I like to think that the mercy she showed Alicent was just to pay her back for the mercy of not having her killed when she didn't declare for Aegon but in the same token, showing who it is that Alicent messed with. Maybe hoping the spectacle would make Alicent back down before the war even started
This is my take on it as well. Why else would they show the scene of her escaping and seeing Lord Caswell hanging? Those are just the details I notice when it comes to scenes like that.
Seriously, it’s like people think she’d want to kill her family. Not even Aegon, Rhaenyra or Alicent want bloodshed yet. They all want a clean win.

But judging by next episode trailer she fully knew that war and kinslaying will happen or be attempted since she didn’t have the backbone to end the inevitable war then and there! Apparently she has the backbone to murder dozens of innocent peasants who were forced to attend and a backbone that withstands massive impact force of being slammed into several feet thick stone by a dragon…….
Alicent imprisoned Rhaenys and gave her time to think her allegiance. The greens missed out on the massive fleet through Vaemond earlier so Alicent needed her alive. She was just as important to Alicent as her dragon Maeles coz after her passing Drifmark goes to Lucerys and greens surely don’t want that. So it’s not mercy but rather circumstances that kept her alive.
PS: Luke will inherit after Corlys death but until Rhaenys heads Driftmark
Rhaenys is such an awesome character, one of my favorites. Her on her dragon was SOOOOO COOL!!!
I agree with you in your admiration for Rhaenys and Viserys. They seem like real people who behave like real people. It seriously aggravates me that people are being so ignorant towards Rhaenys character, specifically in her actions, or rather lack of acting against the greens. People are seriously confused and/or upset about her deciding not to roast her own family when nobody has yet declared war. If she had murdered them it would have almost certainly started a war before alliances had been solidified, the realm would erupt into a free-for-all for the throne. Given how Alicent and Rhaenyra were attempting to mend their rift I feel like Rhaenyra would have punished or straight executed Rhaenys for multiple crimes, ie: king slaying, kin slaying, treason, come to mind. It was not for Rhaenys to make that decision. By all that is reasonable and realistic, what happened makes complete sense. What doesn't make sense is everyone who cannot clearly see why she chose not to do it.
It wasn't scare of Rhaenyra that held back Rhaenys, Rhaenys at this point didn't gave a rat's ass for what Rhaenyra would think, it was bcs Rhaenys didn't wanted to be part of the war between Greens and Blacks, she was reluctant to join any faction.
She said it from the very beginning that the war would happen after Viserys and when it was going to happen finally she wasn't shocked at all, all she wanted was keeping herself and her Granddaughter's away from it.
Also Rhaenyra executing Rhaenys for killing Aegon bcs it's "Kingslanding" would mean she accepts Aegon as "King" why would she do such a thing to harm her own claim ???
In the books the reason the coronation is held in the dragonpit is so that all the smallfolk can see Aegon mount his dragon and fly to the red keep as a power move, super weird that they would hold a coronation for Aegon, in the dragonpit, with the conquerers crown, and blackfyre, and they dont think to bring Sunfyre out? why not such a huge power move to have Aegons dragon behind the stage so everyone could see him, also could have explained why Rhaenys left, not wanting to have a dragonfight in the middle of a crowd.
Didn't you see the scene? There's was no Sunfyre, only Aegon there scarred behind mommy. The fight would have been over with one word.

The design of Meleys is just so badass. Both gorgeous and incredibly fierce. Just based on look and size she seems like a hard fight for any other Targaryen Dragon
Meleys is the fastest dragon on the show most other dragons whould have a hard fight against her
Let's just say she's gonna have her work cut out for her later in the series.
Why is Meleys a she? Dragons have no gender in the books.

Vhagar, Meraxes, and Moondancer have always been referred to as she-dragons in the ASOIAF lore.

I love Rhaenys, but when she and her dragon danced, innocent people died.
I feel like that's one of the main points of this whole story.
Royals, no matter if they're good, bad, or neutral, fight one another and the smallfolk must suffer the brutal brunt of the petty rulers and their game of thrones.
But the dragons didn’t dance in that moment…..Rhaenys only controlled her dragon into carelessly massacring dozens of innocent peasants who were forced to attend the ceremony in order for her “YASSS SLAY QUEEN BOSS BI$&@!” Moment to ultimately NOT end the inevitable war that she knows is coming, ultimately risking the doom of her superior racial bloodline, House Valaryon, House Targ, and the dragons to all possibly go utterly extinct……but at least it looked kool!!! Facetious comments aside However, I must acknowledge that you are correct that the carelessness and senseless killing of peasants by the racially superior elite class is a point of story, however that’s usually when they battle, conquer etc not simply to trade narrative for a pointless spectacle of murder simply for a slay queen moment

My God, finaly someone with a brain. Every time I see fans just obvliviouously adore Rhaenys and this scene makes me facepalm.
If she had killed the royals I would have understood, trade a few dozen lives, but end a future civil war that will see thousands dead. But she literally killed innocent people just so she has a lame staredown. I mean this has to be one of the most pointless scenes I've ever seen.
Did the director go "Ah who cares, the majority of our fans only have half-working brains anyway, just show them a fierce looking female, a dragon, and they'll gulp up it up like morons".
Kind of like how governments are now in modern times. Some themes don’t change. 🤷🏼♀️

First of all, I am a HUGE FAN of the actress who plays her (those who are Nurse Jackie fans know) and was disappointed that she took a role that kept her in the background for the most part, since she is an amazing actress. UNTIL THIS SCENE! OH MY GOD!! I freaking loved it! Go Rhaenys!! A big HELL YEAH from me!

Yeah I really don't like what they did with her bursting through the floor like that and killing at least 500 people, that just seemed like they wanted a bit of dragon action to get the people who clap thier hands at dragons on screen for no other reason then cuz dragons pretty
What I would have liked instead is if they intercut ageon the soaking in the glory with rhaenys going to meleys putting her armour on then unchaining and mounting meleys before escaping out the back door we saw syrax enter in episode 1, and you can have meleys let out a loud roar and have the greens see her escape and becoming extremely worried as a result, a similar spectical but non of the stupid especially with what's going to happen with the dragon pit later seeing a dragon bust through the floor like that feels off to me
Not only that, but this is going to backfire horribly in both Rhaenys and Meleys later.

I actually liked the surprise/shock value of this scene. If you look at it thru the lens of GoT season 7 or 8, than you are missing the point. It establishes Rhaenys as a major player in the war to come. The whole series is medieval fantasy, so innocent small folk dying are just a fact of life. And I'm not going to get all caught up in the tinfoil hat conspiracies/ morality issues, because at the end of the day it's just a TV show.
the scene was unnecessary, meleys and Rhaenys have their moment os greatness later, the showrunners stole a muche better scene of coronation whem Aegon and haelane fly with their beautfull dragons across the city

I do find it interestingly humourous how Episode 9 intended to show Team Green doing the most devious, immoral and reprehensible things - And then the episode ends with Team Black's Rhaenys bursting through the floor and brutally murdering hundreds of innocent bystanders without a care in the world.
Thank the Gods the realm chose Viserys all those years ago.

I don't think that this specific version of Rheanys would exist if she was crowned queen of the 7 (6)kingdoms. Much of who she is now is because of her past

She didn’t brutally murder anyone. She broke through the Dragon pit, and escaped. She was being held prisoner, and her life was at risk. Fuck the peasants cheering for their Usurper, and fuck morality. We literally just saw those same peasants cheering on kids in the fighting pit.

That was the second dumbest scene in the entire episode (the first being Criston Cole's fight Arryk or Erik). It's bizarre to me that people still see Rhaeneyra's side as the good guys? She treats the smallfolk like trash (the Bard at the Weirwood tree, making him play the same song for probably hours and on the street of silk when she was mocked in a play she openly stated that they don't matter to her), she escapes accountability all the time due to her position (much to Alicent's chagrin), she openly insults powerful nobles (Redwyne, Baratheon and Lannister), Slights House Valaryon by birthing bastards and having them carry their name and in doing so resulted in the full blooded male line being virtually extinct after Corlys' death (they don't know Laenor is alive but that's irrelevant). Don't even get me started on Daemon.
I've been on Alicent and Aemond side, they seem like much better people compared to Daemon and Rhaenyra the wh0re princess.
And it's the Greens that are the good ones? Please

The civil war didn’t start yet, and those peasants were cheering along for the usurper. Even if they were forced to attend, they still preferred Aegon over Rhaenyra because he’s a male, that was made clear by the play Rhaenyra and Daemon saw. They can all catch a Dracarys.

They cast velaryons as Africans to "differentiate" between characters yet take rhaenys black hair which would differentiate her from the rest of the targs
In the television show everyone keeps pointing to the children's dark hair as proof of Strong genetics. If Rhaenys had dark hair then that couldn't be used against Rhaynera's children. Leanor Velaryon being mixed race also visually makes us question Rhaenyra's actions even more.
Yes, it's possible the children could come out fully white and it's possible they could have dark hair but what are the chances of them being fully white and having brown hair from some long lost relative? If not for these things we would just write off the bastard claims.
It could be used and their ancestry would be a bit more ambiguous. No different to Robert baratheon's children, both of them would be possible but highly unlikely.

Rhaenys's motivations are pretty clear in my mind. Alicent locked her up and threatened to have her dragon withheld from her. A coup is being carried out and anyone opposing the Hightowers are being imprisoned and murdered. Her life and the life of her dragon are in danger. That's what Rhaenys knows for certain.
And because of the boss character she is, she is going to make a point to scare the living hell out of everyone involved. "You dare threaten ME?! You don't know what a threat is, but I will show you. No one can shield you from my fury if I wanted you dead. Not even the whole of King's Landing is immune. Test me again and see what happens." She said that with zero words. That's why it needed to be shock and awe. That's why she had her dragon burst through the floor and roar in their faces. She was making the point that whatever power they think they have is nothing to her.
Sure, she killed many innocent people to make that point and save herself, but I'm not so sure I'd do any different in her shoes. Best believe I'll let ppl die to save my own skin. Humans are terrible in general. And I imagine she probably has a similar stance if she's willing to kill to make a statement like that. I do not fault her for what she did and cheered her on every second. Call me petty. Call me cold. I loved it.
I also believe the beast beneath the boards was referring to Rhaenys. Helaena had been saying it since the Queen-that-never-was arrived in King's Landing. Helaena's spider senses began tingling when she was near. Her dragon was only an extension of her motivations, because in that moment, Rhaenys was the beast showing her claws to Alicent.
The reaction of everyone would have been different if it was someone from the Greens dad did that

They should’ve had vhagar in or near by the dragon pit as a reason for rheanys to not kill the greens because she wouldn’t have wanted to fight vhagar on the ground and in a inclosed space

Daemon named his two sons after his brothers: Viserys and Aegon (who died as an infant). But according to Sara Hess, Daemon has no redeeming qualities. Not even being a war hero.

It wasn't her fight. She knew if rhaenyra wanted the crown, SHE had to earn it herself. Plus, rhaenys isnt a king slayer.

I think the reason she did that why because a part of her was still pissed at Viserys getting the crown and seeing Rhaenyra getting it taken from her was too much, never mind all the things that may or may not have happened to Laenor I think Rhaenys wanted to believe it was different now and see that it wasn't just pissed her off again and in the moment she decided to kill whoever she want and I think she may of hoped through coming through the floor she may have killed the greens but seeing them alive and well, just decided to fuck with them
Rhaenys is that one badass lady that doesn't need to throw hands to frightenend the hell out of you !!! Such charisma, such poise.
She didn’t kill them because she doesn’t want to be a kin slayer. Also she loved her cousin. For all their faults those are his children and wife. It was honorable letting them live.
She did what she had to do to escape and warn her niece. Meleys was her only escape and blowing out the floor only way to get there, I think it was a fair warning of the treason they were committing and think she showed compassion and restraint to Alicent and Aegon. They locked her up and very well may have kept her prisoner if she denied The Queen's offer. I see her as a bold character who will play a big part in next episode.

"everything u feel for me….as ur queen." I can't handle that level of palpable sexual tension lol. Ironic cause in a way they are the cersei and jaime of this show lol.the last 3 mins aside,i thought this was an excellent episode. it felt like a white house political thriller with a "race against time" feel from start to finish suspense. When Otto was moving around these chess pieces, Beesbury screaming, Caswell hanging..I was on the edge of my seat. I knew how good it was when it had reactors already coping for compeuppance lol. Tom Glynn-Carney showed excellent range as Aegon. But it got overshadowed by 3 mins of a Rhaenys "happy ending" smdh lmao. This crowning ceremony was a visual historygasm, finally befitting a king in got verse. All the actors for Otto, Alicent, Aegon did a great job. And that "window in the wall of your prison" line is one of the best lines we've heard so far.
Rhaenys hasn't read Fire & Blood to know of horrors to come. So her pre-emptively nuking half her own family would've been OP. Having said that, the Rhaenys bit was to give audience a 'send home happy' moment which wasn't necessary. The coronation was fantastic in itself. But gawd forbid the ''bad guys" are on top in one episode. Those who thought lowborns of KL have any obligation to support Rhaenyra are in for big disappointments. Aegon claims his birthright from popular King Jaehaerys' Great Council ordering that the king's firstborn male son is the next king. Viserys himself won it over Rhaenys like that. Best part of this was the politics, less dragons the better. Despairing mom version of alicent does highlight her humanity more than the colder iteration of the actual green council. A well needed adjustment imo but also a continuation of her Harrenhall or knife scene mistake. They've constantly shown subtleties in her character which the audience tend to wilfully ignore since we're watching this as a team sport and we gotta cheer team lovable manipulative dad. Her being more humanized shouldn't be an issue unless one wants the show to remain grotesquely tilted towards Black (Laenor death,Rhaenyra ordering Vaemond's death, etc)

It was a badass moment. She's telling the greens to be prepared for what's coming for them, but she herself didn't kill them because kinslaying is a grievous offense, which is actually very much in line with her character, especially from what we've seen in the last episode. The writer of the episode doesn't really understand the characters she's writing, That is evident by her comments about Daemon. That being said, the actors portraying the characters clearly do have a grasp on who they are playing.
Well it's not that she's telling them what's coming, bcs at this point she was reluctant to join any faction in the war not greens not blacks, it wasn't her war to fight. She wasn't all devoted to Rhaenyra here as many ppls think, she was keeping herself and her Granddaughters out of it. So the reason why she didn't killed greens is bcs she's not a black yet. She didn't wanted to be part of this war, she only made it clear that even though she's out of the war she's a dragon too and thus must not be taken as some common lady of some common house.

I bet Daemon would have been only to happy if Rhaenys had burnt the Greens. That would have meant no more obstacles for Rhaenyra to ascend the Iron Throne with Daemon by her side.
The ending of the episode didn't make any sense, any realistic character would've incinerated the greens. "She wouldn't do that to another mother" is just a weak and stupid excuse, she wouldn't kill 1 family to prevent a war but she did kill a couple of hundred innocent people/families for no fucking reason at all, she even swiped 3 people when she flew out of the dragon pit while she could've just flown over them. I loved Aegon's corination scene until that stupid shit happened.
This never happened in the book, the writers could've just given her a cool break-out scene at a different exit and make it logical instead of stupid.
The rest of this episode was kinda boring and not logical but it's not as bad as the finale scene and has some good Aemond scenes. They should fire the writer/director that wrote the last scene or give them a smack on the cheek cuz i don't want them to ruine a show that has been almost perfect for the intire season, cuz that scene gave me some season 8 flashbacks

Rhaenys scene pissed all the book readers who are anxions to see sunfyre and dreamfyre flying from the pitt to the red keep. and since sunfyre later will only be showed injured and dreamfyre never fly in the dance...
as someone who hasnt read the books but has googled some stuff. i was really excited about rhaenys and meleys. with most of the season rhaenys was quite a side/background character which made be sad as i wanted to see a badass woman on a badass dragon. and ep9 ending was that... it showed her as a strong powerful targaryen. yes she might have killed some civilians but i think that kinda showed the targaryen madness, with them being inbred etc. she lost control because greens took what belonged to blacks. and with the people cheering not knowing the truth, she snapped and done what she did.. but at the same time she quickly pulled herself back. and calmed herself. you could see she was ready to say the word dracarys, but she stopped herself. which kinda also shows her character that shes not all that bad or insane. she had a moment of weakness she just learned the king died.. and that greens took over. but like i said she pulled it together. and showed a strong female character.
[spoiler??] i just hope to see this rhaenys for longer.. since i know what will happen. i just hope it wont be any time soon.
I couldn't believe she had the self control to NOT say Dracarys !! And your paragraphs really helped me to understand what was really going on in that scene.
But why the hell were the Guards trying to close the doors to prevent anyone else from leaving the Coronation Room ?
Not sure how this hurt her character in your eyes. If anything, this one act of defiance afyer everything she has suffered made her out to be the strongest character so far. The only other exception would be Viserys

Agree this was only done for schock value, the only silver lining I see is that she killed the civilians which may be used later as plot device
When the Shepard rises to power for the people, this will be used to justify the storming of the dragon pit later in the story. Also it's the red herring (red dragon) for the "beasts beneath the boards" blood and cheese and/or Larys Strong.
if this was GoT I feel she would have just roasted them. Why not stop a war here and now, regardless if she want to be involved or not they did imprison her after all.

They knew but the had to keep the dragons in check to protect the dragons as well as protect the realm from danger.
meleys was good, but we don't get dreamfyre and sunfyre in the other side...

Yeah the plot hole is definitely an issue. Hopefully its not an ill omen for what is to come.
Call it; "mercy," say Rhaenys didn't want to be a; "Kinslayer" lol or call her a hypocrite.
For being totally fine, it seems, with wasting dozens, (if not hundreds,) of innocent King's Landing civilians before holding back, for whatever reason refusing to torch Alicent and her family, etc. while she had the chance.
And, spin the wheel, really!
We can all choose our favorite from any number of potential options, as to why she ultimately doesn't.
But Rhaenys clearly, _obviously_
"holds back" on blasting everyone standing up there on that dais with dragon fire because there's already a second, (and most likely even a 3rd and 4th,) season slated for release!
If she had just killed them all right then and there, (like so many are whining to complaining that she didn't,) there wouldn't be any more of a worthwhile story to tell!
The show would have ended right there, or it would no longer be anything worth watching, from then on.
And it certainly have no longer been true to the; "Dance of the Dragons" source material, anyway!
(There would no longer be any reason to have a second season, let alone a 3rd or 4th or however many more.)
The story would have effectively ended right then and there, with the next episode (for all intents and purposes,) merely for showing Rhaenyra being crowned Queen of the seven kingdoms, and then the story is done!
(people should try keeping all that in mind when questioning why she didn't burn them all in that scene lol you'd think it would seem fairly obvious, but so many people are crying about it that apparently it's not, so much!)

They think everyone in game of thrones just has what it takes to burn down an entire family. If it was daemon in that position i’d get it cus its in his character that he’d do something like that, but not rhaenys. Atleast not currently.

Yeah they did a coup to change the heir from one child of viserys to his other child, i doubt rhaenys really cares about it, she just killed those civilians to get her dragon back.
The fact they killed her grandson is what pissed her off to the point of actually going to fight, but at the time of ep 9 he was still alive.
