
Englehard Dinglefester it’s what happens when a session musician has GAS but tells everyone it’s for recording versatility 😊🤘🏻
I can already hear Henning "Use your pinky!"
kenny b it's funny cause he's one of the shittiest players who does guitar related stuff on yt.
I wouldn't say that, he's got some decent licks and a great sense of melody.
But, each to their own.
emdblues He's a great player who can play a lot of different styles imo
kenny B but I noticed Henning’s not a bluesy player. He should play it more often. I think he’s just into more metal type stuff. Just my opinion I think HP should try it though. Modern blues.
Edvin Maksuti he can actually play though if u watch him long enough
Nice. Doing it slowly makes all the difference for those of us getting started. Impossible otherwise
Thank you Tim. You enrich our lives. Bless you. You have the great gift of being a natural teacher. Sharing your joy in the subject you teach.
sounds fantastic! what's the gear though? amp, pedals?
That first lick is Michael Bloomfield off the Super Session Album, Albert's Shuffle, but it IS a fantastic 4 note opening. It made me want to learn how to play.
The towards the end of the lick when youre playing it slow I hear some black magic woman.
Great job Tim. Love your teaching method and your insight! Thanks!
2:15 sweet!
That first lick is really Mike Bloomfield ! Check the opening of Alberts Song...
I LOVE the "Have you ever loved a woman" track on the Layla album. My absolute favorite. Thank you
Try and find the alternative version. Same session but before Duanne Allman arrived. Nothing against Duanne, of course it's just different without Eric being under "pressure" from him. P.

More riffs you use all the time. Please
Tim, I've watched a number of your videos and I love the conscientious way you play and teach. There is a quality that is helpful when I'm in a slump or just am curious about the subject. Thank you for taking the time to offer your experience through your videos. I love that second lick.
Your tone is incredible...would you mind going over your sound?
Bending up from the second string to the root note was definitely a breakthrough moment for me, I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it before but now so many blues licks make a lot more sense. Great video as always!
This guy is such a natural guitar player. Almost the perfect all round player. Wonder if he does weddings?
Haha , hes one of the top ten guitarists, id don't recon he does weddings , not when youve played as a session musician on over a thousand tracks. lol
Tim.....I love it!......you should do a Q & A live stream some time...👀
Tim your tone is spot on for this one. Care to talk about what amp/pedal you were using to achieve this Dominos era sound? Thanks!!
adadogod
I noticed his sound too! It's great!
Thank you Tim that was a great lesson
Nice! this was my favorite at the time and still sounds so great today. great lesson Tim I am sure your inspiring a lot of players out there!
I love your tone, I love your style, great lesson!
I just love the look of that beat up Strat!
I could never beat one up that much if I owned it for 50 years though.
(I guess I`m just too careful.)
Not that I ever own a guitar for that long...they come & go.
(Although I have broken a few Gibson necks...Ouch)
...& I also can`t bring myself to relic a guitar that way.
I wanted to, thought I would, created one specifically for that intention, but when it came right down to it, I couldn`t do it!
So, mine is just kinda yellowed with some variation in the paint.
It looks old & in REMARKABLE condition...lol
In the first lick, why must the picking action be "down, down, up" on the first 3 notes? Tim has emphasising picking direction before, but I don't really understand the difference it makes.... Anyone?
The last two 6:49 pull offs in lick #2 are transcribed both ways in the two Hal-Leonard songbooks The Best of Eric Clapton and Eric Clapton The Bluesman. Two pull offs in the Best of and one pull off in The Bluesman.
Clearly Tim is so popular as maybe THE electric guitar tutor because he plays the riffs etc s-l-o-l-y as he explains verbally. (A lot of other guitar tutors speak over / play over the explanation without the concession of
1. picking slowly enough and
2. repeating repeating re.......
Hi Tim, extremely enjoyable always. I know this is 5 years old but I just found/saw it. Do you have an entire lesson on the rest of this 12 bar blues solo? Is it on your page to purchase? Thanks Bob
Love it! How do you get your tone?
Man I love that guitar!
Tim, Wonderful Job of doing " Have you ever loved a woman", Derek and the Dominoes licks. Love that song and love you style.
ralph mccarthy see I just posted that song has so many great licks. Anybody remember when Clapton did the blues thing on VH1 yrs ago? It’s on utube somewhere.
The first one, I feel you're trying to play it too much for speed. Yes it's a fast blues lick but it seems that some of the feel is getting lost in the blur. Just me.
More like Albert King or T Bone Walker licks, but well done anyway.
Is it me, or does he bend the note to pitch THEN strike it??? Instead of bending up to pitch?
I’ve never seen a fellow Boomer have so much fun without dropping his pants
9:45 is sooo coool!
I put the video at half speed. Now you sound drunk and would fit right in at some of our Jam sessions.
Great tone, what amp/pedal are you using? Thanks for the great riffs too!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO SHARE YOUR EXPERTISE SO THAT WE CAN also PLAY THE INTRO to "HAVE YOU EVER" , ... , B/C HEARING PEOPLE PLAY cover along with THE SONG DOES NOT TEACH ME ANYTHING. Thanks especially for the nuances, and the details, really appreciated. Thank heaven for teachers !
Just from a few Clapton songs you can develop a bunch of licks, make them ur own or “borrow “ them and they really can become a great part of ur style. Just from “Have you Ever Loved a Woman” or well he didn’t write it but “Five Long Years” etc. great licks. Not to mention Crossroads.
Tim what effects are you running your guitar through to get the right sound and what pick ups do you have in that guitar? It has the sound of Clapton's guitar used in the song. you have emulated it well. Thanks John
I learned that opening lick, too, Tim. Positively the best solo from Eric’s Stratocaster catalogue.
Tim, your tone in this is BANG ON. Damn.
I know it won't make a difference (different fingers, different tone) but if you could share whatever your amp settings are or what you're playing through, that would be fantabulous.
Hey, GREAT VIDEO! Thank you a lot for sharing. Question, can you please tell me your amp settings for this video? Your sound is amazing man. Thank you in advance.
Awesome lesson, sir please can you suggest a free link backing track for practice this lesson. Stay blessed.
I discovered that first lick in your demo by accident forty plus years ago. Man I thought I discovered God. Lol. It still flies from my fingers to this day in one form or another quite often. Keep up the great vids. You're offering an invaluable service to us longtime guitar hacks ;)
Nice lesson, thanks.
And I though I was the only one who counted such things, but if the greate Time Pierce does it, then it must be fine 😁. As an example (and of course there are many others), in the Hotel Californaia solo, I count the short fast bends, else at times I fall behind.
Great lesson and I dig your crazy battered Fender. It makes me quite ashamed when I look at my shiny, unblemished and pristine arctic white Fender Strat
Great video, well explained. The funny thing for me is that, although I've never learned this solo as such, I copied Clapton so much years ago that these licks are part of my natural vocabulary anyway.
Just like Clapton...no little finger on left hand. But he’s slow, right? Great one, Tim!
Every time I hear a Clapton lick I hear the original. Choose a King, a Guy, it's all there but he does it well.
I’m sure CSN did a lot of different tunings
“don’t know if Clapton did it or not but I like the way it sounds so I’m doing it”
☝️the key to the guitar highway
I'm going to direct this one and get every single part of the color I here that I can. Thank you. Cool lick.
For some reason I just can't do a bend with vibrato - it always sound very uneven, so frustrating.
Tim, I think you're really Steve Martin (with shorter hair), now as good with a guitar as he is with a banjo!
How do you keep the pick stuck to your finger?
Great channel. I'm so glad I found it. Keep up the great work.
Great stuff Tim love your office, mate I'm 51yrs I only play for me now in saying that I noodle around everyday and night I'm a armchair player so what would be the best recording device for someone like me
That’s the intro to have you ever loved a woman. Great stuff trying to get all the vibrato down on that
Funny, that was one of the first licks I tried to play, over and over and over and over....
Wow! This is awesome!
Three. Just three. And the illusion is complete. This is pro music.
Dear Tim,
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
You are one of the best guitarrist that I have ever heard and you are a great teacher!! So easy to learn with you....
I wish you all the best 😊👍🏻
This is mainly Am pentatonic second position? Right? Please confirn. Thanks
Yes confirmed
Excellent! No fuss, no extraneous nonsense. Just teach the licks. Love it.
lot's of subtle nuance, making a huge difference! thanks man...
Tim, Great Lesson Thanks Buddy ! Tad.
Tim, how about a look at some of the killer playing on 'Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad', from the Live at the Filmore. Some of Claptons finest licks in there!
Oh gods yes, my body is so ready for this :) One of my favourite songs of all time.
Dubshock Media He's got to check out that whole show in Filmore! Sinners Prayer and Third Degree!!
The intro on Have you Ever Loved a Woman from that gig is Clapton at his absolute best ever. Incredible feeling and my fav of all time. The res of his solos in it arent shabby either.
Some of Clapton’s best playing on that record.
thanks tim!!!!,please more clapton,fantastics licks!!!!
Great teaching, Tim.
Many thanks.
I believe I saw you once in a movie called Danny Collins.
Great licks Tim. Harder than it lookks.
are u working at Sprignfield nuclear plant?
Tim, be cool and tell us how you got that there tone 🤔
Great content and very well explained. Short and sweet. Thank you!
