GREAT BREAKDOWN! This makes it very easy to budget a nice RETIREMENT in Vietnam. I would like to ADD that medical hospital and dental that should be included as EMERGENCY or HEALTH budget. They have TWO TIERS: Local for Vietnamese is cheaper but is not high quality. The other is for foreigners (in which doctors, nurses, dentist, etc.) DO SPEAK ENGLISH. Services are better but cost twice as much. Put aside $50 a month….for it. If you don’t use it that year. You have $600 US ready for next year. Should you go to emergency hospital, at least you will have $1,000 US ready to be use.

I have seen apartments similar to his in Saigon for 7-10 million VND. These apartments are usually in older buildings and have no facilities.
The heaviest cost is entertainment, in South East Asia every night can be Friday night and this will kill any budget. You can definitely live under 1k USD but do you want that kind of life?
He seems happy in Hanoi, I went to a networking session and I heard of foreigners and expats that they want to get out of Hanoi and move to Saigon. The way of life, the people, the way things are done just somehow doesn’t appeal to most foreigners.
I have only visited Hanoi briefly and never lived there so I can’t comment.

Hello Kevin, thank you for making this vid. Its very helpful. I was planning to live in Vietnam in the near future. Im vietnamese myself but I live abroad. My plan is to live 5-6 months in VN and the rest in europe. I have bought a small appartment in VN, ocean park 1. With saving deposit in the vietnamese bank I can get monthly around 20 mil vnd (800 usd) without job. Acutally I want to double that monthly income, but Im currently too tired of working 24/7. So I think 20 mil vnd a month is enough, I dont need luxury anyway

First, you did not include visa or medical insurance costs. Add another $200-$300/month for those. Also, you need to budget for incidentals and unforeseen expenses. Any foreigner who thinks they can live in Vietnam on less than $2000/month after all expenses are factored in will be living like a bum. Did I mention that medical care in Vietnam is terrible? Aside from that, there's nothing to do in Hanoi. Very boring. It's the most boring city I've been to. And the traffic is extremely dangerous and the food is littered with toxic chemicals. There is no cheap place. Things are cheap for a good reason. It's all about quality and quantity. If you want quality in Vietnam you will pay big. Why not tell people what the cost is of a car in Vietnam? The cost is 2-3X as much as you would pay in the USA.

I would call it 'visiting' - not - 'living' - because you have to leave - you can't stay !!! > Their idiotic visa laws suck. If your older retired and don't want to have to leave the country - your screwed. Cambodia is a way better option - or - the Philippines - where both countries speak much more English too. --- The added expenses from the visa runs - offsets the cheaper prices ?!? 🤔

    • @gregoriosmith6994

    • @Phil-kb8ql

If not being able to stay however long you want in a country is “idiotic” then most Countries in the world are idiotic. You’re arguing for no border requirements in any Country because it is idiotic, ie it doesn’t fit your privileged, arrogant, self important view of yourself. If going for a holiday to Europe, Australia, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Phillipines, Thailand, etc once every 3 months is (as you say in your post) too expensive for you then don’t settle in Vietnam. No one will care, especially the Vietnamese authorities- do you think they want people to settle in Vietnam who struggle to afford a $30 bus trip to Cambodia or Laos once a quarter?!
