Blue Moon is the Man City song, as well as an omen: "It only happens once in a blue moon". it's a nod to both the odd nature of the episode and the love story of the man city song - he's alone, waiting to be loved, and then he finds Jane again. I thought it was really cool to have all the meanings overlap.
The boys at the stadium is special because they don’t go to games as they are very expensive. Lovely touch by Beard. This episode has more context with the last couple of episodes of season 3.
A popular young adult novel from Judy Bloom in the 70s, “Are you there God? it’s me, Margaret”, was just made into a movie. Beard goes into the church and says “are you there God? it’s me, Margaret’s little boy”. 🤣🤣🤣
Yes, this is a reference to an obscure Scorsese flick called 'After Hours.' I remember thinking, "this is great - I really want to know more about Beard!" After it finished, "I think I know less about Beard than I did before." Also, the name Beard uses in Bones & Honey, Declan McManus, is the real name of Elvis Costello. As for the Blue Moon, that is the theme song of Man City.
The writers had written 10 episodes for season 2, but the studio wanted 12, the Christmas episodes and Bears After Hours were the 2 they added. You can tell by the slight disconnect from the other episodes. Random Tom Hanks connection with Jamie’s dad’s crew. His dad was in Band of Brothers, and Bug’s first acting role was in Saving Private Ryan. Tom Hanks has also talked about the incident on the Graham Norton show, it’s a funny story if you want to look it up.
I love this episode. Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like it’s a representation of dragging yourself out of depression. The numbness, the negative self-talk, the desperation to drink, and “have fun” to distract yourself from your pain, the need to feel attractive again, feeling like you can’t do anything right, that the whole world hates you and is beating you down… and then finally you give in. Allow yourself to feel your pain for a little bit, stop running from it. You take a breath, accept yourself, look up and see that there’s a sign right in front of you that everything is going to be okay. You drop your ego and your worries, and just “dance”. ❤🎉
The Limelight was a dance club located in a church (it was around in the 80s and 90s). It was very popular and somewhat controversial. It was pretty cool.
I love when shows take a chance and do an episode that's so off the rails from their normal storytelling. This episode is mostly a riff on Scorsese's "After Hours" (with a little bit of Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange," with the tunnel scene). A lot of people complained about it at the time, but I was glad for a breather after the heavy emotions of "Man City." Also glad to get a deep dive on a character we see a lot of but know very little about (and I agree with the other commenter that I feel like I know *even less* after this episode).
Scorcese's "After Hours" is based on "Ulysses" a 750 page novel that takes place in one day, by Irish author James Joyce. "Ulysses" is, in turn, based on the ancient Greek epic The Odyssey, which tells of the trials of Odysseus trying to return to his home after the Trojan War.
Using Scorsese's "After Hours" as an homage to finally tell Beard's story is brilliant. The weird, abstract, mysterious vibe of the movie is so perfect for Beard's man-of-mystery thing.
Was curious about the keys too, googled it and there was some chat on Reddit about this poem. Dropping Keys, by Hafez the small man builds cages for everyone he knows, while the sage, who has to duck his head when the moon is low, keeps dropping keys all night long for the beautiful rowdy prisoners.
Ted is the extrovert who sits around with friends, plays videogames, got married, had a kid. Beard is the introvert who goes on wild parties and raves, stays up all night, doesn't wanna get married, has a complicated on and off relationship.
Hey Guys: I just an FYI: I was going through your playlist of this series, and your missing this episode in the playlist. I just searched through your videos and found it. Luv how you guys react to this series and movies. Keep on doing what your doing! Stay safe, stay sane, stay strong
Martin Scorsese's After Hours is kind of a noir - you're right Bryce - Scorsese called it a "parody of film noir" - and you noticed the keys, too! After Hours is filled with keys! Keys lost - keys found - keys flying through the air - keys are everywhere! Beard's key is clearly a reference! The "lead" in After Hours gets "lost" in the SoHo neighborhood of New York - he literally can't leave - like the universe is conspiring against him getting home. He meets a mysterious woman who lures him down there and once he's there he gets in more and more trouble. It's a night that will never end!
I like to think that this episode is kinda Beard’s life story in a single episode. Beard is someone who has great devotion to those people in his life who match his weird. Jane is a safe haven for his silly, offbeat nature and even though to the outside world they seem toxic he feels at home with her.
Thierry Henry is an Arsenal legend (won the Premier League and FA Cup) and also won both the Wold Cup and the Euros with France. AND won La Liga and Champions League with Barcelona. Just today's random football fact :) Btw, love that they include real life football players and commentators in the show!
@@hcroussetteI would not be surprised. Jason got his moms name in. Her names Cathy and she is a former travel agent. Roy’s travel agent in the last episode of season is called Cathy.
I didn't know this and the Christmas episode were extras added onto the season until after I watched the whole season. To me, they both fit perfectly into the flow of the plot. I love this episode because it is weird in the right way for a character like Beard, it both does and doesn't reveal his story, and yet it has elements that are meaningful overall. I love it, baBAY! (bad Beard impression, sorry)
There are many supposed loose references to the Martin Scorsese film After Hours...which would make sense with the title. For me I enjoy it more on a second or third watch after the initial shock has worn off.
I saw 'After Hours' back in its theatrical release and yes, there are a lot of scenes in this episode that are very similar to scenes in that film. Back in the Two Aces episode, they were all suggesting Martin Scorsese's best films - After Hours was not suggested. It is a weird, surreal, and confusing film. Much like this episode.
If you watch Scorcese’s After Hours from the 80’s you will at least understand what they were doing. Apple ordered 2 extra episodes and they had to create 2 that didn’t effect the plot timeline that had already been set. Beard is the perfect character for this parody. One of the first indie films from back in the day. I knew you were going to be confused. Lol
This episode and the Christmas episode were “add-on” episodes. The story for the season had already been set and Apple came back and requested 2 more episodes.
I LOVE this episode, but a lot of people HATE IT. Like a lot. It was a deliberate stand alone like the Christmas episode to fill the 2 extra eps Apple ordered. I think it's a brilliant episode, with low stakes towards anything in the season, but it's hilarious and weird, in a good way. The people who hate it hate the oddness and low stakes.
I absolutely hated this episode the first time I watched it. At the end of the series, we watched it again and lots of things tied together and made more sense that I didn't notice. So my recommendation is to watch it again after the series end.
So without going into any details/spoilers, there’s a scene in I believe the second to last episode of season 3 where Beard talks about his life/past. Goes some way into making you understand why he is the way he is, and it also spawned abit of a theory that he has a co-dependency addiction/problem, hence the slightly toxic relationship he has with Jayne

Yes! Well said!
A blue moon is when a calendar month has 2 full moons.

I believe when this episode came out, the internet dubbed the giant bald guy "Roid Kent".

YES! I was getting EXTREME Clockwork Orange vibes from this episode

The fake name that Beard gives in the bar is the real name of rocker Elvis Costello. 🤣🤣🤣
Exactly right

Lots of references in there. The Jamie’s dads scene was A Clock Work Orange
Think I appreciated this episode more the 2nd & 3rd time round. Especially after reading all the (After Hours/others) references
Fellas- you forgot to include this episode on your Ted lasso reaction playlist!
the fa cup semi final was at wembley in london....this will explain the london backdrops amigos...
" Are you there God? It's me, Margaret's little boy."

I think this episode is a surreal homage to
Leopold Bloom in “Ulysses”
which in turn is in homage to
Homer’s
“The Odyssey”.
Yep. Scorsese's After Hours was based on Ulysses (which was based on the Odyssey).
They are in London...the FA Cup Semi was a neutral site game at Wembley
Yes, Beard’s life is very chaotic and only a few people earn enough trust to share that side of beard.

I didn’t understand this episode either and was questioning if it was actually happening too the entire time 😂
There are weirdly a lot of converted churches used for clubs in the UK 😂 but none I’ve seen with a legit church attached.

This episode revealed to me that Beard is on the inside just as insecure as most people. more than Ted, definitely.

I try not to be judgmental but that "noire, like LA noire? Like that spiderman guy?" Conversation was a painfully "bruh" moment
That would be a big fail on the "not being judgemental" attempt.
