I stayed at an "illegal" airbnb in DC, they had a lot of rules about "not talking to anyone, and if approached, you are a friend of the homeowner" etc. Honestly I didn't care too much, but ultimately reported them for the place being disgusting and insecure. But they just removed the listing and relisted it under a new name within a week lol.

The ugly side of tourism is that these companies ruin entire neighborhoods and cities. For example, lots of generational folks in the French Quarter of New Orleans and nearby neighborhoods were pushed out to make room for daily renters. There are entire neighborhoods where no one lives there because it's more profitable to have it all be airbnbs. Kinda like South Beach and the boutique hotels. All the local culture gets killed. Same with historic places in Italy and Spain. All the old city centers are nothing more than rentals and airbnbs and the local culture is gone.

I rated it 4 stars (no AC other than in the bedrooms, fan didn’t work in the bathroom so it was HOT every time someone took a shower, WiFi didn’t work at all). The host messaged me and asked why 4 stars. I didn’t see it until the next day when she messaged me again and said “I gave you an opportunity to respond and you didn’t so I won’t be hosting for you or any of your guests again.” Like okay, bully me into leaving a 5-star review. You are missing a key criticism of Airbnb that was well documented. Hosts who create false listings and con users into a new listing at the last minute. As an example that I remember a young couple rented an Airbnb in Chicago months before arriving.
When they did arrive, the host said something along the lines of a water leak was going on to make it to where they couldn't rent that particular place they originally had seen on the app, but for a lesser or same price, they could rent out another apartment. The host would then show them all the photos either inside or outside of the app. Being that it was a last-minute change and as a guest, you couldn't switch out without paying extremely high prices, they reluctantly would agree.
As you can guess, the house was not what was described in the photos and would be a horrible experience for the guest. On top of that, Airbnb would deny them their money back, saying that they rented outside of the application and that the refund policy doesn't apply.

If a service makes it easy for scammers and predators to thrive, it's a shoddy service.

    • @SaruParadise

Customer acquisition has to be a huge cost. So much of startup profitability is growing the user base to grow revenue and raise valuation (or stock price) to get more capital to expand to get more capital to expand… their second biggest cost is probably legal and lobbying as they, like Uber, benefit hugely from being able to skirt regulations that apply to their competitor (hotels) which aren’t hugely profitable (compare Marriott or Hilton valuations to Airbnb). But fundamentally it may not be a profitable venture. Hotels are regulated for a reason. Airbnb is forced to self-regulate as they grow, and as some places start regulating then. The sharing economy is more a product of venture capital than good ideas, and lobbying to skirt regulations that would benefit the customers who don’t realize the lack of protection until it all hits the fan.

Not all investors are foreign. Just rich people in general.
But the major bump in real estate prices are luxury condos. If your metro area has built a bunch of new Lux condos over the past 10 years, the value of the surrounding area instantly becomes higher. Thus when it’s time to sell homes they become more expensive.
Singapore has government subsidized housing and it’s for middle class not just the poor. It’s the only way to bring down prices. The problem. Luxury condo prices will fall too. These are tax shelters and banks for the super rich. Think about it. If you got 10 million, you can’t just put that into a normal bank. This the whole purpose of Lux condos. There are many Lux condos that no one even lives in. They may not even be owned by a person but an LLC that buys a bunch of Lux condos around the country and divides them into stock like investment units for the rich to put their money into. Property value usually rises over time. It also shields them from certain taxes.
It’s the reason why to afford a home people need to move to a less densely populated city. The problem is that e good paying jobs may not be there. Thus I believe the move is only for recently retired people who sold their home in a big city like LA or New York for 900,000+ dollars and downsized moved to a smaller city where they can purchase a home for under 400,000 and live of the profit, social security, and whatever retirement income they have.

Don't need to pay extra. You can find hotel rates cheaper than AirBnB. A lot of listings are desperately trying to get their mortgage paid off. Hotels don't have this problem and they of course scale better because they have 500+ unit buildings so when things are slow they can offer rock bottom rates. I have a lot of younger friends that can't seem to do anything without an "app". AirBnB is what they're used to and they don't know how to book a hotel to compare rates. Hotels during non-busy times can be incredibly cheap and going for the cheapest accommodations is usually better than the best AirBnBs.

it is "Perceived value" this is true in almost all industries..it is what the customers perceive as the value for the service...which can be wildly different than the real value.....also what the market will bear..
if 2 service providers provide the exact same service but 1 charges 3 times more it is perceived they are a better service..of course there is a limit if you charged too much the customer will think you are gouging..if you price it too cheap there must be something wrong with the service...delicate balance for sure...
real world example..a company i worked for many years built a black box that was specific to an industry for specific task..we were the only ones building anything like it..for all materials and labor they were in it for about $20-$30 per unit..they marketed it for $150..sales were sluggish ..so they made a few changes they raised the price to $1000 and offered a lifetime warranty and sealed the box completely (you would have completely destroy it to see what was inside) ..due to the fact that we used off the shelf parts anyone could build it...sales skyrocketed...

Tbf, none of these sound like issues with airbnb itself, but just shitty people using the service. They can't really control what the people using the service do. Sure you could have it in the terms and conditions "don't be racist or trash people's houses", but you'd assume that'd be a given. I guess a fix to the last issue could be making it so that you can't put whole houses on there, but just individual rooms or something, then people might stop buying up houses just to use as airbnbs.
I've only used airbnb once as a guest while visiting a city for a convention and it was fine.

      @Rilenz13 3 роки тому +8

@Kylie Byrnes they make billions because they created a product/service that a lot of people wanted to use, where else do you expect the money to go? I'll blame big businesses when they're actually at fault for something, but all the examples given in this video were the result of the shitty people using the service and not the company itself. Just blaming the company doesn't punish the people that caused the actual harm. Arguments like this just allows other people to get away with stuff and punishes the others using these services who do nothing wrong, because the blame just gets placed on the largest, easiest target. And they do do things, they change policies and update their terms or whatever to try and disuade things like this in the future, but you can't make something 100% invulnerable to stupid people.
I even suggested a change they could make in my original comment by making it so people couldn't put whole houses up for rent on their service, which isn't "letting them get away with doing nothing".
"you're all sheep" the only people I see use this phrase are all people who think exactly the same and just read it somewhere else or heard it in a movie and they think it sounds cool.
Airbnb didn't tell me shit or to think a certain way, I'm just giving my own opinion based on what was said in the video, but all that seems to have gone over your head in favour of "big business = bad" instead of maybe "the individuals who caused this harm should be held accountable for their actions" .

And it has had ZERO effect on rent prices going up. They keep rising. It has nothing to do with Short Term Rentals. Reason #3 is not really as big a problem as others say. The three times I've used them have all been when traveling to attend motorsports events, which are usually in smaller markets with less lodging options nearby, and have found them to be cost effective in those situations while providing a generally better experience than a hotel. Of course, that's as a result of doing my research on where we end up staying, and I've seen plenty of listings that likely wouldn't have resulted in as good of an experience, and at times have decided on more traditional options.

Listen. I used to work for the costumer service of Airbnb for a couple of years. The "violation of privacy" issues were INCREDIBLY COMMON. And the Airbnb internal policies were not made to protect the users but to kinda bribe them into not reporting the plataform to the authorities. Wanted a refund? You got it. Wanted a $1000 coupon to book a new place? you got it. Wanted Airbnb to book an 5 star hotel to compensate for whatever issue you had in your reservation? YOU GOT IT. It was crazy.

About three years ago I worked as a guard at a fancy condo complex where some of the residents were renting out their units to out of town visitors via Airbnb, which was a violation of their lease. Part of my duties was to report these violations to the property manager.

They were denied by the host for more than the agreed upon number of guests, and a NO PETS policy, but the guests were a different skin color, so they claimed they were denied because the host was an "ist." Same thing with the guy you did mention that was denied, then approved on a different profile. First profile he was dressed like a gang member, second account showed someone in a business suit. Then no mention of their recent ad, that basically said if you're not on the left side of the political spectrum we don't want you using our service?

One of the most reprehensible businesses to date. Single-handedly responsible for housing prices going up in high-demand cities, abject lack of quality control, no regulation, no oversight to see that residences conform to basic safety standards (smoke detectors, pest control, cleanliness, or even a reachable contact), and no real financial protection against bad actors. This company is the perfect argument for the existence of regulation and standards, and the perfect example of why a lack of regulation is bad for humanity. If you want to complain about your rent, or even hear anyone else talk about it--first talk about AirBnB. In fact, the lack of affordable housing directly causes homelessness. Thanks AirBnb.
Anything less that calling this company disgusting is being stinting on how bad this organization is. Calling this "controversial" is a weasel word that seeks to equivocate the wrongdoing of the organization.

Airbnb used to have a great value proposition for somebody looking to rent. As mentioned by other folks, they no longer represent a good deal and their online "support" literally doesn't get back to you until a week later and they use "community expert"s as lackeys who cannot help you with whatever issue you are having. At this point, their name is better associated with fake listings and reading home invasions and guests being robbed.. like the Houston story the other week where a bridal party went out and somebody stole EVERYTHING while they were away, their cars and even the food in their fridge!

My major issue wit Airbnb is the fact you can't always get your money back if you cancel. My daughter rented an Airbnb and the weekend before her trip got severely ill. They would only refund 10% of the full rent. A traditional hotel first doesn't require the money in advance and second generally has a cancellation policy up to 24 hours before. I don't think I'll ever use Airbnb or any service like it unless I was hard up for a place to stay.
