Couldn't you have used some water to dissolve the cardboard from the back of the leather? The water would probably loosen the paper and you could easily rub it off.
+Alex Hernandez Earlier in the series, we used rubber cement to attach the leather to the cardboard to prevent stretching and allow for deeper tooling impressions.
