About six thousands years ago a man & women who were blind were blessed with a son. When son grew up, the parents expressed the desire to visit all pilgrimage centres in India. The son Sarwam ( name ) went to a carpenter got made a wooden bengi ( Takri type instrument ) placed his father & mother on two pads of bengi & took his parents to all pilgrimage centres.
Sarwan traveled by foot carrying his parents. Acknowledging Sarwan's services to his parents, God blessed him. Thanks.

It is not done for the sake of any reward. It is done by devotees out of pure devotion for Lord Shiva.

In month of sawan hindus avoids consuming non veg, drinking as well as shaving and hair cutting. This is sacred month for hindus in to the devotion of Lord shiva.
These are new to even as a Hindu who belongs to South India. I am not aware of this Kaavad Yatra.
India is so diverse that even in religious practices and even being Hindu, the practices and tradition changes every 100 KM. The practices and tradition in Hinduism is different in different regions of India although all follow same religion. What a beauty!!!!
Yatra always involves hardship in waking or climbing with difficult effort before you reach your distinction to surrender to the almighty. It is a kind of Tapas ( means putting your body to extreme).
Normally Kabadi Yatra involves carrying the holy water in a kavadi which is kept on your shoulder and go by walking mostly barefoot. ( But this cycling is a modern renovation- I don’t know if it has God’s approval. However anything you do with devotion will be blessed. )
Sawan Month is very Holy Month In Hinduism And Kawar Yatra is considered very auspicious and a way to salvation during Sawan Month
India is a country of farmers and Farmers usually have no time for devotion but during savan month it's rainy season after showing kharif crop they are free for atleast a month and hence they have time

Although many other religious reasons like in bhakti path one way to please the lord is to push our limit and tell lord that have come with great strides to see you.. worship you... In today's time, Kanwar Yatra is being done in many ways, but in reality, Kanwar Yatra is done on foot.Kanwar is not kept on the ground anywhere on the way. Even during rest, the kanwar has to be hung on a tree. If the kanwar is kept down, then its purpose will not be successful. In such a situation, start the journey by filling Gangajal again.

The basis is love and faith.. When a person leaves his comfort and tries some physical tapasya it makes him pure and selfless. It will reflect in mindset and built the will power of the person too. And trust me God's grace is bestowed after any kind of physical or mental tapas.
Regarding water, it's Ganga river which flows from the Himalayas that's why it is mostly cold all round the year atleast till Haridwar as far as I know.
Devanagari: कांवड़ यात्रा) is an annual pilgrimage of devotees of Shiva, known as Kānvarias(कावड़िया) or "Bhole" (भोले), to Hindu pilgrimage places of Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri in Uttarakhand and Sultanganj in Bihar to fetch holy waters of Ganges River. Millions of participants gather sacred water from the Ganga and carry it across hundreds of miles to dispense as offerings in their local Śiva shrines, or specific temples such as Pura Mahadeva and Augharnath temple in Meerut, and Kashi Vishwanath, Baidyanath, and Deoghar in Jharkhand.

At its base, Kanwar refers to a genre of religious performances where participants ritually carry water from a holy source in containers suspended on either side of a pole. The pilgrimage derives its name from the contraption, called kanwar, and while the source of the water is often the Ganga, it can also be its local equivalents. The offering is dedicated to Shiva, often addressed as Bhola (innocent) or Bhole Baba (innocent guardian/god). The pilgrim, accordingly, is a bhola, and in the vocative, bhole! Although there is little mention of the Kanwar as an organized festival in canonical texts, the phenomenon surely existed in the early nineteenth century when English travelers report seeing Kanwar pilgrims at many points during their journeys in the north Indian plains.
The Yatra used to be a small affair undertaken by a few saints and older devotees until the late 1980s, when it started gaining popularity.
Today, the Kanwar pilgrimage to Haridwar in particular has grown to be India's largest annual religious gathering, with an estimated 12 million participants in the 2010 and 2011 events. The devotees come from the surrounding states of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Bihar and some from Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. Heavy security measures are undertaken by the government and the traffic on Delhi-Haridwar national highway National Highway 58 is diverted for the period.
Outside of India, the tradition has led to the annual Maha Shivaratri pilgrimage where around half a million Hindus in Mauritius go on a pilgrimage to Ganga Talao, many walking bare feet from their homes carrying Kanvars
Kanwar Yatra is observed in the month of Sawan by the devotees of Lord Shiva. The followers who take part in this yatra are known as Kanwariyas. They fetch Ganga water from different regions and get back to their hometown and offer it to the Shivalingam

Odisha mein toh aap sirf barefoot chalke hi yatra kar sakte ho . Sadke bhi rush rehta hai . Logo ki halat kharap ho jati hai barish mein din raat chal chalke . Mujhe yeh wala toh itna difficult nehi laga. Uss Doran upbas bhi rakhte hai. Logo ko sadak par nhi raat gujarni hoti hai aur din raat kandhe mein paani bhi uthaye rakhni padta hai.

Aapko pata hai..mujhe swimming bilkul nahi aati but still maine Andamans me Havelock Island me ja kar Sea-walk ki thi..isme 40 ft inside sea jate hain and it's so beautiful serene and calm inside...Bas himmat kar li ki mujhe karna hai...Dar ke aage jeet hai.

When samudra manthan happened after some time in samudra manthan poison came called halahal lord Shiva take that poison in his neck and he called nilkanth.
Soo after he takes the poison he suffers pain in his body so that time all Devas poured gangajal on lord Shiva so his pain got down.for that reason every sanatani who keeps faith on lord Shiva they doo kavad Yatra.
Not only by cycling but also devotees cover distance barefoot.

All the Yathras r for self Realisation, tradition and certain reason revelant to that region. In South we do Kavadis mostly for Karthikeya Swami. Aasthiks don't ride vehicle,but walk barefoot with 2 containers of water, milk, flower or any other specific item spl to that temple.
Water is very cold during summer because the source of this water is glacier in gangotri..

And when this kawar yatra people were going from Muslim area they stopped their way and when kawars beat Muslims who tried tstop them women stated throwing stones from houses and than some one throwed a piece of meat on them and thats the moment in which their whole hard work went in vein and now they have to go back to hardwar and start their yatra gain o god please through some light of knowledge and non violence on Muslims
