I agree; this is an outstanding, in depth review. I appreciate the care and depth you've taken to cover the game in all aspects. I'm now a sub -- looking forward to watching your future reviews. I recently picked NoM up in its full Kickstarter incarnation, so this certainly set the table for me. Kudos.

Thanks for this great review. I really like this game, but I agree wholeheartedly about the rulebook. I've found this with a couple of Flying Pig titles. Great games, excellent quality, but the rulebooks really need work. Thanks again for this awesome review. You're quickly becoming one of my favorite reviewers.

Thanks so much for your comment. I'm glad you are enjoying the videos I'm making. It is frustrating that rules often seem to be an afterthought (or, at least, not as well thought out as the rest of the game mechanics). After a while, it does take away from the experience. I didn't think this one was *horrible* but it certainly could have used some work. I haven't played '65 (which I think is Flying Pig's next big release after tis one) and wonder if that rule book was given more attention.

Another new sub here. This video is what got me to subscribe. I had heard about this game from Rob Oren, but when I needed to see more of it in detail and solo mode, I found this video. It was very informative and did a great job explaining things I needed to know going in, including the ahem opportunities that the manual has.
But I have to say I own the game now and I am loving it solo. This is a great little AI engine, and for me has been much more fun than the "just play both sides" you get with most wargames. I'm now eyeballing '65 from Flying Pig which I know was made with the same system.
Great video and I've been working my way through your other videos as time allows! Keep it up, I appreciate them!

Thanks so much for subscribing and commenting. Glad you enjoyed this vid. Yes it is a great game and system despite the few rules challenges.
I haven't yet played '65 but am quite interested to see how it would port over to that theme/environment. I appreciate that Flying Pig actually creates solo modes because it has always been very hard for me to "just play" both sides with any degree of enjoyment.
(I talk about this is my Celles video because for some reason that is a twoplayer game that I can do that with. It's the only one!

Geek Gamers Subscribing is a no brainier when I find content that is concise, informative, and covers games I am interested in.
I haven't seen that video yet, but I get it. I can kinda do that with Memoir 44, maybe because it's a lighter game that plays fast and easy. But if you want me to get knee deep into reenacting the civil war with hexes, counters, and lengthy rules... I have a hard time immersing myself in the theme and the experience by trying to jump back and forth between controlling Union and Confederate forces. You get my point (possibly).

Really glad you are enjoying the channel and yes I totally get your comment. When I read that people say some 2-player games are easy to solo because there is no hidden information I just sort of laugh since isn't everything the "other" does supposed to be hidden until it's done?
I do wish I could enjoy more 2-player designs solo however as it would open up so many options. But it also provides a nice challenge: to find games of interest that work for my playing opportunities which at the moment are solo only (at least as far as wargames go).

    • @WayneHansen
      @WayneHansen 7 років тому

That's exactly right! I laughed after reading your comment. No hidden information, oh that sounds nice... hmm wait, don't you think the other side's entire strategy is "hidden information"? Not sure how I am supposed to make that fair. My wife says I have a lousy memory, but I don't think it's so bad I will forget the turn I just took. If so I have bigger problems than finding wargames to solo.
It is definitely a struggle finding solid games. I'm relatively new to the wargaming scene and don't have a partner who is interested in wargames, so solitaire is my only option. Like I mentioned, in addition to Night of Man I want to get my hands into '65 one day soon. There are other games I'm interested in with, at the minimum, a dedicated solo mode or series of scenarios. Space Empires 4X comes to mind, I have that on P500 preorder. Obviously the COIN series of games, although I don't know if I crave that level of complexity when playing solo. So far I prefer games like NoM, In Magnificent Style, Nukler Combat with the Rooskies, any of DVG's games, etc. Not exactly brain burners... but with some strategy involved. Then again I'm new enough I haven't even thought about trying a COIN game. Well maybe thought. Falling Sky looks tremendous.
And of course your videos are opening my eyes to new (to me) wargames that I may be interested in and add to my ever growing Wish list on BGG!

Space Empires 4X with the expansion has been in my video queue for a while. I was hoping to make a video when the next expansion comes out but that keeps getting moved back so I'm not sure. It does up the ante on complexity a bit from some other games I've done (and you mentioned) but is significantly less so than COIN games.
I have yet to play a COIN tho am interested in Liberty or Death. But I too fear too much complexity and too much time spent managing 3 other sides rather than playing my own.

great analysis of rule book. I admire your neutral tone there.

Thanks for the comment. I have seen far worse rule books but still it can be frustrating to feel as if the designer drops the ball just shy of the finish line. In this case though nothing so horrible. This is a great game with solid components in a small (sci fi tactical wargame) genre.

The cards are what keeps me away from this game.
The combat is way more complicated than it needs to be.
    In my opinion, of course.

john conner While I enjoyed the card driven aspect of it and the sometimes fiddle some aspects, I do see what you’re saying. It could have been simplified without much loss to theme and feel.

Compared to what? As far as wargames go, this is relatively simple.
