  • The Authority On All Things R&B !
This week on The R&B Money Podcast, Tank and J Valentine welcome the iconic songwriter Johntá Austin to wax introspective.
Taking it back to the beginning, Johntá reminisces about his first brushes with fame, from singing in church to starring in TV shows as a child. He recalls the fateful night as a teen where his life changed forever after an appearance on a legendary late night show.
Detailing his journey through the music industry, Johntá outlines his early collaborations with some of R&B’s greatest visionaries and the process of transitioning into a full-time hitmaking songwriter. He and Tank connect over the struggle all artists face, even at the height of success.
Johntá pulls back the curtain on creating timeless love songs like “Be Without You” and “We Belong Together,” analyzing what made 2005 his career-defining year. He explains how he helped discover and develop a future superstar’s iconic debut album.
At its heart, this episode is a vulnerable and real discussion about the ups and downs of the creative journey between two icons and a trailblazer who helped shape 21st century R&B music as we know it. There's no better authority than these three legends together in one room.

"How do you sell a major superstar the record but they don't want, but you know that they need?" Excellent question, Cuzzin'. - Another Valentine

Wait…he wrote ”Come Over”, “I Don’t Wanna”, and “I Miss U”? Aaliyah songs are timeless but those 3 songs feel like the blueprint of recent r&b.

So we just gon' skip over the fact that "Changing Faces" released this BEFORE Aaliyah and recorded their version first with THEM doing Tank's part? The album flopped and a a year later, Johnta and Atlantic decide to give the song to Aaliyah to redo. But she sang it verbatim. So it's not like she had hard work to do. I was around JD (her other producer after Timbaland) at the time and got the story in real time.

That's not true!! Aaliyah recorded the song first in 1999, but they (blackground records) didn't buy the song. So the song was giving to changing faces after. Cassandra from Changing faces talks about it: m.ua-cam.com/video/1RUCP-_UWCU/v-deo.html&pp=ygUcQ2hhbmdpbmcgZmFjZXMgdGFsa3MgYWFsaXlhaA%3D%3D

I had the Changing Faces album and I remember that. They used to play it on the radio but it wasn’t long before it was gone.

@@IamCarlFree if you remember, Aaliyah switched labels from JIVE to Atlantic records at that time. Changing Faces had also switched to Atlantic a year earlier. So when that happened, they both were commissioned to record however, changing faces album was already completed and so it was released and became a B-side single. it ended up picking up steam, but when Aaliyah was finally convinced to record it and it came across the executives desk. They immediately decided with Aaliyah being the artist, Dave given the largest amount of money to, and also just in general being the larger artist that let’s pull this song, and nobody will remember it, and will go ahead and release it. The problem with that is before it could be released officially as a single Aaliyah passed away unfortunately. Please excuse any misspellings because I’m using voice typing because I’m multitasking but I’m sure you can put it together what I’m saying. And I am telling you that is someone that was therein the entire mix when this was happening.
