I went up to Prudhoe Bay on the Dalton Highway, also known as the Haul Road, in 1992. But my trip was out of Fairbanks on a tour bus with massive tires. Private vehicles were not allowed on the Dalton Highway in those days. We stayed overnight in Coldfoot and at Deadhorse which was the name of the town at Prudhoe. Calling it a town was a stretch! It basically served the oil workers and the handful of tourists that made the trip. Temperature at the Arctic Ocean was low to mid 30s with a wind chill feeling like it was in the teens. Oh, and this was the first week of July. Getting back to Anchorage was easy. There were regular flights out of Prudhoe. Our pilot did a 360 around Mt. Mckinley. It was quite spectacular!

Thanks for using the stock Jeep for your series. My Jeep will stay mostly stock, maybe a bigger tire at some point. I bought the niche Jeep Wrangler vehicle over others available for its out-the-door off-road capability. “Adventure light” bound to the desert southwest and Colorado mountains. Love your series; especially this Alaska one. ❤️

    A few questions:
1: What kind of Sony camcorder was Tommy using? Is it tape-based or flash-based? What kind of media does it record footage on?
2: What motor does the Jeep use? What transmission?
3: What kind of gas mileage were you able to get on the Dalton Hwy.?
4: Did you ever have to use the CB radio?
5: What did you guys do to keep entertained on this long voyage? Play music from your iPhone on the Jeep's stereo?
6: You must've recorded quite an amount of footage on a trip of that length. How do you storage and organize your media while on the road?
7: Having completed a trip like that, if you wanted to do it again someday, what would you do differently?
8: Have you ever posted a photo album on Flickr of any of these trips?
I'm surprised there isn't some kind of satellite phone service available, or DeLorme InReach Explorer Satellite Communicator.

So I want to know if those are rental vehicles? Most rental agencies have a clause in them here in Alaska prohibiting the use on their vehicles on the Dalton Highway. If it broke down the person has to pay the thousands in towing. If you wreck the vehicle you buy it. I have seen this numerous times working along this road for 15 years.

FLYING ROCKS from passing trucks are the biggest threat on the Dalton Highway = they crack your windshield like you wouldn't believe. You can get a LEXAN plastic crack-proof windshield for Wrangler jeeps, that way you don't have to worry about stone cracks if you live in that area and drive regularly on that highway. They are coated with something so they don't get all scratched like a non-coated Lexan plastic sheet would.
