Hi! There is an extended version of this vid, with all the cuts and bends, posted on patreon. Also an early look at the video I’m editing right now. It would mean the world to me if you could check it out: www.patreon.com/grobonsai
Thanks Darren. Came at the right time. I've got one that I dug up last year because it was being choked and left thirsty by more dominant plants. Cut off the die back, stuck it in a tub and it seems to have recovered. So, pruning coming up.
I haven’t been able to find one with a single, even a double, trunk. The nursery ones I’ve seen have MANY trunks emerging from the base. Yours is beautiful and off to a great start. I guess I’ll keep looking. I really like the species. Thanks
That’s bizarre, I don’t think I’ve seen any with multiple trunks! Definitely lots with inverse taper and whorls of branches at the top of a skinny main stem though. Thanks Matt
Brilliant little bit of work and I have no doubt that tree is going to become a credit to your workmanship. As I look out the window I am reminded that I need to spend more time looking after my trees rather than looking at yours :)
Thank you for sharing. I like your styling the tree and revealing the amazing trunk. Nice structure👍🏻 Did you do regular pruning to it when it was in the pond basket, or mostly let it grow wild to thicken the trunk?
Hi Darren nice video, one question that maybe you could answer- a few of my bonsai seem very 2 dimensional, do you have any ways to prevent this ? Thanks
It’s common. There are two simple things that help me when styling: first, to consciously stop and look around for unwanted space and suitable branches to fill it; second, when focussed on a single branch, ensure that it has its own space in the light - while respecting where on the trunk it comes from. In the garden, rotating the tree 180degrees once a week or so to reduce shading out. If there aren’t enough branches, training a secondary branch can be used to give depth. More advanced techniques such as grafting can be used to create brand new branches. But that is an advanced technique as grafting has a risk for failure
I hope you have the close up video while cutting the unwanted branches . For the newbies on bonsai like me… Thank you . I hope I will find one after subscribing to your channel
@@grobonsai the actual cutting of the unwanted branches … how they look why they are so called unwanted branches.. that’s what I mean. BTW thank you for your reply… that’s very nice of you… I have tried cutting branches but it was all a guessing game…. Hoping to get good results…unfortunately I ended up regretting why I cut this and that or having an ugly tree and even eventually dead bonsai.
I understand. Let me think about this for a while, I have plenty of pruning to do in the next month or so. It will be a good chance expand on the topic and film the process etc
I have a question for you Gro Bonsai. I have a Crimson Queen Acer palmatum and I want to trunk chop it right back. I'll be chopping it below and branches. I would just like to know can I do that and when should I do that if I can? Any feedback would be great
I have not worked with that variety, but being red leaf I’d assume it will be slightly less cold tolerant than the species generally. So I’d do the cut after the first flush has hardened off and started to build some energy. This may be in June but go by the leaf developing a waxy coating and becoming firm and a bit less delicate. There are two important things you need to be aware of though. First, make sure you are cutting above the graft (if it is grafted) otherwise the rootstock will bud and you will be left with that, whatever it is. Second, make sure you are cutting above a node - the lines where leaves and buds can form. Oh and cut perpendicular to the trunk, don’t do a diagonal cut for taper. Make sure you seal the cut to help prevent die back
@@grobonsai I'm really new to bonsai so this might be a bit of a silly question but is there a clear indicator as to where a node is on the trunk below the branches? I have the problem that the only 3 branches are at the top of the tree and it's way too tall for the type of bonsai I want.
I quite like this style of bonsai video. Being able to watch your work and follow your thought process is both very instructive and relaxing. But it can be a bit hard at times to follow what you are talking about as we see the backside of whatever you are seeing.

A really nice video Dave and I liked the work on the tree, it turned out great!
Thanks Nigel, appreciate you stopping by!
Have I stepped into an episode of only fools and horses? ☺️ Becoming a pro Darren.
@@danieldalton8125 took me a while to figure out the reference haha it’s all good though I get my own kids mixed up
For a beginner Bonsai enthusiast, this video was much appreciated!
That’s great to know thanks
It’s coming along nicely. A 10er well spent

Hi my friend. Still I didn't find a potentilla that would fit my taste and collection. But i keep on looking for. Have fun with the flowers!
Thanks for watching 🙏
A very sweet little tree.

What a lovely buy! Nice one, and good job :)
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching
I always enjoy your videos. Thank you!
Great stuff! More about how you decide what to cut would be awesome.
Great video, absolutely love the content.
Glad you found it useful, thanks
Love what you do man just keep it up
Thanks for the kind words
Look great. Wow 👏

Not so much, it was more to build some thickness in the trunk. I did cut back fairly hard in 2019 to replace branches that I didn’t need.
Pls do more videos like this😁
Absolutely, search tiny tree Tuesday there’s a series and I will keep making them 😀
Like this video a lot ty for the knowledge
Great video. Lovely little tree
Thanks very much
@@grobonsai what is the plant called. In Sweden we call it Ölandstok.
I think the common name here is Cinquefoil, but to be honest I’ve never heard anyone call it that
😁😁 good ide kreatif 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I enjoyed that, not sure the extended version is appealing - for me
Thanks for watching 🙏
