Spirit(s) of the Sauna: Seen and Unseen Beings in Finnish Folklore

In this talk, Hilary-Joy Virtanen discusses the unique world of folklore of the sauna. From the sauna tonttu, to the personification of healing löyly, to the vainaja spirit who is recognizable by their long, white garment, there are a surprising number of spirits in the sauna with you...even when you think you are alone!
Hilary is assistant professor of Finnish & Nordic Studies at Finlandia University in Hancock, Michigan, where she directs the academic program and teaches most of its classes.
