      sadly, the amount of space required to store an image in minecraft redstone is pretty large, considering one redstone dust is one bit(not byte, a byte is 8 bits)

    • @youcubedu12

      Technically one redstone dust can be used as either one bit, or like here, 4 bits.

    • @dianjonker
      @dianjonker 6 місяців тому +14

      @@bork6996 The way this paint program was written, each Redstone dust actually is a byte (or more specifically, a word? It has 16 states)
      They are using Redstone signal strength as a hex value, not just the on/off state as binary :)
      This should make it smaller to store. Still complex, sure, but much better than individual bits

    • @lythd
      @lythd 6 місяців тому +11

      @@dianjonker it would be a nibble not a byte. and it would not be a word, a word isnt a particular value its dependent on the cpu but this isnt a cpu.
      even still it would be absolutely huge to store, hex storage isnt that much more compact than regular storage even as a rom just because of the way the logic has to be to preserve the signal strengths. so their point still stands.

    Here's a few ideas of things to add:
    - A reset button (probably on the screen itself so that you don't hit it accidentally) that makes the entire canvas white
    - Use block displays so that you can click on the item/tool to use it, rather than clicking a note block
    - Use pistons on the trackpad so that when rhw player walks, they get sent back to the middle. This would both make the trackpad smaller, and make you not have to fly if you want to move your cursor far
    - This one probably isn't possible, but an undo button? You could probably store the inputs in a ram (or shift register?) and have a button to undo.

    Imagine writing a python program that takes in an image file, and converts it to a grid (same size as your canvas) and sets all the colors to the 16 values you support. Similar to your 3d renderer process. You could do color matching for images with over 16 colors, just map to nearest neighbor. Would be a fun project :)

    Suggestion: make one place where the player can use all the settings in a more compact area.
    I.E. a lectern with colored names of color options as its pages, and the buttons for tools and sizes near it
    That might be too complicated or redundant, but it’s neat to me

    an interesting ui choice could be detecting when the player crouched. if they crouched, that could be equivalent to holding down mous left click. walking normally will just be moving the mous around.

    Suggestions: for a paint V3 I'd be interested in seeing a colour picker and maybe a way to 'save' drawings. Maybe a way to increase canvas size

    the only thing about illegal states is, it was neat to think about how you could make this all in survival
    and if you can get illegal states with commands, how far can commands go while still being redstone (I also could just not be very smart, and it still is something you can get without cheats)
    still amazing though, I couldn't even get close to V1 with commands

    While all of the different tools, and especially the bucket tool, are really cool, the fact that you needed to use illegal states kind of diminishes the accomplishment in my eyes.

    Will you be publishing something discussing Bucket Tool internals? I'm really curious how you did this, since the usual algorithms require either having a queue or having recursion.
