Glad to see the fork live on! Makes the bike look more modern. Pretty much a rim brake Marlin at this point.
yes and thank you for it indeed!
just curious, what was it on before?
@@BruceChastain I believe it came with the Jamis full sus.
Nice video commentary about a mod that so many riders would consider if they had an older, short elastomer fork. Great job. 🤙🏼
Thank you!
For reinstalling crown races without the proper tools, there are a couple of DIY hacks that are a little less "cave man" than a punch or a screw driver.
1.) PVC pipe which is what I still use after 20+ years of wrenching. I think you were probably talking about that when you mentioned the hardware store. PVC is good because it won't damage the bearing race surface.
2.) I have used an adjustable wrench wrapped around the steerer tube resting on top of the crown race and then I tap the side of the adjustable wrench jaws with a hammer to set the crown race. Would also work with a 1-1/8" open end spanner.
3.) If you have a spare crown race, flip it upside down on top of the race you are installing. The narrow lips of the races will be touching ad you'll have have a bigger flat area you can hammer, hit, or smack to drive the new race down. This works particularly well with the PVC pipe method.
good tips man. I was just in too much of a hurry to get a pvc pipe this time, luckily I got away with it this time.
You have a beautiful frame regardless, and it’s great that you gave it a better suspension fork, I have a sister bike and I’d suggest you consider (cable actuated) disc brakes! Trek has a rear adapter too.
I just got a old we r Jamis with the canti brakes I love em
Been building vintage mountain for years and I hear ya when you say nothing goes according to plan. When you think it’s a few hour project and it takes all day is pretty normal 😂
haha true, all the little details
Thats a cool upgrade. I do something like also and put 99 sid sl on my 94 gt timberline😆
Wonderful bike, Bruce!! I strongly recommend you to put at least 2.30in tires in this beauty! She will look BRUTAL!! I did that on my old Scott Summit 1999 and it attracks a lots of attention, haha!
I bet it would look cool, but I don't think they'd fit in the rear at all. These on it now are 2.1", but they actually only measure out to 2.0", I believe due to the smaller wheel internal width.
You really have to measure-it very well with a pachymeter if possible. Measure the total clearance that you have, subtract this width by the diameter of the tire (in my case 2.30in) and then pray that you will have at least one little finger of space!
.
That was literally my case, LOL!! Bruce , my 1999 Scott look a monstrous truck with these downhill tires, ahah! I do practice some MTB with it; but, if one spoke explode, then it game-over for my ride 'cause there is no clearance at all 😹😹☠
@@saidimon yeah that's another thing these wheels aren't even that true, I'm hoping to get a truing stand in the near future.
Nice looking bike
Thanks!
Short of disc brakes, swapping to linear (vbrakes) will help with your braking issues, and give you more power and modulation. As for the stem/brake mounting piece, just add another spacer under the stem?? As for brake boss(where you are installing the vbrake), you should always put some grease on it... keeps the brake from adhering to it later on.The rubber piece should be installed on the noodle, keeps the dirt out. As for the noodle, it needs to have more of a bend. I too, love the older frames, especially the 90's -early 2000 USA frames, much lighter, better quality, and more lively.
I have done a couple of projects with Shimano T4000 V-brakes. They are inexpensive and very efficient. I think you would find them to be a big improvement.
thanks Peter for the feedback, I did see them on amazon. I think I'm getting the idea that the T4000 for the calipers with some mid to upper end levers might be the ticket.
@@BruceChastain Bruce, I used fairly low-end Shimano levers. Again, not expensive.
I used compressionless cable. The brakes work very well. Even as a mechanically-inept lawyer, I had no trouble making them work perfectly.
Thank you for sharing I do the same thing, usually buy old Gary Fisher chromoly frame bikes and then I buy a surly front fork get rid of the shock put some seriously fat tires on it and I don't think anyone understands how good the bike is after that
Nice Gary Fisher.
Thanks 👍
You have to use this vbrake anyway, because canti brakes do not work with that “stem spacer” adapter anyway. Your fork will dive into its travel and your brake cable would dive too. Your brakes would work only when the fork was not moving. To make it work, you would have to mount the adapter to the fork bridge to fit it.
Yeah I thought of that actually layer that day while walking! I was like wait, I won't be able so slow down when turning hard into a corner, what a bad surprise?
Yeah, have been waiting for a big reveal 😄
I work downtown and my 26 gf is perfect on my rack. Don't worry about it being stolen, as I paid 80$ . It's also my travel bike when I go to Florida or beach..I likenthe bike a lot but won't lose 1500 or 800 as I would with my DS and gravel bike.
100% I actually paid $25 for this one, but I guess now I have somewhere around $200 into it.
@@BruceChastain Haha that's the way it goes especially if you buy nicer tires. I bought an 89 Fisher Hybrid with drop bars and 700c tires for $25 too, changed the canti's to Mini-V's amongst many other changes, probably $300ish.
Jeez! 150 bucks? My handlebars cost more than you spent on that bike 😪
I'm so cheap!
@@BruceChastain whatever works man. It's still a nice bike
purely out of curiousity, would you say it's worth it buying an old frame and putting in a newer fork? would love to retromod some old bike because why throw out old frames!
it's totally up to you, but like this bike of mine, even with new parts it'll never be the same as a modern MTB. The geometry is older, plus no disk brakes just to name a couple of big differences.
Old fork had elastomers. Must change to linear pull brake arms (v brakes) and levers. I have used new Genetic canti's and an improvement but V's easier & cheaper. Modern hardtail free ride bikes are very slack angle up front. I dig it.
thanks Brian! I actually did upgrade to Vs front and back.
Hay did you put a new bottom bracket ?
yeah I had a cheap external BB and creakset laying around from another build.
Nice !!! I have a old Gary fisher, MTB Hardtail, that I am building myself. I want to put a new BB too just not sure what size is it.?
What size did you use?
Are you using a square taper, BB?…
not today, updated it recently.
Im not sure if you're aware but your stem is on upside down 😂. Might give you a better feel if you you flip it to the correct position. It will definitely be safer because you're no longer putting weight on the mounting bolts.
Really? I think the idea is you can use it either way.
I was think8ng the same about being upside down but hanger then spacers
Put the hanger on then your spacers then stem make space
Get a disk brake modification on the rear ✊️👊
Next upgrade, V Breaks??
yep already done!
steak knife crown remeoval tool.. old stem as installation
NOT BAD! This content desperately needs S M Zeus!!!
thanks Ange!
