It's pretty awesome how Oh Sleeper takes such a different angle on worship music with this song. The songwriter actually puts himself in the perspective of a person struggling with doubt and disbelief rather than simply rebuking that mindset.
I love how the song ends on an unresolved chord. It fits the theme of the song perfecty. One of my favorites on their new album. Even as a Christian, there is nothing wrong with questioning your faith. That's what makes it real. Don't follow it just cuz you were told it.
As CS Lewis said, "when you face doubts don't take 10 steps back when you face an obstacle, but rather take 1 step and think about the problem your facing." God may not answer for many times ahead but He always shows up somehow.
For it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." Ephesians 5:14
I sit here, drinking my brains out while contemplating my relationship with god, while these lyrics empower me every time I feel weak. Giving me such an uprising strength to become the man I've always dreamt to become. I am a sinner and a saint, I try to do good and yes I do bad things, we are all humans afterall. Made in the image of a greater being. Maybe we should all start acting like it. In the end if we all were sinners the world would end up a complete shithole. With the pitchforks and fire to boot. Let's all love one another instead of always judging the next person. Every one person is their own self, not like yourself. Let's start seeing it that way and maybe there wouldn't be so much hate in the world.
A shout out to all my Christian brothers and sisters out there I would like to ask for you to pray for me for I am struggling with a bad habit God bless thank you
I absolutely the provocation of thought and doubt this song brings, a message that many christians need. Doubt and questioning are ok, but it brings to understanding that we are to go to god, to jesus, and that god is unfathomable to the human mind.
I'm not Christian, nor do I claim affiliation to any other religion. But this song and this band are every bit as beautiful for those who struggle to some purpose in their life.
The whole album is about an atheist of his way to God with all the pain he experienced, and all the sins he committed. This song is a part of a story. A part which every Christian has lived once.
i am by no means religious but i admire their passion of their faith and their creativity that enables them to speak their mind to use and still kind of relate... they are an amazing band
The last few lines of this song really speak to me. We spend our whole lives searching for answers, but may never fully understand or believe. It's kind of a scary thought.
I am thankful that as Christians we are never stuck at this question of doubt forever. Every living Christian will, at one point or another, fight this battle against doubt. But God Himself says that He uses what seems foolish to the wise. He saves the weak and humbles the proud. Christ ALONE saves, He is faithful, and He is the only Rock that cannot be shaken. Yes, Christ does tell us that our lives will be hard. But how blessed we will be one day because we believed in Someone we couldn't see!
I've been looking for this song. I remember listening to this song a few years ago and I absolutely loved it. I just know remembered the name of the band.
It feels like my pastor just asks for money and tells us that Jesus loves us. The place where I learn the most about God is actually the music that I listen to.
No one can save you from it, only yourself being strong enough to break the habits that drag you below! I prayed for everyone with the same problems as me in the world the other day, maybe my prayer was for you too! Take care, hope you find yourself and get there! Cause everyone can if we can learn to fly with planes we can overcome an addiction!
I'm not even religious, but I love this song. Kinda agnostic tbh. This song just really says something deep about being lost in life, and it's really well-written. Brings me back to when I first heard this album in high school.
There's nothing to envy. The God that loves me, that I love, that loves everyone, is just as much with you as He is with me. Do I understand why He does certain things? Usually, no. Do I always agree with how He does things at first? Sometimes, no. But in my experience, through the emotional stories of my friends, and the powerful accounts of history, God's aim and plan is good, even through the shitiness of people. There's a lot of life and truth in that Bible, Lexi. And lots of love.
i've spent months reading the bible and have prayed. nothing. it's sad yes, but it is better for me to believe that there is not god here at the moment than to say he is there for everyone else and disregarding me.
he is absolutely entitled to his opinion and i respect that completely. what i don't appreciate is him telling me that what i believe and live by is wrong. he can have as many opinions as he wants, but don't sit here and disrespect me by telling me that i have the wrong life style because your belief says so.
it's not just a book, it's more like a library of many different books from different authors of different backgrounds and different ages yet telling a close and connected story with magnificent detail, that includes scientific foreknowledge the writers couldn't have had and countless fulfilled prophecies that you can proof it's authenticity by mathematics alone. Plus, the miraculous story of the church has continued and is still continuing after the writing of the book as many here could tell
I was at your point about 2 months ago, I only prayed for god to reach out to me my whole life. Once I realized I must do this on my own he showed himself. You must find the truth in his word before he can bias your opinion on him with presence.
I agree, I don't understand why people just can't get along. Doesn't matter who or what you believe in, we're all human and deserve to love and treat each other equally.
Most of this album (Besides 'Hush Yael') was the fictional story of a little girl in a broken home and not about the writers of the song. This song is about the girl's doubt and how the girl has to deal with the walls keeping her from God and asking God what he's given her to believe and asking him to GIVE her something to help her believe. Not questioning homosexuality and it's relativity to the Bible. Not trying to identify the weaknesses in Christian faith as whole. So be quiet and enjoy the music. *bow* Thank you. :3
Dat battle though Actually, Micah even said that this is a concept followup to Son of the Morning, utilizing a what-if scenario. Its scenario is this: what if, when Jesus defeats Satan, both Him and Satan seem to disappear, leaving believers questioning God's promises, and leaving atheists/skeptics in the awkward position that they now know God is real (because they saw Him battling Satan), but they now think God and Satan might both be dead. The world is flung into chaos. The story's personal side -- aside from Hush Yael -- is dealing with a very religious man and his atheist daughter. The man questions God's promises and His faithfulness, but the atheist daughter has now seen God and now knows that He exists.. she just now has to decide whether to trust that God knows what is happening or to go with the crowd and think that He's dead. The album ends with humanity realizing neither Jesus nor Satan were actually gone, they just thought they were. Jesus locks Satan away for eternity and makes everything new. Something like this.. it would indeed be a good test of the faith of many, but it's contrary to the Bible, so it's just kind of a what if type scenario. Fortunately. I'd hate to live in a world that now knows God is real, but thinks He's dead.
Dat battle though Adding onto what Jacob said, it's heavily implied that the daughter is raped in the chaotic aftermath of God's disappearance, leading her father to begin a bloody campaign of vengeance. That he did this in the name of his God is the main source of her doubt - "you're standing for you God/ by becoming something so far off." The confrontation between the two happens two songs later in the Family Ruin, and, it's pretty intense.
My prayers are with you. You can find God and the cool thing is that he wants you to find him :) Its difficult at times, I know. But faith is something so valuable that it can carry you through every situation. God bless you
I know this is an old comment section and no one is likely to read this. I used to listen to Oh, Sleeper in my teens. At the time I was a pretty devout Christian. Since then I have walked away from religion and belief in the supernatural. I questioned my beliefs and put them to the test. When I did I found them to be unfounded and deeply flawed. This song once gave me a great deal of frustration and heartache, hearing a the words of a doubting Christian longing for a reason to believe. I had no idea I would one day relate to those lyrics so well.
Maybe that's you chance to come back to your first love. I admit I've fallen away from it myself and tbh reading your comment just made me see myself right now. I still believe but I know I don't keep up at all in my relationship and been doubting more than ever. I think this was a sign to come back...idk how or if it'll even be the same. But I know I felt something when I'd listen to the worship in my room and I just personally can't shake that feeling. Best of wishes to you man and I pray God finds you again
because Micah (the front man) said so. Most of his inspiration for the lyrics comes from the bible. To understand this song you need to hear the story of the whole album. At this point in the album the daughter who is atheist is now searching for answers and these are the questions she comes upon, after seeing her pastor father renounce his faith after seeing God leave after fighting the devil. Everyone that was there thought God abandoned them.
i can really really really relate to this song. i see that He is the one who made us all, yet He also made our nature the way it is, which makes fulfilling Him so difficult for everything we should. but we must press on, for it is worth it. it is worth it.
Just saying man........Shane Blay is one of the most talented artists out there!! Incredible music and lyrics dude.........can't help but love this guy and what he stands for.....
the whole album came through my subscription notification thingy... i dont know the band so i picked one song to listen to randomly - i chose this and its by far the best on the album..
I'm not an athiest, I'm just confused... and this song hits that on the head for me. In my heart I truely want to believe, but my logical sense tells me I need more than just faith. I'm glad I'm not alone in a search for guideance.
That's exactly how I feel. I used to be a Christian but I came to a point where I wasn't oppressed by the views of my family as heavily and I could just say to myself "this doesn't make sense" and had to go with my logic. I'd love to be able to believe in God, but before that can happen, I need a reason to believe other than "the bible says so" or "because."
I started crying during this song, I don't know if its from a long day or just the lyrics but I cried. I cried harder than when a close friend died. This song, is now my favorite.
this is about questioning faith but at the same time, this song is a prayer. read the lyrics because the is by meaning by paragraphs and not sentences. That is how Oh, Sleeper wrote it.
I had a very hard time understanding the lyrics, and it surprised me since that doesn't happen to me often with song lyrics/music videos. (I am the resident interpreter in my dorm for vague music videos lol) after listening to the lyrics over and over I've come to the conclusion that the 'he' he speaks of is my God, then this song is missing the cross. When I crash my train because I refused to use the tracks, God is the one who puts me back on my feet.
True that, it's like asking the question to yourself 'why can't I have a normal life?' Glad I'm not the only one that thinks that way. I just try to the best of my life in good times and bad times.
soaks in. "will the dead embrace you if you never gave them the means to believe? and that makes no sense to me. will i embrace you? will you ever give me the means to believe? ANSWER ME PLEASE."
What they are trying to say is that god could easily fix things...he set us up to fail...this is true tho. I am christian and I believe that the reason why there is pain and suffering is so that we need god to help us...if everything was perfect then we would not need god, we need to come to god realizing that we cant offer anything or do anything, because god doesnt care about that. He only cares about the intent of a mans heart...humbly and desperate we should fall unto the lord
Song is amazing, talks about faith and doubt, to understand this song I recommend reading the books of luke and john in the bible, some of the lyrics are those exact parables.
This song is written by Shane, a Non Christian in the band, guessing he's struggling with the ideas of Pre-Destination and Election, as i'm assuming he would know about from the other Strong Christian members of the band. As a Christian it's something i do struggle with comprehending, and it shows a desire to understand God. Its powerful!
thank you, like I said, I respect your opinion and really am ecstatic that you have faith in something... It's not like I'm pulling my conclusion out of thin air. It's been over 12 years of confusion, loneliness etc.But again, thank you for your support, I do appreciate it.
This song also has a meaning thats more specific, as its mostly probably a song written about having doubts, but also about a character of a concept story which the entire album is written about, who is the one doing the questioning. It progresses a story, if you listen and read the lyrics throughout the entire album, its a rather powerful, somewhat twisted, but fascinating concept.
cont'd from earlier: I also think that many theologians agree that God gave us free will because he seeks a true relationship with us, his creation. If we didn't have the choice to not love him, it wouldn't be truly loving him when we worship and adore him, etc. I think calling a test of faith misses the point.
@XxJaggedJessxX Me too! Their songs became my obsession when I heard Son of the Morning...amazing album, amazing band, and Children of Fire is really awesome!
The perfect "means to believe" is the Bible + History + Quantum Physics = Obvious God exists. I love Oh Sleeper in every way. Amazing band and amazing guys. I attribute the brilliance of their new album to God...and "Chet" of course...
And also, there is a huge difference between true Christianity and any other religion. In other religions, the whole system is based on performance. The more good you do in the world, the more rewards you'll have in the afterlife... People who have that mindset can have no true relationship with God because they're constantly scared they're not doing enough. But TRUE Christianity doesn't revolve around that. We dont need to perform for God, because we know that he has already done enough for us.
You know what, I have respect for you because your one of the few people that haven't posted something extremely close minded and ignorant. Thank you for that.
The very conscience that's asking that same question is the proof. Where did it come from, did your mother give you it? Father? Friend? It's by His grace your breathing. You don't need proof if something is real to believe in it, Jesus came here to show that you now have the freedom to move on from fear and death. I can spout this all day but were born with two ears and one mouth, it's your choice to listen to Him or not.
For all the people who are confused about this song, its about the doubts that satan and your mind will tell you. Dont you see the irony is very powerful in this song beacuse your mind always tries to doubt the power of God. "You gave me a voice that speaks out, but paired it with a mind thats filled with doubt" "I cant change what I am, Lions always kill the Lambs" Basically your mind tells yourself that your chance of changing your bad ways is as far off as lions not killing lambs.

One of the most beautiful acoustic songs I've ever heard and one of the most touching lyrics I've ever read. Touches the depths of my heart. PURE ART.
Right on my friend!!
For it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you." Ephesians 5:14

Praying for you in Jesus name amen

You’re battles were already won when Jesus hung on the cross.
God bless brother🙏
When he sings, "Will the dead embrace you" I get chills,... So amazing
why have i never heard of this band? I only wish I knew of them a long time ago. They're amazing!
I absolutely the provocation of thought and doubt this song brings, a message that many christians need. Doubt and questioning are ok, but it brings to understanding that we are to go to god, to jesus, and that god is unfathomable to the human mind.

This is not what the song is about...

I wish this song was longer. Such a beautifully composed song from the vocals down to the guitar.
The last few lines of this song really speak to me. We spend our whole lives searching for answers, but may never fully understand or believe. It's kind of a scary thought.

Beautiful song!
This and autumn by haste the day, are the most beautiful acoustic songs I've ever heard
Check out the acoustic Fading by Decyfer Down (wage war and red have some great ones, too)
One of my favorites by oh sleeper, even tho it's clean vocals.
it's not just a book, it's more like a library of many different books from different authors of different backgrounds and different ages yet telling a close and connected story with magnificent detail, that includes scientific foreknowledge the writers couldn't have had and countless fulfilled prophecies that you can proof it's authenticity by mathematics alone. Dealers of Fame is about true events as well Google 3 guys 1 hammer. Just research it because I advice you NOT to watch the video
Due to it extremely graphic content
This song is pure beauty. Brings me to the verge of tears every time.
BEST OH SLEEPER SONG EVER ON CHILDERN OF FIRE THIS SONG BEATS ANY OTHER BANDS OF ALL TIME
I've been listening to this song for a long time and I can honestly say I'm still in love with it
This song gave me tears, bravo to Shane Blaye!
I've read half of Geneses, all of Psalms and a couple other sections that I can't remember off the top of my head right now.
My prayers are with you. You can find God and the cool thing is that he wants you to find him :) Its difficult at times, I know. But faith is something so valuable that it can carry you through every situation. God bless you
I had no idea this was a Christian band until just recently, but ever since I found that out I love it even more! Glory to God in the highest!
This song is the best song that I know of to describe our situation..
Let Wisdom be my narrow path, and let Righteousness be my Guide!
Just saying man........Shane Blay is one of the most talented artists out there!! Incredible music and lyrics dude.........can't help but love this guy and what he stands for.....
This whole album is a story. It talks about a girl and a father who go through gaining and losing faith.
I'm Atheist but I respect how they can evoke their beliefs so strongly is such a beautiful song
i love Demon Hunter & Oh Sleeper both equally because their songs are both awesome & Holy Spirit filled.
the whole album came through my subscription notification thingy... i dont know the band so i picked one song to listen to randomly - i chose this and its by far the best on the album..
I'm not an athiest, I'm just confused... and this song hits that on the head for me. In my heart I truely want to believe, but my logical sense tells me I need more than just faith.
I'm glad I'm not alone in a search for guideance.
Tyler it’s been 10 years how are you doing
Breath taking. Speechless. mind blowing. need i say more?
That's exactly how I feel. I used to be a Christian but I came to a point where I wasn't oppressed by the views of my family as heavily and I could just say to myself "this doesn't make sense" and had to go with my logic. I started crying during this song, I don't know if its from a long day or just the lyrics but I cried. I cried harder than when a close friend died. This song, is now my favorite.
For such throat shredding songs he plays, he has a very calm, melodic voice! :3
this is about questioning faith but at the same time, this song is a prayer. read the lyrics because the is by meaning by paragraphs and not sentences. That is how Oh, Sleeper wrote it.
I had a very hard time understanding the lyrics, and it surprised me since that doesn't happen to me often with song lyrics/music videos. (I am the resident interpreter in my dorm for vague music videos lol)

This is the first time i've looked at the comments during an Oh Sleeper and Haven't seen Atheists and Christians arguing. Thanks Guys
Amazing power, a song for all those searching...
This song falls nothing short of amazing. need I say more?
I'm from Brazil, amazing music.
One of my favorite songs ever
At least that's what I see. This album is telling the stories of everyone. They leave no stone unturned with this one.

Such a beautiful song. I'm not a Christian but my family are and always harp on about God and stuff and my music is bad, maybe this will shut them up?
I understand this song is an acoustic rendition, but this song to me qualifies as metal since the lyrics are so powerful and universal.
Beautiful.
Jesus didn't come to make people good or evil, He came to bring the dead to life, He came to bring those who were dead to him back to life.
such a touching song
thank you, like I said, I respect your opinion and really am ecstatic that you have faith in something...
It progresses a story, if you listen and read the lyrics throughout the entire album, its a rather powerful, somewhat twisted, but fascinating concept.
cont'd from earlier:
I also think that many theologians agree that God gave us free will because he seeks a true relationship with us, his creation. If we didn't have the choice to not love him, it wouldn't be truly loving him when we worship and adore him, etc. I think calling a test of faith misses the point.
Absolutely Amazing.
This kinda hits home, I love to tell people about God, but I'm always doubting my faith..
@XxJaggedJessxX
Me too! Their songs became my obsession when I heard Son of the Morning...amazing album, amazing band, and Children of Fire is really awesome!

I'm Spartacus but I like this song. ;)
We dont need to perform for God, because we know that he has already done enough for us.
my goodness this song is amazing!
ballad spectacular
I love this song!
Good song. My friend Hannah would love this song I think.
@Musicolotra I'm from America. Yes it is. you should check out their two previous albums.
I can spout this all day but were born with two ears and one mouth, it's your choice to listen to Him or not.
dang it. this song gets to me every time :')
